FLINT WATER CRISIS

THE MISTAKES MADE THE LIVES AFFECTED

I

n a state surrounded by the world’s largest source of fresh water, the people of a major city were poisoned by their drinking supply. Today, the residents of Flint are scared. They’re angry. They’ve lost faith in their government, and they feel abandoned. Their faces tell it all. The frustration. The pain. The vulnerability. Flint Journal photojournalist Jake May set out to chronicle these emotions over a span of several weeks, taking portraits of 100 citizens of Flint. One hundred faces. One hundred stories of heartbreak. A 20-page special section in today’s newspaper explores in-depth what went wrong in Flint.

So much has already been written. But many still wonder: How could such a catastrophe occur in an American city in the 21st century? Our report looks at what Gov. Rick Snyder knew and when he knew it, as well as the culpability of his administration in one of the most troubling chapters in Michigan history. We look at the roles played by the key state agencies, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. We also feature stories of people directly affected. “It’s changed my whole life,” said Flint resident Yolanda Figueroa, 60. “You have to live in it to actually know.”
