ome join us for an encore performance of the premier event of the season, the After Holiday Party and Yankee Swap. Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. The social hour and dinner are spectacular enough, even in a group that defines itself as a “social club, with a serious car problem”, but the Yankee Swap makes the event. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. The original emcee team of Alban and Gutjahr, more popularly known as The Bob and Manny Show, will once again host this sell-out event. Each person who wants to play just needs to bring a wrapped “car-related” gift, valued at $25 to $30. (Of course, if you prefer, you may attend the event and not participate in the Swap, but be prepared to feel left out once the fun begins!) Be sure to bring a gift that you’d be happy to take home, because you never know what will happen! All gifts are placed together and names are drawn one at a time… each person has the choice of choosing a new gift, or stealing one that has been opened before. Don’t worry, the rules will be explained prior to the start of the Swap and Manny and Bob will make sure you laugh so much your cheeks hurt!

Winning Gift at PCA Parade THE PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

W

e were very fortunate to attend the 59th Parade held in Monterey California in June. Cheryl had to attend meetings held by National for the Zone Representatives. I volunteered to help Ron Gordon with the concours. I was also recruited to help with the Zone 2 party. While there we enjoyed two tours, one to the Canepa museum and one to Big Sur. We also attended the Welcome party which was held at Monterey’s Fisherman’s wharf. But one of the best events we attended was the Concours banquet. At this banquet they give out the awards for the cars judged best in show. After the awards are presented and the speakers are finished the door prizes are given out. Some of the prizes this year included Porsche color coordinated luggage and an IPad. They would call the names out and as usual you must be present to win! When they called the grand prize winner it sounded familiar but no one was approaching the podium. We then realized they had called Cheryl’s name but we were both so shocked it went right over our heads. It was still surreal even after she brought the grand prize back to the table. The grand prize was a two day Porsche Sports Driving School experience which is held at the Barber Motorsports park in Birmingham Alabama. After the party was over and we had returned to our room, Cheryl immediately went on line to start checking out possible dates for me to attend the school. Rather than use the prize herself, she looked at me and said happy 60th! My birthday was only 30 days after parade and a milestone year for me. The weekends obviously book first, and the soonest date she could find for me to attend was the end of October. Once the school date was locked down, she immediately booked the airfare and hotel. Porsche has an agreement with Rossbridge Renaissance hotel located just minutes from Barber Motorsports Park. Their Renaissance hotel shuttle picks you up at the airport and also shuttles you to and from the track daily for your motorsport driving experience. The shuttle picked us up and had us at the track by 7:45am. They served us breakfast daily before our classroom session. The day began with our chief instructor giving us a 30 minute briefing on driving basics to use in the car, in addition to techniques used in car control. There were 30 people in the class, which included some spouses of the students who had come just to observe. After the classroom session they broke us into 6 groups and lead us to our shuttle for the track. The groups consisted of 5 to 6 people. My first workstation was the skid pad. The skid pad was comprised of a one acre paved surface that was kept wet by a sprinkler system. To me this was the hardest exer15 cise. Our car for this exercise was a 991 with PDK and the PSM was turned off. We

Porsche Sports Driving School Expe

Concours Grand Prize W were instructed to take the car fast enough that over steer would bring the front end around and you would spin .The test was to see how to control the car once the rear end has lost traction. The magic happened at about 18 mph. My group consisted of 5 people which gave us around 6 minutes of skid pad time. This is an exercise that you could spend all day practicing, but unfortunately we were allotted on 30 minutes at each station. The next exercise was the autocross station which consisted of cones laid out every 10 feet. We used a Cayman S with PDK and ceramic brakes and had 3 times to run the course. The first run was with the instructor and then we were on our own. The final station before heading to the track was accident avoidance, where we had a chance to use two different cars; a Boxster with PDK and A 991 with a manual transmission. We practiced 3 exercises and the headed to the track. Track time consisted of driving a car following the instructor in the lead car. All the cars had radios so the instructor could communicate with us while we were on the track. The instructors were in Turbo S 991s and my first time out I drove a Turbo Panamera. Track sessions lasted between 20 and 25 minutes, the other cars that I used were a Carrera with PDK and manual and a Boxster GTS with PDK. Only one set of Carreras had a manual transmission. The instructors did a great job of showing the proper line and giving good feedback while driving 70 plus mph and looking in the rear view mirror watching our line on the cars that were following. Barber Motorsport is a beautiful track with challenging elevation changes, which were much easier to learn when doing follow the leader with the instructor using the best line. We were treated to lunch at the Museum that lasted one hour followed by more track time with a new instructor in a different car. The track day ended at 4:30, but the fun continued with a dinner that night hosted by Porsche at the Rossbridge hotel. We were

strategically seated in groups of 6 – 8 with one instructor per table. I sat with two couples, both of which the men were taking the school while the spouses were there to observe. Again the cars were the common denominator, so meeting and talking to the couples with a mutual passion for Porsche was the best part. People came from all over to attend the Barber Motor Sports Driving School. Some came from as far as Sao Paulo Brazil and Costa Rico to California and Texas. Ironically, including me there were 4 people from Zone 2 including Potomac Region, Chesapeake Region and Central PA region. Day two was a continuation of the previous exercises, with the skid pad configuration including large figure 8’s, during which we were timed for the fastest time. It had rained the night before, just to make it a little slicker. Exercise 2 of the day was a timed fasted lap on the Autocross course. Station three was used to practice heel toe downshifts; I need a lot of practice on that one! Wrapping up the morning was more track time. The instructors would pair us up with comparable drivers and take us out for more follow the leader. After lunch three groups were put in Cayenne’s and taken on an off-road excursion. Less than one percent of Cayenne drivers will ever drive their cars off-road but the Cayenne is an incredible off roader. After the off-road excursion we went back to the track for another exercise they had set up which was doing launches with a turbo S. We were doing 0 to 60 and then braking; it was easy to hit one G on accelerating and stopping. We finished up the day on the track about 3:45pm at which time we were taken back to the classroom and given certificates, and then heard closing comments by the lead instructor. The day concluded by walking to the Museum to look at some of the incredible bikes and cars. Barber Museum has the largest collection of Motorcycles in the world and one could easily spend all day in 16 the Museum. The layout and displays are phe-

Finally, our shuttle took us back to the Hotel and I finished my evening by enjoying a great dinner with one of the couples from California. My two days at Barber’s Porsche Motor Sport driving school was an incredible experience for me and I feel fortunate to have been able to attend. The school is well organized with first class instructors and the cars are great. This was the first time I have driven new cars at speed on a track. Experiencing this I now realize how easy it is to drive the new cars verses my track car which currently is a 1983 911SC.
