TIME! It’s peculiar to see how quickly time goes by these days. Before you realize a week is over, then a month and a year… Wow! I was thinking the other day how long a day felt in my childhood, and a week, and a year. As a child the excitement to think of the future, what adventures are waiting around the corner ... It went like a blink of an eye. Let’s make a resolution to enjoy and savour every moment, rather than ponder over the previous year and time that passed. Remember you can’t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future.

While moving into Autumn season, make use of the golden opportunity to appreciate the outdoors while it is still relatively warm outside. Living in South Africa, we are privileged to have most of the year wonderful weather. Let’s go for long walks. Enjoy the sunsets. There is so much beauty around us. Enjoy the warmth of the sun, but also of THE SON! God wants us to be happy and to live our lives to its full potential. Always remember, you were created with a uniqueness only you possess, and abilities you need to share with the rest of mankind. This edition is once again a testament to the outstanding talent that exists in our country. It has been such a delight to compile this edition, so please enjoy! From all of us at Ray Magazine, we bless you with the very best for the rest of the year. May it be a year of overwhelming blessings, peace in your life, and personal satisfaction in whatever you do, may you also grow into the full stature of the image you were created in. Don’t miss out on good opportunities.

Aquamarine, splashed with turquoise, some distant indigo, a dash of cobalt blue and a sprinkling of silver.

djumbe Island e M Text & Images Karin Peterson

Close your eyes

and slowly create a wild fantasy about a tropical island.

Let your mind take you to the middle of a balmy blue ocean. Did I say blue? No – try aquamarine, splashed with turquoise, some distant indigo, a dash of cobalt blue and a sprinkling of silver.

R ay M zine aga Is

Gentle waves bob around you, gently swelling and softly fading – but there is never a breaking moment to disturb the constant, almost inaudible, sound of the still ocean. Add images of an unendingly long stretch of powdery white beach with giant shells posing at strategic ooh-ahh moments. Even the shoreline rocks, which invite

Mozambique exploration, seem thoughtfully placed by a creative power at just the right distances.

As if this weren’t enough, add a rare sense of delicious solitude, mounds of food to suit a gastronome’s palate, fine wines and then another indulgence after indulgence after imaginationnumbing indulgence as time floats by and ceases to matter. Then with a gasp and a glow, realize that this imagined Paradise is reality - it’s called Medjumbe Island and it’s not too far from where you are right now. Off the coast of northern Mozambique in Southern Africa, lolling in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean lies this private island jewel, where real life ends and idylls begin. Less than

an hour’s flight into the ocean from the little town of Pemba in Northern Mozambique, Medjumbe is the ultimate destination for a tropical island getaway, for couples seeking quiet experiences, harassed business executives seeking quiet energy replenishment – even for solo travelers seeking space to breathe and just be... The entire island hosts only one lodge, with rooms cleverly positioned to ensure that you feel as if you are the only being on the island, without ever feeling isolated. Accommodation consists of thirteen free standing units, each with King-size, netted beds. All the units have been re-decorated in the past few months and cleverly offer a gentle, muted interior which refuses to detract from the natural splendour which is a short step away. Each unit has its own deck and plunge pool, (overlooking the ocean, of course – everything does at Medjumbe!) complete with hammock, loungers and outdoor table seating. Bathrooms are spacious and offer not only indoor or outdoor shower options, but huge baths with sliding windows that allow the island air to breeze across your scented bath bubbles, with only the faintest flicker to your surrounding candles. Of course there are TV sets in the rooms but surrounded as

The romance of the island experience goes without saying.

Gardening

What is there about gardening that appeals to everyone? Part of the pleasure lies in appreciating the beauty of the lay-out with its background of foliage and green lawn and its interesting features such as ponds and winding pathways. Nothing can equal the joy of the amateur who has built his own garden and knows that every tree and flower is there by his own planting. There is also nothing more irritating for the amateur than to find later that had he known where to place his plants and how to care for them they might have thrived and been a greater success. “It’s easy when you know how” is a phrase often heard. “Know-how” is important in the enjoyment of gardening and in the interest of the garden.

