Community Action Agency announces awards Sunday, April 17, 2005, 12:00 am
Mid Michigan Community Action Agency hosted its 39th annual Awards Celebration, celebrating "Partnerships and Collaborations" with local organizations in its six-county service area. Nearly 200 guests, representing businesses, churches, service agencies, legislative leaders and staff recognized volunteer and family achievers for fiscal year 2004. The agency also acknowledged that it received 103,069 hours of volunteer time from dedicated parents, food pantry and commodity food workers, and many others that volunteered their time to the agency. Legislative leaders, Congressman Dave Camp (4th Congressional District), Rep. Darwin Booher (District 102), Rep. Bill Caul (District 99) and Brandon Fewins, regional manager for Senator Debbie Stabenow, addressed the audience on the importance of volunteerism and the services provided by Mid Michigan Community Action Agency. Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Harris, vice president for Academic Affairs at Ferris State University, presented the significance of collaborative partnerships between higher education institutions and the non-profit sector to serve the community to its fullest. Individual awards were presented to Tom Bailey of Clare County for his volunteer work with the commodity food programs; Dawn Bennett of Clare County for her volunteer work in her child's preschool classroom; Clarence Bush for volunteering with the food distribution programs in Mecosta and Osceola counties; Robert Burgess for volunteering with the housing program; and Lorraine Hobe of Clare County for volunteering at the Clare County Outreach Office. Organization awards were presented to St. Paul's Campus Parrish in Mecosta County and to the United Way Volunteer Center of Midland County for donating holiday gifts to families in the Mecosta and Midland county Early Head Start programs. Family Achievement awards were also given to Rachel and Jon Sutton of Mecosta County, Isabella and Michael Lindauer of Midland County, and Lorrie Stralle of Clare County. These families were nominated by agency staff who felt they had reached the
