ANATOMY/IDENTITY Volume 1: NOSE

IDENTITY: NOSE We can all agree that the eyes are an essential part of a person’s identity. In fact, you can’t even speak the word identity without uttering “eye.” But this begs the question: What role do other parts of the anatomy play in the grand collage that is an individual’s identity? In this edition, we will focus on the nose’s role in an individual’s identity. True, nose and identity share no phonemes; but I will prove to you that a nose, or lack thereof, is a critical part of what makes you, you.

The old saying goes: “ you can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friends nose” This quote is evidence of the personal nature of the nose. Despite it’s prominent station on the face, it is still a private part. “The nose knows”

A prominent nose connotes power. When we are born, our nose is but a button. As we step into maturity, our nose grows appropriately, reflecting what we’ve learned in our adolescence. To remove one’s nose is to veritably neuter them. To return them to the impotent state of a prepubescent child. To deny them the knowledge they have accrued in their lives. This is in stark contrast to the eyes. The removal of the eyes imparts wisdom on the individual. Consider Odin, the all seeing father of the Norse pantheon, who became all the wiser after losing his eye. Another fine example, Odysseus, who could only see the truth after becoming blind. It appears eyes do not impart wisdom upon one’s identity. Not like the nose, the ever present symbol of age, wisom, and power. “Stephen Jay Gould has noted that larger noses are less neotenous, especially the large “Grecian” nose.”

A long nose connotes corruption As we age, and our nose grows, we gain wisdom and power, true. But with that gain comes a recipricol loss. The loss of innocence. Pinnochio’s nose grows when he tells a lie. To lie is to use power and force of will to alter the truth. This growth symbolizes corruption. Remember this: wise wizards have large noses, but so too do wicked witches.
