Making more noise about fireworks

Although Michigan has fewer young drivers on the road than at the start of this decade, they are the most likely to be involved in serious traffic crashes. They represent 6.6 percent of licensed drivers statewide yet are involved in 21 percent of crashes where at least one person was killed or had an incapacitating injury. Here for selected counties are the percentage of serious accidents involving drivers ages 16-20 in 2015, with the number of crashes. More in Perspective.

A bill introduced last week by Reps. John Chirkun, D-Roseville, and Patrick Green, D-Warren, would allow local officials to limit fireworks to the day before, the day of, or the day after New Year’s Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day. Now, fireworks can be fired on or surrounding any national holiday. The lawmakers say it’s a response to residents’ complaints about noise. Is this common sense? Over-regulation? Here are some opinions from MLive.com commenters.

Make all the laws you want. Give the local authorities as much as you want. The real problem is that the current laws are not enforced. ... The real problem is the lack of respect people have for each other anymore. JS G That would set a dangerous precedent by allowing local authorities to supersede state laws. If they can do it for fireworks, they can get away with doing it for everything. Analyze This One I do not mind fireworks when they are used during pertinent holidays. But ever since they passed this law, my neighbors start shooting them every weekend from the 2nd week in June all the way into Sept Ifish4fun We don’t need any more stupid rules and regulations! Tell them legislators to knock it off ! zackwest If people stuck to the day before and the day after, there’d be little issue. Unfortunately, the day the pop-up stands go up, we’ve got nonstop fireworks til a week or two after the Fourth. jefnvk
