MICHAEL JONES PRODUCT DESIGNER I have now been working as a Product Designer for nearly six years aiming to develop a broad understanding of the whole design process from concept to manufacture. I worked for four years within two product design consultancies; managing a wide range of projects myself and successfully taking four innovations to market. I am now working for a global retail solutions company who produce garment hangers and packaging for mass manifacture, working with clients including Adidas, H&M, Orsay, Agent Provocatuer, Selfridges and M&S. In my spare time I also work on illustration, music and film projects. Some selected works over the last six years are shown in this portfolio. Thanks for taking the time to read it.
SELECTED PRODUCT DESIGN WORK 2009 - PRESENT
ENDOCLEAN - MEDICAL DEVICE The start up Endoclean identified an opportunity to replace the existing method of manual cleaning endoscopes with an automated medical cleaning device which could not only decrease cleaning time, but remove the possibility of human error and dangerous contamination. As lead designer I developed the idea from proof of concept to batch manufacture medical trials, carrying out a number of functional development models with the company engineer. The result was a handheld device which could automate the oscillating movement of a wire brush both forward and reverse using assymetrical timer switches whilst releasing detergent into the path of the wire brush. The project spanned intensely over one year and was taken to batch manufacture medical trials. RADFAN - HEAT REDISTRIBUTION DEVICE Radfan secured funding to develop a concept which redistribtes heat from household radiators. After they had achieved proof of concept they approached P1 technology to develop the design towards manufacture. I was assigned as Product Designer and was asked initially to produce a range of sketched styling options in response the clients requirements. One key element was to ensure the enitre product could be manufactured for under ÂŁ10. This was achieved by designing two plastic injection moulded end caps used as styling elements (made from heat resistant ABS plastic) and one plastic extrusion for the functional part of the design. The design is now in mass production has been featured on the BBC and in The Guardian and The Telegraph newspapers. CONCEPT DESIGN During my time at Braiform, Forever 21 contacted us for some broad concept options for a top and clip garment hanger for their new range. I was assigned to produce a wide range of styling concepts with the main constraint for the hanger to be 15mm in thickness in order to maximise hanging space. The main focus was to experiment with mixed materials and dip coating options.The project is currently in at development stage.
GARMENT HANGER CONCEPT DESIGN I have undertaken a number of concept design projects for potential clients during my time at Braiform. Some clients have ncluded M&S, Adidas, H&M & NewYorker. Many projects have aimed at drawing on new material innovations.
SELFRIDGES LINGERIE HANGER DESIGN Selfridges contacted Braiform for a range of options for a womens lingerie hanger with intention of ordering 30million units over the course of one year. I was asked to produce six varied styling options for the client to choose from. Below are some of the concept designs I produced in CAD. Concept one was chosen by the client and is currently being developed for manufacture.
