New amongst the contemporary art scene, Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack are certainly making a splash with their new exhibit “JenniferXJennifer”. ! Focusing on mainly bringing back the true essence of the 90s, both artists are definitely Canada’s finest up and comers. ! Creating an extreme workflow influenced by modern technology, media and downright culture, Jennifer Chan has created quite a name for herself when creating highly influential art. Working mostly with visually stimulating and dramatic pieces the Canadian artist has worked in Europe as well as North America. Though this exhibit is a joint project, Chan has produced a variety of solo shows that have earned her many fantastic reviews. ! Just recently graduating from Syracuse University with a masters in Fine Arts, the Young artist has immediately set off on creating works that revolve around pop culture no matter the decade. Following, branding, celebrities, and technology in any decade give Chan’s Exhibits a very refreshing and different mood and feel. ! ! Involved in Art, education and administration since the early 2000s, Jennifer Cherniack has certainly created a name for herself. Creating works that definitely follow the same guidelines as Jennifer Chan’s, Cherniack’s works definitely have a feel of their own. Currently Living In Syracuse, New York with a Masters of fine Arts from Concordia, her current living situation gives us a bit of an insight into how the two artist have come to know and create with each other. ! Creating Pieces of art since 2003, Works like “ The History of Art According To Miley Cyrus” and “Jay-Z vs. The Museum” make it very clear why the two artist get along very well. As an Administrator, Teacher, Photographer, Graphic artist and Fine Artist, Cherniack definitely has all the capabilities to create some of the most pop culturally influential art of the 21st century. With an incredible portfolio and a database filled with past artists, the future of Cherniack’s career is the complete opposite of bleak.
Always crea#ng works relevant to today’s society, both Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack have tried to definitely represent culture in every single artwork and exhibi#on. With exhibits ranging from early 2003 to just this past moth, both freshly graduate ar#sts have created for themselves a very dense collec#on of artwork, themes and exhibits. With social media at their finger #ps and an unstoppable crea#ve minds, the two ar#st have created gold with not only their solo shows but JenniferXJennifer itself.
Crea#ng an overwhelming 90s feel the JenniferXjennifer exhibits incorporates 90s themes and culture into many of its artworks. Including popular television shows like saved by the bell and Even Stevens too the common pizza box. Although not mocking the 90s nor gra#fying it, the exhibit itself more or less explores cultural scene and technology at the #me with a very sincere abstract tone. Incorpora#ng the use of 90s lingo, technology, colors and overall dimension the exhibit begins to explore an more in depth meaning as what we once thought to be more simple and to the point becomes all the more technical and incredibly deep. With an abstract feel, the artworks begin to relay a message that might not have been seen without the abstract tones. Using everything from projectors, pain#ngs, t-‐shirts, bed sheets and basic words, the exhibit goers begin to reflect
on their own pass and how all these things that seemed so unimportant at the #me had made all the difference in their lives.
As the exhibit con#nued, more and more pieces became more and more linked. Different pieces would lead to others and others would explain past or future pieces. In a strange way, the exhibit itself was one giant piece of art. As an art consumer taking this exhibit and all it en#rety in, one must no#ce one of its key themes, the Internet. The exhibit seemed concentrate on giving its praise to the Internet, linking much of its art to the Internet itself. With the pieces not only taking a posi#ve turn for the be^er, one can only express apprecia#on for the insane and drama#c colors and vibes the Ar#st successfully packed into their show. U#lizing the u^er space of the Eastern Bloc, the exhibit really captures the essence of a 90s lo_ and uses the space very well. Crea#ng a very dynamic use of space, the individual pieces of art are accented by the spacing, ligh#ng and over composi#on. With so much space, the ar#sts are really given a solid chance to best demonstrate each individual pieces no ma^er how connected they may in fact be.
With both ar#sts s#ll u#lizing the use of pop culture, technology and culture in general, both Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack hold some serious similari#es in their works and characteris#cs Jennifer Chan has always immersed herself in crea#ng pieces she herself had found cultural significant. Her works and exhibits range from shows like “The Na#onal Selfie Portrait Gallery” to “Exci#ng Virtuals” with Georges Jacotey. Both ar#sts really seem to share the same quali#es when it comes to the overall produc#on of the pieces and exhibit themselves. In-‐turn this fantas#c friendship and partnership has definitely paid off. As for Jennifer Chernicak her past experience has really been an onslaught of ar#s#c diversity for she has always been an ar#st, educator and administrator.
We live in a world where everything we could possibly imagine is at the #p of our fingers. When it comes to social networking, sky’s the limit. Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook and Twi^er can all literally be found in your pocket. The 21st century has definitely influenced the way we communicate to one another, aiding not only industries but people as well. Ar#st has certainly taken advantage of this new technology, but is it cool? Has it gone too far? JenniferXjennifer was a fantas#c exhibit that relayed tones of depth and meaning, but where was everyone? Informa#on these days are incredibly easy to come by, crea#ng an event, promo#ng it and spreading the word are extremely important. As a star#ng ar#st, crea#ng a name for you is key, but why do some ar#sts have this nega#ve percep#on of promo#on? JenniferXJennifer created a very hip atmosphere with a very welcoming environment. Yet, the turn out wasn’t exactly outstanding. Both ar#sts are young and freshly graduated with degrees in fine arts. Endless promo#onal opportuni#es are placed in their hands but not a word of the exhibit was spread out. Instead the Ar#st relied on the venue to promote. “CultMtl” and “Eastern Bloc” did most of the adver#sing, which in the end it was clearly not enough. The exhibit really limited itself, crea#ng a sense of “bare minimum” when it came to adver#sing but a sense of “above and beyond” when it came to the art itself. Art will always try its best to broadcast
a message or an Idea, much like adver#sing. An adver#sing model can range from something verbal to something symbolic. Its not incredibly complicated to relay a message, it is however difficult for that said message to capture an audience. With tools like Tumblr, Instagram and Twi^er, crea#ng a communica#on model should be incredibly easy, I believe the downfall of thus exhibit was its lack of defining a Target market.