THE HANTAM NATIONAL

BOTANICAL GARDEN

Explore Wild Secrets under Endless Skies South Africa boasts an amazing diversity of indigenous plants. It is the purpose of SANBI’s Conservation Gardens & Tourism Division to manage this network of nine National Botanical Gardens (NBG’s) in South Africa and to raise environmental awareness about conservation of our national treasures. Text & Images Hantam National Botanical Gardens

We as South Africans should do everything we can to assist in conserving our flora so that our children can one day enjoy the same magnificent flora that we do. In the following editions of Ray we will showcase spectacular Botanical Gardens, with the Hantam NBG our focus for this issue. Being the first National Botanical Garden in the Northern Cape, and the 9th in South Africa, it is regarded as one of the world’s most special botanical treasures. It lies just outside Niewoudtville, on the Bokkeveld Plateau. The pleasures of the Hantam National Botanical Garden are like expensive champagne, to be enjoyed slowly, taking in the delights of each sip and always leaving you wanting more... The farm Glenlyon forms the core of the new Hantam National Botanical Garden. In 1883 the Farm Katlaagte (later Glenlyon) was purchased by James MacGregor, who came out from Scotland with his family in 1840. He eventually established himself at Citrusdal and married Lenie van Wyk. One of his sons, Joseph MacGregor moved to Nieuwoudtville and started to farm on Groenrivier. He married Elizabeth Moyle, eventually known to everybody in the district as “Mumsie.” Joseph became very ill and with his wife was compelled to move to Cape Town. Managers were appointed to look after the farm. After his death in 1922 his wife sadly realized that the farm was on the road to bankruptcy. Gordon, the eldest child, was compelled to terminate his studies at Oxford University to save the sinking ship in 1925. In 1928 Gordon married Helen Lyon and they moved to Nieuwoudtville. In 1929 the Glenlyon homestead was built, having been designed by John Lyon, Helen’s father, who had qualified as an architect in Scotland. Incidentally, John Lyon also designed the beautiful school building in Nieuwoudtville. Glenlyon was named by Gordon to honour his wife, Helen Lyon, and his own Scottish origins. In 1961 Neil, son of Gordon and Helen decided to cease wheat cropping on Glenlyon.

Lifestyle, Arts & Culture

Art is not just daydreaming, it is primarily a manual skill, and one has to be a good workman. By understanding the material and techniques, the artist can avoid pitfalls and increase the pleasures of producing art. Along with a learning hand, one must develop a seeing eye, and, for many people, this is the most difficult part. It is vital to train your eyes by really looking at the world around you, and to keep on doing your art all the time, and develop your own style.

MARiA ART

“I believe

my highest calling in life is my relationship with God, my husband, my children and with all people. My friends and family provide a balance in my life and keeps me humble. They are all extraordinary people! God inspires me for He is the creator of all beautiful things. He called me for His purpose and in obedience and love of art, I paint with all I am to worship Him.”

During one balmy, windless morning the Ray team found themselves in the delightful company of an exceptional artist and her charming husband. Maria Magdalena Oosthuizen (Arnelda) and her husband Francois created a tranquil haven at their art gallery, “House of Maria” in Marsh Street, Mossel Bay. One is awestruck by the beauty and creativity the moment you set foot in the door; only to be surpassed by the bubbly personality that greets you in the foyer of the

gallery. In the adjacent rooms her works of art are displayed as well as her latest informal clothing range. Her art evokes intense emotion, leaving no one untouched, reflecting an individual who deeply cares about her work, family, environment and fellow human being. Who are you and what do you do? I am first and foremost a disciple of Jesus Christ. I am a wife and a mother of three beautiful children. The Lord has given me many creative talents and at the moment I am using two of them, which also creates an income. I paint and design clothes! What’s your background? I had the best artist training by observing the Lord’s creation. No formal training in art or designing. All that I have in talent and success is

You use a distinctive set of colours in your paintings. Please tell us more… Yes I truly believe every person (not only artists) have a built-in colour palette. I have always preferred rather dull colours with the exception of red. The tools of your trade: Which medium do you work in mostly and why? I use acrylic mostly because of its fast drying attributes; in some instances I’ll use oil. I paint with a brush, but to create movement I’ll use a palette knife. What role do you think the artist have in today’s society? Good question! I believe a HUGE one! Why else would God create the creators! I believe we should be responsible for the HALT! Look, look again… relax, sit back and breathe! Enjoy living in that moment created, that feeling of gladness, joy, mercy, feel again! The talk to one self, why are you so downcast o my soul! Rejoice! God

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above; It comes down from the father of all light. James 1:17 natural, glory to my King! I have searched in many places for an outlet for this “creativeness” inside me, such as Photography (2 years in England), a Web Design diploma, Diploma as a hair stylist after I had my children. Before all this I used to work in fast moving consumer goods, selling and promoting deodorants etc. Later became marketing manager for a company, selling Rice, whilst studying marketing management, and business development. Although that season is over, I developed a solid business sense, and strong work ethics. What’s integral to your work as an artist? To reflect beauty and the essence of life, but most of all, to be true to my feelings, my heart and myself.

