Academic Achievements 2010-2011 New Degrees

Masters of Nursing (MSN) – this degree will prepare registered nurses with advanced practice nursing knowledge in the areas of nursing education and administration. Nurses with this advanced knowledge will enhance health care for the community, and beneficially impact the health care delivery system in the state. Bachelors of Science in Chemical Biology – this degree will interface chemistry and biology in developing highly skilled graduates in both areas. Graduates will be chemists who work on biologically-related molecules. These graduates can work in areas such as pharmaceutical research, or environmental consulting firms, or other such fields. All of these types of jobs are ones that the State of Indiana is emphasizing as part of their development plans. Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry – this degree studies chemical processes in living systems (e.g., metabolic reactions in cells). Graduates will be well prepared for careers in medicine or other health related fields, again emphasizing areas that the state believes are important to our economic future. Bachelors of Science in Health Science – this degree will enable students to obtain a broad understanding of the science of human health and its application to their chosen career. It also serves as a pathway for students who do not gain entry into our very competitive Nursing and Radiography programs but still desire to work in a health related field. As the population continues to age and demand more medical services, this degree will prepare students for this burgeoning job market. Bachelor of Fine Arts – this degree will give students skills in the fine arts and new media. The unique focus of this program is found in the interdisciplinary nature of the degree, thus allowing the students to create a broad variety of

cutting-edge works. This degree will serve the state by graduating highly qualified, creative individuals who can work in multiple creative and media related industries. Special Education Degrees Data from the Indiana Department of Education show the need for special education teachers (as shown by the number of emergency permits issued - The emergency permits are issued to those who are not licensed or who are underlicensed for the specific teaching position and emergency licenses are temporary). Within the counties served by IU Kokomo, over the past two years more than 100 emergency permits have been issued to schools. These emergency licenses point to a clear need for these licensure programs in the region as well as statewide. Bachelor of Science in Education, Special Education Licensure, and Elementary Education level – These degrees will be an initial licensure program with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. Graduates will be eligible to teach students within the general education classroom as well as students in classrooms for exceptional learners. Bachelor of Science in Education, Special Education Licensure, and Secondary Education level - This degree allows the candidates to obtain a degree in secondary education in special education for initial licensure and to meet requirements to be highly qualified in Science, Mathematics, Fine Arts, English, and/or Social Studies. This program will fulfill the license requirements for Exceptional Needs (Mild Intervention) for the content area within the Secondary Education licensure requirements. Adding Bachelor of Sciences to existing Bachelor of Arts degrees Compared to other campuses, IU Kokomo had few BS degrees. BS degrees typically have more coursework in the major (and less general education) than do BA degrees. Five of these new BS degrees are in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) areas as this is an area that the state has indicated the need for additional degrees. Bachelor of Science Degrees in STEM fields Bachelors of Science in Biological and Physical Sciences – this degree provides a broad-based science program for students planning on further graduate studies in science. This program allows students to tailor her/his studies to

specific interest in the sciences. Bachelor of Sciences in Chemistry – this degree provides a broad theoretical and practical set of skills and experiences in chemistry and will prepare a student well for either graduate school or entry-level laboratory positions. Bachelor of Science in Biology – this degree provides a broad theoretical and practical set of skills and experiences in biology and will prepare a student well for either graduate school or entry-level laboratory positions. Bachelor of Science in Psychology – this degrees focuses on the physical science aspects of psychology, giving students the skills in scientific inquiry and interpretation. There are two tracks: Natural Sciences and Psychological Sciences, both of which will prepare students who are interested in graduate studies in Psychology. Bachelor of Science in Mathematics – this degree will provide students with knowledge and skills in applied mathematics for careers, for example, in actuarial science or biostatistics. It will also prepare students for graduate studies in mathematics or related fields. Bachelor of Science degrees in non-STEM fields Bachelor of Science in Sociology (Applied Sociology/Human Services) – this degree prepares students for the social science profession. It was developed in response to a specific need of Ivy Tech graduates with an Associate of Science degree in Human Services for additional baccalaureate level work. Students can focus on different areas, such as children, families, crime and society, etc. Bachelor of Science in New Media - This degree will give students added depth and technical skills in new media including web design, graphic design or video game design. New Media is one of the fastest growth areas in the state and the additional technical focus of this degree will serve the students (and the state) well in the growing job market for these skills. Bachelor of Science in Communication – This degree will give students extensive practical and research experiences in one of three tracks: Journalism, Public Communications, and Public Relations. This degree is appropriate for students seeking graduate level admissions. A communications degree prepares a student well for the many communication related jobs such as media relations

and business communications. Online Educational Changes Online Courses – we are committed to developing and expanding our online course offerings. As a result, the campus has put additional emphasis and resources into developing these offerings (see below for our certification for online course development). In spring 2011, IU Kokomo offered six of our own online courses (any previous offerings were online courses from other campuses). In fall 2011, there will be eleven courses offered with an additional fifteen under development for spring 2012 and beyond. Online Course Development Certification Program – IU Kokomo has developed a state-of-the-art faculty development program for online course development. This certificate program includes two online courses about online course development and universal course design/best practices, a set of faculty meetings with CTLA staff on online issues, a technology training series, a peer review of their developed online course, and training for these initial faculty members to serve as mentors for the next set of trainees. Bachelor of General Studies – online program in cooperation with IU East – this consortium degree will allow students to complete the complete bachelor of general studies online. IU East and IU Kokomo will develop compatible course offerings so that students can complete their degrees in a timely manner. This will address the needs of the local population, many of whom cannot travel to complete their programs. Renaming and Reconfiguring an Existing Program The Masters of Liberal Studies (MLS) was renamed the Masters of Liberal Studies (MALS). This was done in response to a local need – the Ivy Tech programs in our region had contacted IU Kokomo for training of their faculty. This degree was reconfigured to incorporate a teaching track – this allows Ivy Tech faculty to earn their Master’s degree in several content areas while simultaneously receiving skills and best practices for teaching. This change also better prepares students who are interested in further graduate studies. New Certificate Programs Graduate Certificate in Health Management – this certificate will fill a local need.

