Hello,

work experience.

My name is Michael Nugent. I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am interested in urban revival and small scale, thoughtful design interventions operating in a larger network to stimulate the greater urban environment. I consider architecture to be a means for inciting greater social, cultural and spacial changes while addressing the problems that contemporary cities face. I am seeking a challenging position in a design office and passionate practitioners to learn from.

SPF: architects Los Angeles, CA. January - April 2015 iLeads Charter School uses a new case study, peer to peer learning model to teach students from kinder-

garden through high school. SPF:a was contracted to develop a master plan for the outlet mall the school was using as a campus and renovations for the buildings’ interior. I explored solutions for creating standardized, cost effective but flexible furniture options to allow easy annual reconfiguration of the school.

Nightingale was a personal, high-end residence in Beverly Hills. My role was construction of the final presentation model, material and representational exploration for the model, ordering metal etchings for the facade, and assisted in full-scale facade mock-ups. ArchFOC Waterloo, ON, October 2014-October 2015 Architecture Federation Orientation Committee Co-Chairperson. My colleague and I have been responsible for organizing the entire orientation experience for the incoming class of 2015, culminating in a six day, fully sanctioned orientation week to introduce the new students to the University of Waterloo, the School of Architecture and the town of Cambridge Ontario. This includes full event planning, budgeting, volunteer organization, sponsorship, memorabilia, and social media.

BRIDGE Undergrad Director January 2015 - Present Bridge is a student web magazine and forum for student work, architectural interest and community showcases. The Bridge Center for Architecture and Design is a pop-up exhibition space within downtown Cambridge. I am heavily involved in organizing community events, community outreach between Cambridge and the School of Architecture, and renovations and sponsorship for the space. I also write an article series entitled “because why not.” which explores non-traditional architecture and its relevance to social inhabitation amongst the general public. In “Architecture for the Other 99%” I interviewed 99 random people on the streets of Los Angeles to discover their opinions on architecture and the disconnect between the general population and many architectural practices.

WASA Vice President External May 2015 - Present I am responsible for organizing external events within the school and community and building relationships with other faculties.

F_RMlab: Planeterrareum (Project ‘Dome-Dome’) May 2014 - December 2014 F_RMlab is a student initiative in digital design and application. The Planeterrareum project was a 8m geodesic dome that supported sailcloth screens. Aerial drone footage of the city was then projected from five projectors to create a 360 degree view down on the city. The project was followed by a full publication of the process, development and event. My involvement was prominently in manufacturing of the dome’s 36 joints, construction of the dome itself, event logistics and drawings for the publication.

Dale Carnegie Assistant Coach April - June 2014 & April - June 2013 After completing the Dale Carnegie Course, I returned as an assistant coach in order to reinforce the skills I learned along with helping others to develop their own interpersonal, relationship development and leadership skills. My role was to assist facilitation of the class, lead warm ups and exercises, and provide sample reports for the upcoming classes.

when to ask questions and take direction, as well as being able to explore other options and provide alternative solutions. Michael has a very well rounded set of skills from digital to analog but what I found sets him apart at this stage in his development is his character and drive to bring success to all the projects he works on. I highly believe Michael will be a great asset to any firm willing to let him be of their team and I wish him the best of luck. May 12,part 2015 Sincerely. To whom it may concern: Michael Lindell It is my absolute pleasure to write a recommendation for Michael Nugent, who was under my direct supervision for numerous projects as an intern at SPF:a As an intern Michael quickly gained respect from the entire office as someone who is extremely capable, working independently or as a part of a team. He was willing to accept any role that was asked to be filled with a sense of confidence, pride and thoughtfulness. I found Michael knew when to ask questions and take direction, as well as being able to explore other options and provide alternative solutions. To Whom It May Concern: Michael Nugent is one of the most ambitious young men I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the last 4 years. One thing that indicated his ambition was taking the Dale Carnegie course when he was still in high school. He then came back twice to volunteer his time to continue to grow as well as to help new participants get the most from the program. I also know that he is unique in how he takes leadership among his peers to lead innovative non-core school focus projects. I find this extremely impressive! Michael also has a mature understanding of the importance of relationships. He knows that people are his greatest resource and he nurtures his network already when he hasn’t even finished his undergraduate studies yet. He knows how to keep his doors open; he sees the importance of it, and with people who may seem frustrating at times Michael is able to continue to keep those relationships strong. He also knows how to motivate others through his understanding of their motivations. I heartily recommend Michael as a leader in his current role as a student and know he will lead strongly in his career path in the future. He is a wonderful young person. planetterraeum.

The Planetterraeum was a student project to create a pavilion for Toronto’s Nuit Blanche with the simple idea of “when you look up, you see down.” The pavilion consisted of an 8m geodesic dome superstructure, nicknamed “DomeDome”, that supported sailcloth screens. Aerial drone footage of the city was then projected from five projectors to create a 360 degree view down on the city. The project was followed by a full publication of the process, development and event.

shellter.

Shellter is a modular, prefabricated, self-contained school designed for remote villages in the high arctic. The school provides facilities for approximately 30 students across all grades, with smaller instructional spaces surrounding a central working space. The school is designed to be self-sufficient during days of extreme daylight. As snow drifts piles against the building it provides additional thermal insulation and screening from the wind. Solar panels on the roof collect power for 360 degrees due to the extreme latitude, heating the space and converting snow into drinking water.

wetland parks.

The proposed wetland park system is a natural filtration system and park system north of Eglinton Avenue in Toronto’s Don Valley. The project looked at creating a series of interventions to improve water quality in the Don Valley and providing new ecosystems. These interventions where then tailored to become the basis of a park in a hypothetical future based on an extrapolated development curve in Toronto. The three bordering neighborhoods, varying from town homes to mid and high rise condos were exaggerated to contrasting zones of high density/ low income and low density/ high income single family homes.