Health Diet plays a tremendous role in maintaining or destroying our health. In addition to eating badly, we can also live incorrectly by ignoring our need for sufficient exercise, fresh air and sunshine. So, incorrect dietary and living habits combined, result in many common health problems. Modern living has a lot to answer for!

Lose weight

and keep it off, permanently. There are only two ways to lose weight and burn body fat. The first is to increase your metabolic rate and the second is reduce caloric intake. (i.e. exercise and eat less) FOUR EASY STEPS TO THE GOOD LIFE 1. Increase your Metabolism 2. Reduce your Caloric Intake 3. Drink lots of water 4. Have a Good Attitude INCREASING THE METABOLIC RATE This is the speed which your body “burns” energy. Many people, especially ladies, have slow metabolisms due to lack of exercise and crash diets. Exercise and proper nutrition will increase your metabolism. You will have more energy, sleep better and be more alert. R ay M zine aga Is

84

1. Increase your cardiovascular exercise such as cycling, running, walking, climbing stairs etc. You don’t have to run the comrades marathon. Instead of trying to find a parking space closest to the door of the shopping center, park further away

9 sue

and walk. You may even save time. Walk up and down the stairs to the next level instead of taking the lift. Move on to more strenuous exercise when you feel ready and when you want to. Exercise in a way that is easy to maintain as a lifestyle. If it is too difficult you are not going to keep it up.

Eliminate fizzy drinks completely from your diet. Drink water instead. Eliminate fat from your diet as much as possible. Eliminate junk food from your diet completely.

2. Good Multi-Vitamins are essential for increasing the metabolism. Your metabolism will not increase sufficiently if you only exercise and don’t eat a balanced diet. 3. Stay away from “miracle” diets and weight loss products. You may lose weight but you will put it all back and more. 4. Be honest with yourself. Ask yourself if you really want to lose weight, and then take the necessary action. CALORIC INTAKE The secret to weight loss is to take in fewer calories than your body is consuming, this will enable your body to “eat” into body fat, which is really stored energy reserves. An average woman needs to consume 2000 calories per day (men 2500). In order to lose weight we need to consume less than this. The easiest way to do this is to follow a Weight Watchers or Weigh Less type diet. This will also develop good eating habits for the future. Eat the food you enjoy, just eat a little less.

These 4 are all comfort foods, remember, nothing tastes as good as thin feels. Never crash diet, this robs the body of nutrients resulting in a metabolic slow down. Reduce the amount of butter or margarine on your bread gradually until you don’t use any. This will reduce your fat intake drastically. About 5kg of fat loss over a year period. The most important factor to a good diet is to eat three meals per day. This will start to speed up the metabolism. If you are really hungry, eat! Try to eat fresh fruit and vegetables if possible. Reducing calories this way (about 400 cal per day) will result in a sure and steady weight loss of about 1 kg per week. Slow and Steady, but lost for good. DRINK WATER Many people have told me that they don’t like the taste of water. My question to you is: Is being fat better or worse than the taste of water? You need to drink two litres of water every day.

e9 ssu

agazine I

It is fun gaining the weight and not so much fun losing it!

85

M

Reduce sugar intake as much as possible. Use artificial sweetener.

ATTITUDE Many people complain that they are on diet.

R ay

TIP: Introduce change gradually. Doing away with that extra biscuit a day will lead to a body fat reduction of 2 kg over a year.

TIP: Drink a full glass of water after every cup of tea or coffee. By doing this you have already increased your intake to one and a half litres.

Inspirational Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty and painful, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if it is faced with an open mind. Knowledge is like a garden, if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested. “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30. For us, to be like Jesus is not striving to attain perfection but demonstrating the qualities of His life such as forgiveness, patience, reliability, prayerfulness and concern for others.

The Ephesians understood wealth. Ephesus was a city with marble streets, mosaic sidewalks, a massive temple that was considered one of the wonders of the Greek world, a busy port, a popular athletic arena, one of the finest libraries in the first century, and villas filled with artwork, tapestries, silks, exotic birds and animals. Caravans from the east routinely ended their journeys at Ephesus and ships from ports throughout the Mediterranean brought the riches of Egypt, Rome, Greece, Spain, and Northern Africa. The apostle Paul came to town and blew their minds by presenting a type of wealth they had never encountered before. Paul presented to them the God of all riches, the God who gave.

