COLFAX MEADOWS

The area known as Colfax Meadows was subdivided by the Lankershim Ranch Land & Water Company. The original Colfax Meadows is from Colfax Avenue to Beck Avenue – Chiquita Street, Dilling Street, Kelsey Street and Troost Avenue was subdivided into approximately 15,000 square feet residential lots. The subdivision map, of the entire Lankershim Ranch, can be viewed in the map room of the San Fernando Mission.

The photo above shows the original real estate office for Colfax Meadows where Kelsey Street and Colfax Avenue intersected before the 1938 flood. Colfax Meadows was greatly affected by the 100 Year Flood in 1938. The Colfax Avenue Bridge was washed away and several large parts of properties along Kelsey Street were washed away.

The Federal Government ordered the channeling of the Los Angeles River beginning in 1939 and the Kelsey channel was completed in 1942.The Colfax Avenue Bridge was not replaced until 1956 by a temporary bridge named the ‘Singing Bridge’ because of its open grid expanse. The Colfax Meadows neighborhood and Republic Pictures were bothered by noise from that bridge, so much so, that the open grid was filled with concrete.

Many articles have been written about Colfax Meadows. The neighborhood residents have long enjoyed the rural atmosphere. In 1988, long term neighbors requested the zone change to RE11-1, prohibiting the lots from subdividing under 11,000 square feet, to preserve the larger lots in the original Colfax Meadows area, the only flat area in Studio City with so many large residential lots. Today, Colfax Meadows is the only flat lands with a zone larger than R1-1, 5,000 square foot minimum lot size.

The San Fernando Valley, newly water enriched, embarked on developing its own cachet in the 1920s. The homes were not as imposing – manageable Cliff May-style ranches and mini Tudor manses – but the aspirations were the same. Colfax Meadows and other neighborhoods lured builders with the promise of a life less common.

COLOR MY WORLD

A creative power couple brings their passion for the carefree Caribbean lifestyle to their Studio City home.

From the outside, Robert Deutschman and Sybile Kohn-Deutschman’s ranch home looks like a lot of houses in the Colfax Meadows neighborhood. The pea green structure is well tended and full of charm. But once the front door opens, it’s anything but typical. Visitors are met with a vibrant palette of burnt oranges and golden yellows. On the walls there are spectacular framed photos of Cuba, Thailand and the Caribbean. Also on the property: an eclectic assortment of Buddha artifacts, three energetic dogs and the coolest couple north of Mulholland Drive.

Rob, a fashion photographer and commercial director, and Sybile, a stylist and designer, met 15 years ago on a photo shoot. They got engaged two years later on the deck of an over-the-water suite in Tahiti, married soon thereafter and have been working together ever since. With their 11-year-old son, Kian, in tow, they travel the world shooting big-time campaigns for clients like Pottery Barn, Crocs and Hyatt Hotel’s luxury boutique brand, Andaz.

Photo spreads that don’t take them abroad, including Kylie and Kendall Jenner’s Steve Madden shoe campaign and Eva Mendez’s Interview magazine layout, are often shot here at the couple’s home, which easily doubles as a lush resort in Mexico or Tahiti. The property includes a 2,500-square-foot main house and an equal size guesthouse that serves as their offices. The two are separated by a rectangular travertine-tiled pool, covered patio, two outdoor fireplaces, custom teak cabinetry made by Rob and walls saturated in cheerful sunrise shades. Chill-out lounge music and Nag Champa incense complete the ambiance.

“We wanted to make our home feel like a resort so that when we got home from traveling around the world for work, we didn’t feel like we had to go anywhere else,” says Rob.

Inspiration for the Deutschman’s décor aesthetic is their love of the easygoing lifestyle and lively colors of the Caribbean. Sybile, whose parents are both French, was raised in Tahiti, St. Bart’s and the Dominican Republic. Rob fell in love with the region’s turquoise water and white sand beaches while shooting numerous swimwear ads on the islands.

The most striking Caribbean influence is the bold use of color inside and outside the home, including purple with black accents in

As he awaits the titanic sale of his oceanfront home in Malibu, Leonardo DiCaprio wrapped up a deal for another of his Los Angeles-area properties. The box office star has sold a quaint residence in Studio City for about $2.237 million.

Tucked behind a picket fence in the Colfax Meadows area, the 1930s ranch-style house has a brick walkway that leads to a covered porch and a red-hued front door.

In addition to a living room with a fireplace, there’s a dining room, four bedrooms and 2.75 bathrooms in the 3,407 square feet of living space. The country-style kitchen is light and bright with white cabinetry, butcher block countertops and herringbone wood floors.

Rows of French doors extend the living space outside, where there is a trellis-topped patio and a swimming pool. Lawns, mature trees and a detached two-car garage fill out grounds of more than a third of an acre.

The property had been listed for sale at $2.395 million, records show. It previously changed hands two years ago for $2.05 million.

DiCaprio, 42, won an Academy Award last year for his leading role in “The Revenant.” Prior to that, he garnered Oscar nominations for his work in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993), “The Aviator” (2004), “Blood Diamond” (2005) and “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013).

Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner has paid $2.428 million for a newly built home in Studio City’s Colfax Meadows neighborhood.

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, who inked a new four-year, $64-million contract with the team in December, has bought a home in Studio City for $2.428 million.

Newly built last year in the Colfax Meadows neighborhood, the East Coast-inspired two-story features an oversized island in the kitchen, a wine closet beneath the stairs and crisp white wainscoting throughout. A mud room sits just beyond the front door.

Other living spaces include formal living and dining rooms topped with coffered ceilings, an office, five bedrooms and 4.75 bathrooms. The master suite has a fireplace and a private terrace overlooking the front yard.

Outside, privacy hedges surround a swimming pool with a spa and waterfall feature. A cabana with a barbecue/bar and a changing room sits nearby.

The property had been listed for $2.449 million at the time of the sale, records show.

Turner, 32, hit .275 with 27 homers and 90 RBIs for the Dodgers last season, his third with the team. The Southland native and Cal State Fullerton alum has previously played for the Orioles and Mets.

Onetime Robert Blake home is ready to cast a new owner in Studio City

“Mata Hari Ranch,” the former Studio City home of actor Robert Blake, is for sale at $2.995 million.

neal j leitereg

Robert Blake’s “Mata Hari Ranch,” the Studio City home he owned for about two decades, has come on the market for $2.995 million.

English actress Alexandra Kingston bought the property from Blake in 2002 and commissioned designer-to-the-stars Paul Hinckley to restore the main house. She sold the home a year later despite having never moved in, The Times previously reported.

Now up for sale again, the updated home in the Colfax Meadows neighborhood makes the most of indoor-outdoor living.

Sliding glass doors open from the main house to a large covered pavilion with a fireplace. A saline infinity-edge swimming pool, a wood-fired pizza oven, a waterfall spa and a Zen-style pond fill about a third of an acre of grounds. Bamboo hedges and mature trees provide a natural privacy screen.

The home has more than 5,000 square feet of living space with vaulted ceilings, exposed, a center-island kitchen, five bedrooms and 5.25 bathrooms.

Also on the property is a two-story guest house that holds a studio, office, gym and game room.