Concentra#ng on factors like Public rela#ons, promo#on and personal sales are incredibly important on crea#ng a strong showing. exhibit is nothing with out people to respect and admire the pieces. The JenniferXJennifer exhibit really missed out on all the quali#es of a solid ad campaign. Both Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack have Tumblr, Facebook and Twi^er, though personal accounts, they definitely have somewhat of a following. Yet instead of capturing the essence of social networking and taking advantage of their accounts, they instead disregarded them and concentrated on the artwork itself.
Eastern Bloc has always played a key role in the Montreal art scene, though not situated in the greatest of neighborhoods. The exhibit has definitely held a very solid following with much of its adver#sing indeed working. Seeking the help of blogs and ar#sts, much of its adver#sing reaches its target market with emails and subscrip#ons. The only strong communica#on tools both Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack used would be the resources Eastern Bloc and other small blog sites provided. Although in the end the ar#st definitely had a small turnout, it definitely could’ve been improved. Adver#sing can range from something incredibly personal to something non-‐ personal; it’s the message in the end that counts.
The art market has been and always will be a very difficult market. Art can build, destroy, hurt and love. It can be open, closed, new or old. It comes in different shapes, sizes and colors but there will always be a market for it. The JenniferX Jennifer Exhibit demonstrates a very pure theme that creates a very open atmosphere. The only downfall would be its lack of defining a target market. Its lack of adver#sing had le_ it figura#vely blowing in the wind. If only they had found a more pure and honest market rather than the underground one. Montreal has always played a very key role in the art scene, filled with venues, museums and exhibits; Montreal will always have a very pure group of art consumers and Exhibit goers. The show created a very cool and relaxed set of values and pieces that can most definetly relate to anyone born before the 21st century, but also creates a nice set of works that call be appreciated by all. Defining a target market isn’t always easy, crea#ng a campaign that can reach the minds of that specific market is no easy task either. Like most Exhibits reaching out the regulars is important but reaching out to a newer market is incredibly important too. JenniferXjennifer, most definitely didn’t reach out to the newer market. Instead they went with
a very underground crowed, a market, which in turn did not give them the audience they were probably hoping for. The 21st century revolu#onized the way we reach out and communicate with each other. Different social media sites reach out to different audiences and communi#es. Instead of crea#ng a solid build up with tools like Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook, the exhibit fell short and lost a key factor, a target audience. Although the works inside the exhibit would definitely find an audience, the lack of word spreading and event planning le_ JenniferXJennifer to its own demises. Though the Exhibit didn’t have an actual Target Market, I did have a turnout. If it weren’t for the Easter Bloc and fellow blogs sites, the end to this exhibit would have been way more disappoin#ng for this outstanding exhibits.
JenniferXjennifer was an incredible exhibit that definitely le_ me with many solid ideas and influences I could walk away with. The art was special, open, genuine and relatable. It created an atmosphere I could thoroughly enjoy and the crowd (although small) were kind and open. The Eastern Bloc was clean and well spaced, although not situated in the best of areas, the ar#sts and guest seemed to make due and appreciate everything nonetheless.
With all the technology available these days, it’s a shame such a fantas#c exhibit with such incredible pieces fell short in so many categories. Li^le to no communica#on tools were used, besides a few blogs posts and word of mouth the exhibit was le_ to a small showing. A poor excuse for such well educated ar#sts, educators and administrators. There shouldn’t be a single excuse for its lack of tools and audience. With The exhibit lacking any verbal, symbolic or wri^en tools, the event planning so un personable that it le_ out a giant part of the Montreal art community. Improvement wise, the exhibit shoulve reached out to every single social media site. It should’ve grasped the importance of social outlets like Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook and twi^er. The Eastern Bloc, although like said before was not in the greatest area did however create much of the hype and word of mouth for the ar#sts and exhibit. With such a lack of tools, target market and Body of work, the evalua#on of this exhibit was not easy. The show had so many incredible opportuni#es and possibili#es to become such an outstanding show yet it seems that
u^er disregard for any sort of adver#sement or marke#ng had le_ it to its own unfortunate demises. Although both ar#sts do in fact have many of the above-‐men#oned social networking sites, it seems rather unfortunate none of them men#oned the exhibit itself. Instead they should’ve created an event, planned out a marke#ng strategy and most importantly reached out to the art scene new comers. Reaching out to new comers is an incredibly important factor because it creates a rela#onship and bond with the guest that can be re-‐issued when another Exhibit is created. Without crea#ng an audience, there’s no doubt the exhibit will fail. In the end, Jennifer Chan and Jennifer Cherniack created an incredible exhibit with a fantas#c atmosphere and as a regular in the art scene I very much enjoyed my self. Although the exhibit fell short in many criteria, I do believe however the art spoke for itself and even though the turn out wasn’t great I do believe what li^le people showed up walked away with something special.