There

has never been a time in history when most people did not believe that possessing great wealth is the key to happiness. Yet time and again we have seen millionaires and billionaires live miserable lives and even end their lives. Or their children wander through life aimlessly, selfdestructive. Some have even used their wealth to destroy others. Why? Because their wealth consisted of temporal things, not eternal. Material wealth is not evil in and of itself. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:10 that it is the love of money that is the root of all evil. Mankind must connect to the God of all riches to truly enjoy, and to avoid being controlled and owned by material wealth.

Thank God, when that divine connection takes place and we are gloriously born again, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in our hearts and we begin the adventure of the truly privileged: discovering our riches in Christ.

His only begotten Son, His most precious possession. The wealth the apostle Paul brought to Ephesus is Jesus Christ. In Him is everything a human being could ever dream of, hope for, or desire and more. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ”. Ephesians 1:3. This whole, beautiful letter to the Ephesians, the favourite of many, is one of the gems of the New Testament. Paul is taken up with overwhelming goodness that God in Christ has showered on believers, and with His amazing plan to unite Gentiles and Jews in a new community, the body of Christ. Here we have one of the finest descriptions of the Christian life in the entire New Testament. This letter is full of joy, praise, and thanksgiving. It is a fitting reply to the wonder of God’s amazing grace in Christ, poured out in abundance on those chosen to know His Love. The letter opens with a sequence of statements about God’s blessings, which are interspersed with a remarkable variety of expressions drawing attention to God’s wisdom, forethought and purpose. Paul considers the foundation for all of our blessings in Christ. God is all-powerful. He is fully capable and able in all situations, at all times.

Photography

Until recently, every family had at least one film camera in the household. Today, however, most of those film cameras have been replaced by digital cameras. To the end user, using a point-and-shoot digital camera may be little different from using a similar point and shoot film camera, with the notable exception of how the images are output, on little flash memory cards instead of on film that must be developed. One technology replaces the other in performing the same task, that of photographically documenting people, places, and events. A thing to remember though, is that no matter how serious you might get about your photography, always try to have fun. Advance your skills as you see fit, but make sure that what you’re doing is enjoyable. The best photographs capture a certain joy, and that’s something you as the photographer have to provide. So keep learning, keep shooting, and keep having fun!

Capetonian

, Nick Aldridge, was born and raised in the Mother City and is obsessed with the sea and the coast. Surfer, diver and swimmer are only some of the names he uses to describe himself. To him photography means technology, beauty and the place where the spirit and the material world merges. His images have a dreamlike vibe to them; I’d describe them as beautiful, confident, sassy, compelling, haunting, bizarre, weird, wild and wonderful!

Do you have any formal training regarding photography? A stint at Cape Tech (graphic design, got bored), Fine Art at Michaelis (two years, got bored) photographed houses for the property pages of Die Burger for a week before being offered a job as a photographer . . . Fell in love with Photography and became so obsessed it was impossible not to learn. How technical is your photography? It is sometimes very technical, sometimes not at all. I have had a longstanding love of subtle Photoshop (and now Lightroom) adjustments. My shooting is mostly with the same settings on the camera though. (Shallow depth of field, and straight lenses.) Where is your favourite place to live and work as a photographer in the world and why? On the edge of a body of water, in an ancient city, close to a beautiful, wise face. In a strange and exotic land! Define the word “beauty”!

Motoring

Just over a century ago sail boats, later steamships, canals, railroads, and the telegraph were up and running. They were the technological marvels of the 19th century, setting the stage for the 20th century. Yet the invention that would spark a revolution in transportation was a simple two-wheeler-the bicycle. Its popularity in the 1880s and 1890s spurred interest in roads. However, it was the car that was to dominate the new roads. Wow!, and look at the cars today!

Décor & Design South African décor continues to fuel patterns, styles and designs of interior fashion throughout the world. With a distinct interest in discovering alternatives that are more earth-friendly, today’s decor and design trends are also more environmentally minded and nowhere is this more evidently expressed than in the local design scene. More natural products are being used to create pure simplicity and a serene environment. On these décor pages we pay tribute to local heroes who embrace this theology. The most important trend remains that of individualism and expression – so feel free to take only what suits you from delineated trends and amalgamate them all to create something truly unique that suits your personality and taste. Here’s some great nature inspired, eco friendly, salt of the earth décor pieces.

