Jim Harger jharger@mlive.com G R A N D R A P I D S — Mister Car Wash has expanded into Michigan by acquiring Southland Auto Wash’s six locations in West Michigan, the company announced Thursday. “When it comes to best in class in the car wash industry, the Ellis family and Southland team comes to mind,” said Casey Lindsay, director of acquisitions for the Tuscon, Arizona-based company. “We are honored they would entrust us with their business, and we’re proud to add these stores to the Mister family,” Lindsey said. Mister Car Wash operates 212 car washes and 34 express lubes in 20 states. “Our family has been washing cars in the Grand Rapids community since 1950, and we’re grateful for the support and success we’ve had here,” said Mark Ellis, president of Southland Auto Wash. “As we looked to the future of not only

our business but our people, we knew that Mister Car Wash would be respectful of our legacy and community.” Acquiring Southland gives Mister Car Wash their first entry into the Michigan market. “It’s special to be in a position to expand into Michigan with Southland’s iconic brand,” John Lai, CEO of Mister Car Wash, said in a press release. “We found a strong alignment of core values with the Southland team and have been inspired by their commitment to the community and their people,” Lai said.

ford Construction has nearly all of the approvals it needs to move forward with construction of a “super block” project with a Meijer grocery on Grand Rapids’ West Side at Bridge Street and Stocking Avenue. The goal is to start demolition of the seven buildings on the site this spring, said Jim Reminga, senior vice president of land and master planning. The BP Gas Station at Stocking and First will remain. “With New Holland at one end and the grocery store at the other end, I think these blocks will turn into something new and different,” Reminga said. The city’s planning commission gave its approval to the last portion of the site plan Thursday for the three-building complex surrounding a parking deck that will nearly fill the block between Bridge, Stocking, First and Seward. The project still needs a land use permit from the city, Reminga said. More detailed timeline information for the project was not yet available. “To have an opportunity to design three distinctly different city buildings on a city block and have them interrelate as well as they do ... there’s a detailed side to this plan,” Reminga said. “We’re really excited about the way it turned out.” W here a row of mismatched, empty storefronts now sits on the north side of Bridge will be transformed into a downtown Meijer grocery, with a main entrance at the corner of Bridge

and Seward. The Meijer store will have an “old school neighborhood grocery with a produce-onthe-sidewalk” feel, Reminga said. The grocer y also will have a door into the parking garage. Above the Meijer will be four stories of residential and office space. The former Miller Products building, 614 First St. N W, emblazoned with a large mural, will be replaced by a larger three-story office building with a facade on Seward and a facade down First facing the Rockford Construction offices. Since t he concept ua l plans were released in summer 2016, developers have reduced the number of stories in the First Street office building from four to three. “The reduction in the office building is a reaction to market dynamics,” Reminga said. On the west side of the site along Stocking, a fourstory residential building is planned with 64 affordable units. State Low Income Housing Tax Credits were approved this January. Both the grocer y and office buildings — as well as the Stocking Avenue affordable housing — will

surround a parking deck. The reduction in floors of office space in the First Street building also shrunk parking spaces from 308 to 277. The lower number still meets the city’s requirements. The lane configuration on Bridge Street from Stocking to Seward will change as a result of required traffic studies and design team meetings. As it exists now, there are bike lanes on the north and south sides, and on-street parking on the south side. There’s one right turn lane on westbound Bridge for traffic going north on Stocking. That will change: on-street parking on the south side of the street will be eliminated to make room for a center left-turn lane for eastbound traffic to turn left onto Seward. The eastbound bike lane on the south side will be pushed alongside the sidewalk. Five on-street spaces on westbound Bridge will line the sidewalk closest to the front door of the grocery store. The right turn lane on westbound Bridge at Stocking will remain.
