Kokomo Chamber of Commerce, welcomed visitors who came to hear their state-elected officials speak on a variety of legislative topics. Representative Heath VanNatter, Representative Mike Karickhoff and Senator Jim Buck each answered questions from Kirk Daniels of the Kokomo Chamber of Commerce and also from individuals in the audience. Among Buck’s opening comments were references to the recently passed Right to Work legislation. Buck said that even though a lot of controversy surrounded this bill, it will benefit Kokomo and Indiana. Buck stated that plans are in place to track how many union members will stop paying their dues, how many unions will truly cave in and how many new employers will come to Indiana as a result of the passage of this legislation. Randy McKay, Assistant Director of Human Resources for Kokomo and an opponent of the Right to Work legislation, challenged Buck that the passage of the bill will become a problem for people who are unjustly terminated. Buck disagreed, citing that in spite of unions the EEOC (Equal Employment

Mike Karickhoff emphasized in his opening comments that every bill he introduced this session was constituent-driven. Karickhoff said it is not uncommon to receive 100 personal emails per day, and he says he reads them all. He also said that he regularly corresponds with 4-6 constituents who are interested in their state government. In answer to a constituent’s question, all three elected officials agreed that they enjoy these forums and also interacting with their districts. Buck said he has had invitations to breakfast, lunch, dinner, teas, and he said, “If you are willing to have us, we are willing to come talk the issues.” Martha Lake, Howard County Treasurer, asked a question about HB 1090 (which was passed in the Senate the week after Third House), which is legislation about tax sales and amnesty for tax sales. Lake said she was not sure it was fair legislation to the taxpayers who pay on time. None of the three elected

officials who were present were very familiar with the legislation, although VanNatter quickly accessed information about it on his laptop. Some discussion ensued. Mayor Greg Goodnight was in attendance as well as about 25 members of the community, including Clee Oliver, At Large Candidate for Howard County Council and Brad Bagwell, Candidate for Howard County Commissioner. Oliver asked a question about a new specialty Indiana license plate that financially benefits a controversial organization called the Indiana Youth Group and whose website had events scheduled such as “Girls Who Like Girls” as well as discussion groups that talked candidly about sexual encounters for LGBT youth. VanNatter said that legislation was being discussed that would pull many of the specialty plates. Karickhoff said that the police don’t like that there are so many different plates, which makes identifying

This may change back, Buck said, since the BMV can be challenged in court– whereas if plates are voted on in the legislature then that is not seen as ‘discriminatory’.