The Day of Grace A Children’s Story written by Engela Herbst Mr. Grossen wasn’t easily impressed. He had seen some of the most talented musicians and singers in the music industry, but he was stunned. This kind of gift was as rare as a treasure – and the child had no formal training at all. As Nina sang he could see that she was not very comfortable and was fiddling with her hands, showing her inexperience – but oh that voice! He needed to talk to the lady in charge of the House of Safety. If Nina could come for a few private lessons... Suzan and Lydia were both looking for tissues in their bags and Grace just stared at her friend. She could not believe what she saw and heard. It was the first time she saw an angel! She had felt them around her before and mommy always prayed that God would send his angels to protect them. The thought was not strange to her at all, what surprised her mostly was that the angel helped Nina sing. Grace didn’t know they do that. She thought angels were only for serious stuff like protection and warfare and so on. The other mothers in the audience were clearly quite emotional. Most were wiping their eyes. The auditorium had a totally different feel to it.

Nina finished her song and gave a small curtesy bow and walked off the huge stage, shaking slightly. There were a few more auditions – some brilliant, some not, but none came close to

Nina’s. Mr. Grossen was looking for new pupils. As the students get older they move to adult choirs. He then fills the gaps with new faces and voices. All and all he was happy, it was a successful afternoon. He had his list finalised by the time the last boy finished his audition. Mr. Grossen read out the names of the children who made the cut. They had to stay behind. He thanked the others for coming. Nina was so excited. She might be only ten years old, but she knew that she never before had an opportunity like this. It made her heart happy to sing – it just felt right, as if she was made to do it. Mr. Grossen spoke to the children first, congratulating them on their successful auditions. Then his attention shifted to the mothers. He explained about the programme and practice times, and so on. After the talk he asked if Suzan and Nina could stay behind. “Nina, you have an extraordinary talent”, he said in a calm soft voice. “I would like you to come for a few private lessons. It will help you with posture and stuff like that.” Nina’s smile was like sunshine, she was happy and felt needed and loved. Grace sat in the front row, looking at her friend while she said a silent prayer. “Thank you Jesus that you hear our prayers. That you love us when even our mommies forget about us, and that nothing can separate us from your love.” RM

“E R R R R... E E E E E... O O O O O... A H H H H H…! Out...out... AAAAH... out is my leg! Where on earth am I? I don’t know this place at all. I wonder how did I get here? AAAAAAAAAGH! It is so very COL L L L L L D!!! “O h h h h h h h... O h h h h h h h h... O h h h h h h h h!” Cries the skeleton that just climbed out of one of the graves. “Look at me now, all that’s left of me is bones! Maybe the best thing for me is just to climb back in that same hole I just got out off.” Suddenly a voice came out of nowhere, “ ENOUGH, ENOUGH of this feeling sorry for yourself! If I have to listen longer to you feeling sorry for yourself, I am going to climb in the hole you just got out of. You stand there crying like a baby!” “E E E E... O O O O... W W W W HO ARE

“If you stop crying, then I will tell you of another donkey that could talk” replied Donkey. A long, long time ago the children of God moved closer and closer to the Promised Land. In that time there was a king with the name ‘Balak’. Balak and his people heard about the favour of God on his children and that everywhere they went they experienced prosperity. Balak and all his people were frightened, just as you are now. Instead of calling all his soldiers together to go and fight the Israelites, he called Balaam. Balaam was known as a very wise man. Balak commanded his messengers to go call Balaam and to tell him all about the successes of the Israelites, and to ask him to come to the king immediately. King Balak was busy with a very EVIL plan. He gave his messengers a big bag full of gold to give to Balaam. The messengers showed the gold to Balaam and said; “All this gold can be yours if you will put a terrible curse on the Israelites.”

“I just wonder how is it possible for a donkey to speak? I think my eyes and ears are lying to me. O h h h h h h... O h h h h h h... O h h h h h …! Something is very wrong with me. I am only bones and hear donkeys that talk.”

It’s very dark and very spooky tonight. All you can see is a crescent moon and a few lonely stars.

YOU?” Ask the skeleton. “Just call me ‘DONKEY’. “DONKEY?” asks the skeleton. “Is there anything funny about it?” Donkey asks. “E E E – O O O - N O! “ replied the skeleton.

