Easter Banner --- Symbols (meaning and mystery) ‌ inspiring us to seek, teaching us to believe Circle The circle, because it has no beginning or end, is symbolic of eternity. It is used most often as a reference to God.

Circles (Entwined) This figure, formed of three interwoven circles, is a symbol for the Trinity. The circles represent the eternal nature of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Entwined, they remind us that God is one, even though he reveals himself in three Persons. Alpha & Omega Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and thus refer to the eternal nature of Christ. Rev. 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Trefoil The trefoil is a stylized shamrock, which St. Patrick used to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. It is a single design composed of three joined circles, which represent eternity, signifying one God in three Persons. Triangle Early symbolic representations of the Trinity are rare, but the triangle is probably the first. Like other trinitarian symbols, it represents one God in three Persons. Matt. 28:18-20 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in(n) the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Triquetra The Triquetra is an early Trinitarian design found especially in the British Isles. Its three equal arcs represent equality, its continuous line expresses eternity, and the interweaving represents indivisibility. Fleur-de-lis The fleur-de-lis is a stylized representation of the lily, a symbol of purity, and so is a common reference to the Virgin Mary. The fleur-de-lis is also a symbol of royalty, made so by its adoption by kings of France. The triune representation of the fleur-delis has also led to its adoption as a symbol of the Trinity. Star (6-Pointed) The six-pointed star is the Creator's star. Its six points stand for the six days of creation. The points are also said to represent the six attributes of God - power, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice. This star is also known today as the Star of David. The six-pointed star is of ancient origin and is used in many religions with a variety of meanings.

From the Parish Council – Love God, Serve Others, Bear Fruit St. Therese 2019 Parish Survey Summary

During the three-week period beginning March 16, 2019, the Pastoral Council conducted a survey to help inform how St. Therese may become a more vibrant community, be inspired to live the Gospel message more fully, enhance our worship experience, and continue to grow in faith. The next few pages contain the detailed results and below are general observations that emerged from the responses to the questions as well as recurring comments provided through the responses: • •

Almost 1,400 responses received in three-week survey – excellent participation! Parishioners are very willing to welcome newcomers. ο Yet comments reflect that we could do more to be welcoming ▪ Sitting at the ends of the pews, unwilling to move to the center ▪ Need to more actively engage people sitting around you, be a friend ▪ Help bring others with you to worship

Many seek a stronger sense of community. ο Pursue additional socialization opportunities, such as after Mass activities, parish events (picnics, parties), more groups (Young Adults, “ministries to bring me, my husband and children closer”) ο Willingness to support community activities through: ▪ Efforts to improve life for others, such as collecting food and other items for the poor and

visiting the sick or homebound ▪ Engage in meeting human needs outside of parish – Homeless outreach “Help start a PB&J

sandwich making day for the homeless” Many identified a need to enhance our experience at Mass. ο There is a strong desire for a Mass that explains various parts and movements ο Engagement during Mass can improve ▪ Respondents indicated that people should be encouraged to sing ▪ More emphatic Mass responses are needed (AMEN!)

Respondents indicated that they wish to share their faith with others. ο Willingness to help children/adults to learn the faith ο Share with others where you worship and invite them ο Bible study opportunities need to be encouraged People wish to be more involved in the parish than they currently are ο More respondents indicated that they were called to serve in parish ministries; ο Participation is needed from more (all) parishioners

The Parish Council would like to thank you all for participating in this survey! We will continue to analyze the data to find opportunities to enhance our worship and become a more vibrant community. In the meantime, we would like to invite you to personally reflect on this information, especially as we enter the Easter season, to find how you may: • • • •

Be more welcoming to visitors Participate fully at Mass by singing and giving heartfelt responses Become more involved within the community by joining a group and making new friends Serve in our parish community and beyond to more fully live the Gospel message ...continued on the next page

HOLY CROSS REPRESENTATIVES AT MASS ON April 27-28! “Just as we celebrate the sacrament of Baptism in a Church when we enter parish life, the burial rite celebrated in a Catholic cemetery completes that Tradition. Holy Cross is the only cemetery in San Diego that offers weekly prayer for your eternal life -- the final step in Catholic Funeral Rites and Tradition. As Catholics, we believe in the dignity of each person, the importance of Baptism, the reality of the Resurrection of Jesus, the promise of Eternal Life, and the celebration of the Eucharist as the Great Act of Thanksgiving for Redemption. Located on consecrated land, Holy Cross offers a place for quiet reflection, devotion, meditation and prayer as well as the frequent sacramental celebration of the Eucharist; celebrated every Friday in the beautiful Mausoleum Chapel for every Holy Cross family member. As a Church, we believe in the Communion of Saints, and call on the prayers of the faithful to help us in our journey to Heaven. Holy Cross provides the longevity that is expected to endure long after private or commercially-run cemeteries. When you choose a Catholic Cemetery, you are laid to rest with people who share the same faith, traditions and heritage. Giving your loved one a proper burial is a Corporal Work of Mercy and act of love. Representatives from our Diocesan cemetery will be here outside of Masses on April 27 and April 28, 2019.
