Aug. 29, 2012 Fall enrollment at IU Kokomo peaked at an unprecedented 3,719, up 12.1 percent from last year (3,318) with record-breaking numbers across the board. More academic programs, increases in financial aid, state-of-the-art facilities, innovative advising structure, a growing campus life and affordable tuition all contribute to students choosing IU Kokomo, said Chancellor Michael Harris. “IU Kokomo is marking another defining moment in our history,” Harris said. “This record enrollment is a result of a very strategic and intentional plan, and implementation. It is an outcome of the hard work of our faculty and staff, as well as community support. The IU Kokomo student body is composed of almost entirely Indiana residents -- 99 percent -- and 80 percent remain in the north central Indiana region after graduation.

IU Kokomo's fall enrollment is up 12.1 percent.

“Our student success and north central Indiana prosperity is our mission. We will continue to be forward looking,” Harris said. Among the categories of growth at IU Kokomo: Credit Hours, +8.3 percent Full-time students, +6.4 percent (70.2 percent) Academic Honors students, +15.4 percent Minorities, +9.4 percent Freshmen, +10.4 percent Sophomores, +3.9 percent Juniors, +2.4 percent Seniors, +5.8 percent Males, +16.5 percent Females, +9.7 percent Incoming freshmen have an SAT composite of 1120 or higher, a 12.9 percent increase over last year. These accomplishments build upon and continue a two-year momentum that includes summer enrollment, Harris said. IU Kokomo's enrollment growth in the past two years is particularly significant in light of data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, showing that the total population of the city of Kokomo and that of Howard County today are similar

population numbers from 1970. The Division of Allied Health Sciences showed the highest increase for major-specific programs on campus, with registration up 30.9 percent. The newly added health sciences degree accounts for 23 percent of that enrollment. The Master of Business Administration degree rose 40 percent, while 24 students are enrolled in the new Master of Science in Nursing. The IU Kokomo campus now offers 15 new degree programs, more online and Friday courses, and additional funding for scholarships and financial aid. IU Bloomington A record 7,600 first-year students enrolled for the fall semester at IU Bloomington also are making their mark for academic excellence and diversity. The new students' average score on the SAT critical reading and mathematics exams is 1202, up slightly from last year and just a point shy of the campus record. Their median high school gradepoint average is 3.69 on a scale of 4.0. (The average SAT score includes results from students who took the ACT exam, converting the ACT score to an SAT equivalent and using students' highest subtest scores). IU student Amala Afoaku, left, talks with IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU Provost Lauren Robel during Welcome Week last week. Sixty-two percent of first-year students are from Indiana, while 38 percent are nonresidents. International first-year students represent a record number of nations, a fitting development at a time when the university prepares to open a new School of Global and International Studies. The campus also made modest gains in the number of freshmen from under-represented groups. "The record size of this year's freshman class demonstrates that an Indiana University education continues to be a great investment," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "They are also an extraordinarily accomplished group, as reflected by their near-record SAT scores and high school grades. It's a true vote of confidence that IU Bloomington is the destination of choice for so many top students from Indiana, across the U.S. and indeed from around the world."