“G R R R R R R R R R R R R G R R R R R R R RRRRR–GRRRRRRRRRRR-GRR R R R R R!” is all you could hear.

That night the Lord spoke to Balaam in a dream and told him to never curse what the Lord has blessed and not to go to the king. When Balak heard that Balaam said no, he immediately offered more gold. This time Balaam could not resist the offer and immediately saddled his donkey and set out to be part of Balak’s evil plan. Suddenly the donkey stopped dead in its tracts. Balaam shouted, kicked and hit, but the donkey did not move. “Why are you hitting me?” the donkey asked. “Have I ever been unfaithful to you?” What Balaam did not know was that it was the angel of the Lord that blocked the road. Only the donkey was able to see the angel. Suddenly Balaam’s eyes were opened, “You must not have hit the donkey!” the angel said. “That donkey that you have treated so badly just saved your life. If he had not stopped when I told him to, you would have been killed. Continue with your journey but, from now on, you must just say what I told you to.” When Balaam reached king Balak he could not curse the children of the Lord, he could only bless them. He could only say what the Lord told him to say. “So, why are you telling me this?” murmured the skeleton. “It does not help me; I am still sitting here in this dark, cold place.” “I am telling you this story so that you can know that the Son of God wants to be a angel for you as well. He is the One who can save you from this situation. He is the One that can save you from the dark and cold

places.” The Word of God says: “Forsaking the straight way, they have gone astray, following the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.” (2 Peter 215) “I give up! I get the message! Balaam could not refuse the gold. We must be very careful in life to not make compromises,” says the skeleton. “Well done, I see that you are getting the message. If we carry on doing things against God’s will we can get ourselves into dangerous situations,” remarks the donkey. What a beautiful story, can I also come closer to hear what you are telling?” ask a strange voice. The skeleton jump to his feet, “Who are you? “And where do you come from?” “Of course, you are welcome,” replied the donkey. “Thank you, do you know more stories about donkeys?” asks the stranger. The two skeletons move a bit closer so that they can hear every word the donkey has to say. Donkey started: “One day there was a very poor farmer. All he had was a small piece of land and a donkey. The farmer loved his donkey very much and in return the donkey helped the farmer with all the chores on the farm.

One day the farmer decided to dig a big hole in the ground where he can dump all the rubbish in. After he dug the hole it started to rain. It rained for days on end. When the rain eventually stopped the farmer could not find his donkey

anywhere. He looked everywhere, but couldn’t find his donkey. After a while he heard the donkey with a soft voice calling from deep down in the hole. The farmer felt so sorry for his donkey down in the hole. He tried everything to get his donkey out but nothing he tried was successful. Eventually the farmer decided to gather all the rubbish he could find and dumped it on top of the donkey. He decided that it will be better for his donkey to be buried alive than to die a slow death of exhaustion. To the farmers’ surprise, after he dumped the last load of rubbish, there appears his beloved donkey. His donkey was very clever and used the rubbish that was supposed to kill him, to his advantage. The donkey used each load of rubbish and stumped it under his feet and load by load he got closer to his rescue.” “Oh! It is wonderful. That donkey was very clever!” says the one skeleton. “I’ve got it,” says the other skeleton. To be obedient and to persevere can help us to get out of big trouble.” “Yes,” says the other skeleton, “do you know more donkey stories.” Without the two skeletons knowing, more skeletons are moving closer to hear what the donkey has to say. “Long, long time ago in Jerusalem the people were very excited about a man that was dead for four days and who is suddenly alive and well and walking around as if nothing has happened. Everyone was talking about this man. Out of the crowd someone was shouting, “Do you know that Jesus who raised that man from the death is coming to Jerusalem?” The crowd was getting very excited by the news. In the meanwhile Jesus commanded His disciples to fetch Him a young donkey. When the people heard this they did not mind at all to give the young donkey to the disciples. Meanwhile the people were gathering palm branches and waited enthusiastic for Jesus to arrive. Slowly the young donkey with Jesus on its back entered the city. Everyone was shouting and waving the palm branches and clothes. They were cheering, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who

comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (John 12: 13) The young donkey entered Jerusalem with its valuable cargo on its back.” By now all the skeletons are on their feet shouting, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah!” When they start to calm down they recognize that everything looks different. There are no more skeletons and graveyards. Everything looks so different, even the dark cold is gone. “YEAH,” thinks the donkey, it is just as the Word says, “Prophecy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Breath came into them; and they lived and stood up upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.” (Ezekiel 37) RM