Local hospitals, such as St. Joseph and Howard Regional, face a shortage of qualified health administrators. It has become more and more difficult to attract qualified health administrators from major centers such as Indianapolis. This certificate program would alleviate this problem by training workers locally, thus increasing the likelihood that they would remain in Kokomo and its surrounding area. Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Informatics – this certificate serves a local need. Graduates of degrees from some time ago are often not prepared for the pervasiveness of technology in society today. This certificate program addresses this problem by helping existing college graduates develop and document their computer skills, skills that are needed in today’s marketplace. New Minors A number of new minors have been developed to allow students to better tailor their undergraduate degree to fit their personal and professional needs. These new minors include a Leadership and Environmental Science. Additional minors are under consideration as we continually evaluate our offerings to meet the local needs. Community Partnerships Center for Educational Partnership (CEP) – This is a consortium of 18 school corporations in the IU Kokomo service area. The CEP, under the sponsorship of IU Kokomo and the School of Education, is tasked with identifying P-12 related issues and concerns and working together to provide professional resources and expertise. It will work on assessing the needs of area superintendents, school systems and teachers in the areas of professional development; designing and facilitating professional development opportunities for area teachers to meet the pre-determined needs; facilitating partnerships between IU Kokomo faculty research areas and the needs the area schools; and assisting faculty in developing partnership projects including outside funding. The following five areas were identified as having greatest currency across all 18 school corporations: 1. Review achievement data – Identify correlational trends. Which tests are the most predictive? 2. Identify webcasts/podcasts and faculty expertise to assist teachers, principals, superintendents (separate groups) to use data effectively.

3. Literacy – (PL109) Elementary Reading Plan. Workshops and professional development opportunities to assist teachers as they plan for scientifically-based reading instruction in the K-6 program. 4. Equitably assessment of teachers – especially in light of the imperative that teacher effectiveness (student achievement) must be a factor in merit-based pay increases. 5. Curriculum development for 5-12 teachers – the curriculum – pedagogy/instruction – assessment loop. Accreditation School of Business – underwent a successful re-accreditation from AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and was given five years (the maximum allowed). International Experiences In an effort to continue to internationalize the campus, IU Kokomo has worked on a number of international initiatives. These have included: Students from Korea (Jesus University and ShunShin University) attending classes and activities on campus for a month. While students from Jesus University have been visiting on campus for 10 plus years, this year the program was expanded to include ShunShin University, extended from the usual 2 weeks to 4, and included daily English as a Second Language courses. Travel trips. While IU Kokomo has had a long history of sending student on international study courses, this year we had the greatest number of trips and students traveling ever. This included trips to Guatemala, South Korea, France, and England. We expect to have even more trips and more student travel next year. Faculty Development Activities. For the first time this year we offered two faculty members, from Education and Nursing, the opportunity to travel to South Korea for curriculum development activities. As part of this program, the faculty members involved pledged to present to their unit and the campus as a whole on their curriculum development efforts. Dr. Michael Tulley, Education, was a Scholar in Residence at ShunShin University http://www.indiana.edu/~kowcms/academic_affairs/resources/Academic%20Achievements%202010-2011.php[2/3/2015 7:31:25 AM]

during the spring 2011 semester. As part of his sabbatical there, he worked to develop and deepen the ties between IU Kokomo and ShunShin. Intellectual Property There are currently two faculty members working with the Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation to patent and commercialize their inventions. High Tech Classroom – KO 177 Indiana University Kokomo Information Technology Services partnered with the Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment to provide a “next generation classroom technology” pilot experience for faculty and support staff. Main Building 177 (KO 177) was originally designed as a traditional classroom with moveable furniture for use as a small classroom or seminar room. The campus released this classroom for redesign as an experimental classroom during the spring 2011 semester. This project is associated with the Indiana University Information Technology Strategic Plan, Empowering People, Action 64, which calls for “experimentation with and implementation of a range of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, including state-of-the-art instructional technology in conventional classrooms.” At the university level, IU Kokomo is partnering with IU Northwest and University Information Technology Services to obtain feedback from faculty and students who utilize this experimental classroom. The goal is to advance classroom technology and classroom design in general purpose classrooms university-wide. To that end, the room design is based on the LearnLab concept created by Steelcase and tested in 2006. The design immerses students in a technology-rich collaborative learning environment proven to stimulate engagement. In addition to the standard AV package currently in all general purpose classrooms (ceiling mount projector, document camera, computer, VCR/DVD, sound reinforcement, internet connection, and Extron control system), the experimental classroom contains moveable chairs, tables, and large screen displays for flexible room layout and collaborative activities, CopyCam digital camera for capturing and digitizing white board content for post class online access and for printing, SynchronEyes for sharing projected images on all displays in the room including images projected by the ceiling mount projector, and Echo 360 for capturing audio lectures and content projected by the instructor during class for post class access and online review by students. Lastly, small white

boards, often referred to as huddle boards which can be passed around and then mounted on a rollable easel, will be available for students to collaborate and share thoughts and ideas. The flexible furniture design with well integrated technology will be tested by faculty who will be fully supported. The intent is to engage faculty and students in evaluating the flexible room design and integrated technology, and evaluate how well the facility encourages and enhances teacher-student and student-student interaction.
