I recently discovered the work of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864 – 1916) and was struck by the quality of light he captured in his landscapes and figurative work. Many of the images used a limited palette of muted tones and refrain from using bright colours. There was something about the combination of colour, composition and stark subject matter that seemed familiar to me.
As a regular visitor to Bute, I wanted to capture some of my observations as a collection of images. The island’s geography allows you to observe the horizon from many different locations. One delineated element often punctuates an understated scene. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of locations devoid of people and illustrate a balance between the sea, the land and the sky.
