offering our female target group an unusual product,” says Yvonne Hall Tobiasson, Merchandise & Licensing manager at Volvo Cars’ Global Marketing department. The three shades of nail polish echo three of the colour options offered on the all-new Volvo S60. Vibrant Copper is one of the new model’s launch colours. At the Geneva motor show, visitors to the Volvo Cars were greeted by a nail artiste where they could get their nails painted in one of the three special colours. Ahead of the launch of any new model, Volvo Cars develops a collection of products designed to match the new car, improve brand awareness and generate increased business potential.

The all-new Volvo S60 is an eye-catching car packed with attitude and driving pleasure. As soon as the vehicle went on display at the Geneva motor show, the wraps come off an exclusive collection of selected accessories. They are a perfect match for the car and its target group. For instance, how about an exquisite pair of tooled goatskin gloves or three nail polishes in striking Ember Black, Vibrant Copper and Cosmic White? “Volvo is probably the first car maker in the world to market nail polish. We wanted to do something a bit different, with a touch of humour and a little unexpected twist for the launch of the new car, while at the same time

In conjunction with the launch of the all-new Volvo S60, Volvo Cars has launched a daring and different marketing campaign – the Naughty Volvo campaign. A “Naughty Volvo” website (www.naughty.volvocars.co.za) has been developed as part of the campaign. It will form the platform for various Volvo S60 marketing activities. And it even has a “naughtymeter” – a fun device that let’s you choose a level of naughtiness for the S60. For example twelve short films have been produced at the Volvo test-track and visitors to the Volvo Cars Naughty website can put the S60 through four different ‘tests’, and by using the naughtymeter they decide just how naughty they want the S60 to behave.

Toyota Auris X that forecast in mature markets. This level of growth has major implications for greenhouse gas emissions.

Toyota is committed to the philosophy of sustainable mobility – keeping the planet moving in an efficient and pleasurable manner whilst minimising the impact of vehicles on our society. Toyota believes that it has a leadership role to play in responding to challenges to the environment. It is estimated that by 2020 the global vehicle population could reach 1.5 billion vehicles, almost double the number currently in use, with growth in emerging markets overshadowing

Toyota believes that environmental sustainability is the single biggest challenge facing the automotive industry, and our society, in the 21st century. A response to this challenge affects not only the company’s products, but every aspect of its business, and every person in the company. Toyota’s goal for the future is to achieve zero emissions with zero waste across every aspect of the company’s business. The company believes that, given the time and skills, and through the process of Kaizen (continuous improvement), this will be possible.

MOTOR I NG To this end Toyota invests a substantial amount in the ongoing research and development of alternative energy power sources for motor vehicles. The most visible example of a translation of this research into real world practical applications is Toyota’s leadership in the production and sale of petrol/electric hybrid vehicles. Going in to 2010 Toyota had sold more than 2 million hybrid vehicles. While Toyota Motor Corporation devotes huge resources to advanced alternative fuel R&D projects, it continues a parallel investment in research and development programmes to refine existing internal combustion engine technologies to improve the fuel efficiency, emissions, and driving performance of these engines.

• Increase fuel combustion efficiency; • Not compromise a pleasurable driving experience; • Be a standard feature on all new products, as a zero on-cost option. Based on Toyota’s “Kaizen” philosophy of constant improvement, the company’s engineers have developed new technologies that provide for improved combustion efficiency, reduced internal friction, and weight reductions for engines and transmissions. The overall result is engines that produce more power than the units they replace, but at the same time are more fuel efficient and have lower emissions. The first example of Toyota’s Optimal Drive technology to reach South Africa was the 1.3

Towards the end of 2008 Toyota announced a range of new internal combustion engine technologies, both petrol and diesel, under the banner of Toyota Optimal Drive. The vision of Toyota Optimal Drive, the new core technology for Toyota’s internal combustion engines, is to: •

Reduce harmful emissions;

litre petrol engine that replaced the 1.4 litre engine in the Corolla range in March 2009. That engine offered a power increase of 4% over the engine it replaced with a 12% improvement in fuel economy and a reduction in emissions of 13%. The expansion of Optimal Drive technology in Toyota South Africa’s range of vehicles continued with the introduction of the new Verso. The two new petrol and two new diesel engines offered as the engine options on this popular MPV all feature Optimal Drive technology. Optimal Drive technology is now extended to the complete Auris X range with the introducI ssue 6 / 2 0 1 0

T R AV E LI NG MOTOR tion of the 1.3 litre petrol engine as used in the Corolla and the 1.6 litre Valvematic petrol engine, a further development of Toyota’s Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (Dual VVT-i) technology. This latest technology adds control of both lift and duration to the inlet valve variable timing to improve intake airflow volume and speed management. This enhances combustion process management to deliver more power with lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. As is the case with the Corolla, the 1.3 litre Optimal Drive engine offers a power increase of 4% (74 kW) together with a significant improvement in fuel economy and a reduction in emissions over the 1.4 litre engine it replaces. On the 1.6 litre engine, Valvematic technology offers an increase of 6 kW (97 Kw) in power over the engine it replaces while torque is up by 3Nm (160Nm). Fuel consumption is improved while emissions are reduced. Optimal Drive strategy is also employed on

the 2.0 D-4D diesel engine offered in the Auris X range in South Africa. As with the petrol engines the focus is on maximizing performance and driveability whilst minimising fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and particulate emissions. Torque on the Auris XD 2.0 D-4D is increases by 10 Nm. The D-4D direct injection diesel engine features latest generation piezo electric injectors to precisely control the injection of fuel into the cylinders. This precise control, in conjunction with a maximum common rail injection pressure of 200 MPa, results in shorter injection times and more efficient combustion. Six-speed manual transmissions are featured across the Auris X range as an element of the Optimal Drive technology. Optimal Drive provides a true example of Toyota’s drive towards zero emissions and sustainable mobility.
