Miami Beach Dance Academy Undergraduate Studio 2009
The Miami Beach Dance Academy is a multi-purpose building that facilitates dance performances, dance instruction and administration space. The program is divided into two halves connected by a long dramatic staircase that services the entire building. The smaller half contains the administration space while the larger half has the performance hall and practice spaces above it. The building is integrated seamlessly into the Miami Beach urban fabric. The two halves of the building are articulated separately to accomplish this. The administration half reacts to the hotel across the street by keeping the same setbacks and height, ensuring the street experience is intact. The performance half converses with the Wolfsonian Museum across the avenue by matching its heavy square massing.

Classical Elementary School Undergraduate Studio 2011
This design project was a proposal for an elementary school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It is a study of both classical and vernacular architecture found in the region, perfectly exemplifying the town’s urban and rural identity. The focal point of the building is the library, which would be used by the surrounding community during non-school hours. An encircling second level catwalk maximized book shelf space. The semi-enclosed central courtyard creates a protected play space for children while allowing pensive views to the rolling hills of the adjacent countryside.

St. Lucia Sustainable Hospital Undergraduate Studio 2010
This hospital was designed for the tropical island nation of St. Lucia in the Caribbean. It achieves a natural sustainability through the use of local materials for construction and natural ventilation in most rooms. Timber is used exclusively for the hospitals roofs and stabilized concrete blocks make use of local soil to cut down on concrete emissions. A single loaded hospital room system was employed to maximize airflow and patient comfort in hospital rooms that do not make use of air conditioning.

After Burnham; Chicago in 2109 Graduate Studio 2012
In this studio, the Burnham Plan of 1909 was reimagined to adapt to the current and projected formal, social and sustainability issues of Chicago. A regional and city plan for Chicago in 100 years was designed as a group and each student simultaneously designed a unique site within the region. The neighborhood of Pilsen surrounding the “Bubbly Creek” branch of the Chicago River was the focus of this project. In this scheme, the highway was brought to grade, surrounding neighborhoods were patched together to bolster light and medium industrial areas, and a formal water court with echoes of the Colombian Exposition was designed.

European Citta Ideale Graduate Studio Spring 2012
The Citta Ideale was a project that allowed total freedom of design in terms of the city’s location, geography and topography. This city was “found” in the low country of Belgium and was similar in culture and features to Bruges, Belgium. Encircled by a canal system that also wove through the city’s fabric, this city’s identity was based heavily in trade and commerce as evidenced by its multiple market squares and “work” neighborhood utilizing hydro power. An intricate network of intra-block spaces provides local citizens with a multitude of walking routes while suggesting to outsiders that they shouldn’t intrude here.

Civic Core of Vincennes, IN Graduate Studio 2011
An entire semester was devoted to giving the historic center of Vincennes, Indiana a fresh identity through a new civic core. A small master plan was produced in conjunction with three design projects: a theater, city hall and new facade for the existing basilica. Each project was a study in one of the three main classical orders: the Doric (Basilica Facade), the Ionic (City Hall), and the Corinthian (Theater).

De Stijl Desk - This desk was conceived as a personal project to study the process of wood construction as well as the Dutch Modernist art style “De Stijl”. Following in the footsteps of furniture maker and De Stijl practitioner Gerrit Rietveld, this desk embodies the tenets of De Stijl by creating visual compositions of planar elements. In this case, Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway Boogie Woogie” and “Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow” exerted considerable influence. The materials used for the desk were a subtle cherry wood and a high quality birch plywood with a veneer. Only 13 removable screws were used for construction with the majority of connections consisting only of corresponding cuts in the wood pieces.
