Overview of Mission Team

Our mission team exists because healthcare is a constantly growing industry that people will always need access to especially as the population grows, new illnesses arise, and the average lifespan increases. We aim to make an impact through advocacy, education, volunteering, and collaborations.

About 4-3-2-1 Activities

As we start transitioning back to in-person, we have worked to host both virtual and in-person opportunities. Through these opportunities, our team was able to learn more about access to healthcare not only in the United States, but throughout the world.

Learning

As a team we decided that learning and educating our-selves on topics pertaining to access to healthcare would be through Online resources that we could watch together and then discuss it. The first learning activity that we did was a TedTalk called Living on One Dollar a Day which was about a young group of men living in Guatemala for two months on one dollar a day to understand how poor families budget their money to live and feed their families. Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, the main leads on this trip, were able to connect with the local families and get an in depth understanding of how these families financed their lives. While learning about this story, we discussed how saving for healthcare is not always an option because when in hard financial situations, eating and having a roof over your head is more important. We discussed the privilege of how some of us have savings for medical issues as well as insurance that cuts the cost of healthcare. Another way our team took on learning was by doing our own research and coming together to discuss what we had learned. By finding topics that pertain to access to healthcare and then discussing them with passion with one another everyone’s knowledge is expanded and the eagerness to make a significant contribution to change the issue grows.

Networking

3-2-1 Night Hosted once in the fall and once in the spring, 3-2-1- Night was an opportunity for students to connect with others through civil-military, service, and culture workshops. In the fall, students got to watch Dunkirk and write a reflection of their thoughts and opinions on it, create holiday cards for those in the AZ National Guards, and study with fellow peers. For spring, students were able to read an article about personalized healthcare for troops and have a conversation about the credibility of the article and cross-sector collaboration within holistic healthcare in the military, make cards for children at St. Jude’s hospital, and network with fellow peers through the discussion of academics, internships, interviews, etc.

Fall 2021:

Spring 2022:

Panel with Research Specialist Kate De La Rosa Kate De La Rosa is a current research specialist for the Global Center for Applied Health Research (GCAHR) at ASU. She graduated from ASU with a degree in Public Service and Public Policy in 2020. In the panel, she discussed her role in a study regarding COVID-19 Health Disparities in low-income and vulnerable communities, ranging from data collection to community health workers to building positive relations with the Hispanic and Native communities at or near the U.S.-Mexico Border. Throughout her presentation, we would ask a variety of questions, such as how the study is related to access to healthcare, strategies for data collection, how to better help asylum seekers, etc.

Service

Project C.U.R.E. In Spring 2022, Mission Team 13 gathered to pack and organize medical supplies for various countries in need with Project C.U.R.E. in the Tempe location. This organization distributes medical supplies and equipment to more than 135 countries in need. There are many locations around the globe that lack sufficient medical supplies and equipment as a result of war, poverty, and shortages. Our time at Project C.U.R.E. allowed us to aid in packing medical supplies to Ukraine at a time of crisis.

Cards for Service Our mission team hosted two 3-in-1 events that allowed us and other NGSC members to create cards for service credits. The fall event focused on creating holiday cards for the AZ National Guards, while the fall created cards for St. Jude’s pediatric patients. Service is about giving back to our community. Mission team 13 gives back to the community by gathering NGSC members to show support for both military personnel and pediatric patients.

Advocacy

For this year’s advocacy efforts, Mission Team 13 focused on creating flyers that inform the public on topics surrounding access to healthcare. Seeing as how healthcare access is something that affects several on a global scale, we did not limit ourselves to just the state of Arizona. The flyers were then posted in the span of a week, on the Mission Team 13 Instagram page (ngsc_mt13), to educate the public on what is going on in the world of healthcare. The focus for the flyers was that they be informative, creatively illustrated, and easy to digest. The topics addressed ranged from insurance coverage, rural health access, racial disparities in health care, as well as the opioid crisis. Attached below are some photos of the flyers that were posted.

Conclusion This year Mission Team 13 has done a lot to be involved with access to healthcare. From learning more about the healthcare system and where the problems with access originate, to volunteering with Project Cure in hopes to help bridge this gap. Over the last year healthcare has been even more relevant, with the COVID-19 pandemic still putting a strain on the system to the political problems within Afghanistan and Ukraine. Project Cure works to provide resources for everyone, and we enjoyed working with them to begin working towards a world with more access to needed medical equipment. Our Mission Team has also strived to inform others on the issues within the healthcare system, and how we can all be educated and help in solving these problems.
