he Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America serves it’s club members and hosts activities within the Baltimore, Annapolis and surrounding geographic area, including Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The general objectives of PCACHS are, as indicated in the by laws: Promote the highest standards of courtesy and safety on the roads. Promote the enjoyment and sharing of goodwill and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche vehicle and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership. Promote the maintenance of the highest standards of operation and performance of the marquee by sharing and exchanging technical and mechanical information. Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relations with Porsche AG, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), Porsche dealers, and other independent service sources to the end the marquee shall proper and continue to enjoy its unique leadership and position in sports car annals. Promote the interchange of ideas and suggestions with other PCA Regions throughout North America and the world, and in such corporation as may be desirable. Establish such mutually corporative relationships with other car clubs as may be desirable. Establish a community service initiative with the goal of engaging members to participate in activities that benefit the community through fundraising or volunteering of time.

Five years ago, thanks to Kara and Gary Martinez, our region began partnering with Giving Back Linda’s Legacy. This year our membership supplied the funding to purchase 625 backpacks for the local under-privileged and homeless children, women and men. Pete O’Neil and our Allen Gunzelman initiated the Chesapeake Region’s involvement, from there it was determined that we needed a common area large

PCA Zone 2 consists of 10 Regions in the Mid-Atlantic area, they include: Blue Ridge, Central, Chesapeake, Delaware, First Settlers, Keystone, Pocono, 5 Potomac, Riesentoter, and

from our president Shenandoah. The combined membership total for Zone 2 is over 10,000 members. The Chesapeake region alone has 50 events annually and the Potomac region, as the second largest Region in PCA, annually holds over 100 events. As a PCA club member you may attend events that are held in Zone 2 and any other Zone or Region.
For the past 3 years my wife Cheryl has been the Zone 2 representative. As part of her position, she attends at least one event per Region annually. When possible she’ll attend more and usually the Region that doesn’t see her as often is Chesapeake. I’m very fortunate in that I attend the events with her where we have seen some incredible cars. But this club is truly about the people that make up the membership, where we have made great friends in all 10 Regions. Our club members come from all walks of life who volunteer countless hours to arrange and organize venues. If you haven’t attended events, then you missing out on one of the greatest benefits of your PCA membership. Please check our website calendar to see what happenings you may be interested in attending. We’d love to see you.
Our next event (which as usual is already sold out) is our annual After Holiday Party. This year we’ve changed venues and are heading back to Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Maryland. If you’ve never attended the highlight of the evening is the “Bob and Manny Show” who emcee the infamous Yankee Swap where each couple brings a “Porsche” related gift, and you go home with one as well. However the fun happens in between where you should be careful to not become too attached to your gift be- Peace, cause if it’s that great of an item it’s sure to be stolen from you before you have a chance to really enjoy it.

from the historian History Channel PCA-Style A monthly feature depicting some highlights from pasts, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago (For January 2017 PATTER) By Bob Rassa, Club Historian
40 years ago in 1977 we had new officers taking hold of the club, with Ted Goodwin (Westinghouse employee) as President, Carl Maio as Vice-President, Sheila McHenry as Treasurer, and Joanne Shap as Secretary. Ab Tiedemann was the Patter editor, and Jack & Joan Thomas were doing production & graphics and Bill Morgenstern was doing photography and more graphics. Sheila was the wife of Bill McHenry (72 911S as I recall, white), a solid autocrosser who also happened to own the Crown gasoline station on the east side of York Rd just south of Padonia Rd (now a Gulf station), as well as the franchises for both of the gas stations at the rest stops on I-95 (Maryland House and Chesapeake House). No, we didn’t get PCA discounts from his stations but we sure learned about the vagaries of the service station business. Crown gasoline is still around but Bill’s old station is now a different brand. Bill Morgenstern was a solid 914 owner and supporter and taught us all about the little idiosyncrasies of that VW-Porsche joint development. Did you know that the 914 was intended to be sold as a “VW-Porsche” when initially developed? Your historian was doing all the PANORAMA new model road tests back then and got his hands on one of the very first preproduction models brought into the US for press testing – 1 of 12 total - and it had the “VW-Porsche” script on the rear panel. We were still holding our monthly meetings at Peerce’s Plantation Restaurant at Loch Raven Reservoir, which was a far cry from the Deutshes Haus Restaurant (Mt. Royal Avenue) basement where the club met in the mid-1960’s, and the January meeting featured Richard Reeve of Ziebart who would talk about their patented rustproofing process. All cars rusted out back then except those raised in the desert and rustproofing became a staple treatment to preserve chassis and rockers. In the For Sale section, member Rob Kline was selling his ’65 C coupe with 1600 engine, Koni shocks, Michelin XaS tyres, and factory shop manual for the princely sum of $4500. Carl and Sherry Maio reported on their recent 8500-mile, 23-state tour of the west in their ’75 911S Targa, which unfortunately began to misfire seriously at mile 426 of the trip from west to east, causing the Maios to shelf their TripTik (remember those??) and instead use their listing of Porsche dealerships for routing. A PCACHS ski trip to Elk Mountain in central PA was planned for late February, at a cost of $47.34 per person which included 2 night’s lodging at the Holiday Inn Scranton, breakfast for 2 days, Saturday dinner, AND lift tickets for Saturday and Sunday. And we had advertisements from 40 West Porsche + Audi, Towson Valley Motors (Porsche, Audi, Mercedes), Ziebart, and some tire place in Towson called Interstate Tire that offered Michelin XaS tyres, size 165HR15 for $47.64. The super-sticky XWX in 185/70VR15 went for a whopping $88.00. Oh, and it cost 13 cents to mail the 12-page tome.

Days earlier, members of the region had also donated $11,525 to Linda’s Legacy for the purchase of essential winter items for the homeless in Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Anne Arundel County. On the morning of Dec. 11, club members packed those essential sweatshirts, thermal underwear, socks, gloves and hats into 461 backpacks, which were to be distributed on Christmas Eve. (NOTE: A week after the gathering at Porsche of Towson, PCA’s Chesapeake Region made a lastminute donation of an additional $3,750 to Linda’s Legacy for the purchase of 150 more
backpacks. Other late donations from members eventually raised the region’s grand total to $15,625, enough for 625 backpacks of winter essentials for the homeless.) After the packing of the backpacks was completed on Dec. 11, short and inspiring speeches were given by Kindertime Toy Drive founder Pete O’Neal, Linda’s Legacy Executive Director Jeanette Middleton-Sudano, and PCA-CHS President Claude Taylor. Then about 40 PCA-CHS members in about two dozen cars went on a 25-mile driving tour through

some of the area's wonderful back roads, with the ABC2/WMAR-TV station in Towson as the destination. This driving tour was the Chesapeake Region’s 11th in 2016.
Members unloaded the toys at the TV station, headquarters of the overall Kindertime Toy Drive. Some of them then joined a guided tour of the station, conducted by WMAR's Pete O'Neal himself. Afterward, many of the members proceeded to the
