Mid-Century Modern is an architectural, interior & product design form that generally describes post-war developments in modern design from roughly 1945 to 1965. Mid-Century architecture was a further development of Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles of organic architecture combined with many elements reflected in the International & Bauhaus movements.

Mid-Century architecture was a further development of Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles of organic architecture combined with many elements reflected in the International & Bauhaus movements.
Mid-Century Modernism, however, was much more organic in form & less formal than the International Style. Scandinavian designers & architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, democratic design & natural shapes. Like many of Wright’s designs, Mid-Century architecture was frequently employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America’s post-war suburbs. This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows & open floor plans with the intention of opening up interior spaces & bringing the outdoors in.

Many mid-century homes utilized then groundbreaking Post & Beam architectural design that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs with an emphasis placed specifically on targeting the needs of the average American family. Examples of residential Mid-Century Modern architecture are frequently referred to as the California Modern Style.

Spanish Colonial Revival is really a catalog of styles, unified by the use of arches, cour tyards, form as mass, plain wall surfaces, & tile roofs, all derived from the Mediterranean wor ld. Designer s were inspired by a number of sources: the adobe & colonial buildings of Monterey, California ; late forms of Moorish architecture; medieval Spanish & Italian church architecture ; Ultra-Baroque design of colonial Spain & Por tugal; r ural forms from Andalusia; Italian Romanesque & Renaissance revival elements; & southwest Hopi & Pueblo Indian adobes. This broad source base made it relatively easy to create a convincing harmony between the exterior image , interior space , decorative elements, & the building’s function . Eclectic as the Spanish revival was , the purity of single elements was often retained, such as an UltraBaroque entr y decoration . In some cases an entire style source , such as Andalusian, was vi r tually transplanted . This revival was a phenomenon which swept those regions of America with Hispanic pasts : California , New Mexico, southern Arizona, Florida , & Texas. In California this revival could be constr ued as a mature continuation of the Mission revival which had used Hispanic elements as mere dressing. Its popularity was heightened by the Spanish Colonial buildings in the 1915 San Diego Exposition. Fur ther impetus came from ingenious designer s who sought a wider source base for this “Spanish Renaissance , ” & a spontaneous public relations campaign that attracted a monied class. Architect.com

The California Ranch: Suburban Post War Dream Home
Though the earliest ranch style homes date to the 1930s in California & reflect a relaxed Western lifestyle, they didn't become popular until after World War II. As with all 20th century American architecture, the Ranch style is eclectic & individual houses may incorporate elements of any of its antecedents. Ranch style homes are gaining popularity for their ability to integrate Universal design and accessibility into its single-story floor plans, which is becoming extremely popular with boomers and seniors who want to "age in place". Gen-Xers, meanwhile, love the retro look and want a relaxed home for their young families. AntiqueHome.org

“A ranch house, because of its name alone, borrows friendliness, implicitly, informality, and gaiety from the men and women who, in the past, found those pleasures in ranchhouse living.” –Cliff May, Circa 1946 ~ Architect & Father of the California Ranch House
The ranch architectural style is an art form unique to America. The ranch house can be considered a subtype of modern-style architecture, which embraces open spaces and the connection between indoor & outdoor living. The art form was pioneered by California architect Cliff May, whose houses were often a single room deep so each room could open to the outside & benefit from sunshine & warm breezes. Ranch homes are synonymous with laid-back living, emphasizing the family-friendly backyard, usually connected to the kitchen or dining area via a sliding glass door & flat patio. One of the most fascinating aspects about ranch houses is the ethos underscoring their design elements. In essence, ranch living was about livability, flexibility and an unpretentious character. The simplicity, modernism and open spaces of ranch style homes addressed these three core values. GeeksOnHome.com
“Living in a ranch house would have connoted an ambivalence about Modernism: On one hand you've purchased a home that is on the cutting edge of domestic architecture of the period," stocked with all the modern conveniences. But the house also comes with associations of American values, and a suggestion that the best way to live is on the open landscape of America.” Author D.J. Waldie ~The Once and Future Ranch, LA Times.

Postmodern architecture seeks to focus on the needs and desires of the present generation in terms of comfort and design.
There is a sort of “anything goes” attitude associated with postmodern architecture, though its creations are not chaotic by any means. Architects espousing this movement like to add the unexpected touches to buildings that go against convention but still look appealing. For instance, a skyscraper built in the genre of postmodern architecture can sport classical columns to add to the overall beauty of the building. Colors, too, tend to lean toward the unexpected, while continuing to remain within an established color scheme. Aside from function and art, postmodern architecture also embraces a certain continuity within a structure. The “anything goes” mentality must still have a basic cohesive order. Quality is also essential. The theory behind many postmodern works is that if the product is functional and attractive, those who reside or work inside can have happier and more productive lives.

Postmodern architecture, a movement which actually dates back to the 1950′ s, continues to surprise and please. While the architecture so often features unexpected additions or color schemes, the goal is still to create a unifying theme throughout the structure. Architects work very hard to generate plans that prove aesthetically pleasing, highly functional, cohesive and sustainable

The Cape Cod Home
The Cape Cod house is an enduring American architectural tradition. This quintessential New England style is known for its steep roofli nes, dormers, cottage charm & symmetry. The traditional yet modest style originated in Colonial America in the early 1700s. Economical & practical, this residential style remains popular today.
Cape Cod homes first appeared on the New England coast in the early 18th century. The Cape Cod style evolved from the "hall and parlor" model brought to New England by British colonials. This model, which economized living space, exhibited two rectangular rooms on the lower level & usually a half story, or attic, for bed space. Using locally found materials built to withstand harsh New England weather, the hall & parlor style evolved into the Cape Cod style with its characteristic weathered shingles.
The term "Cape Cod style" was first coined in 1800 by Timothy Dwight, president of New York University, in his book “Travels in New England and New York."
The exterior of a Cape Cod is traditionally clad in wood shakes or clapboard shingles. A central front door often is flanked by pilasters. Shutters are traditional & were first used as protection from New England storms, though today's Cape Cod shutters are purely decorative. Double-hung, multi-paned windows are standard, with charming touches such as picket fences & window boxes often added.
Cape Cods are typically one to one-and-a-half-story homes. In the original Cape Cods, the first floor featured a center-hall floor plan with a parlor & dining room & a central fireplace to provide heat. In later Cape Cods, the chimneys were moved to one side of the house. Upstairs, modest bedrooms were tucked beneath the dormers under slanting roofs. The floors are typically hardwood.
Though its popularity never waned in New England, the Cape Cod style spread across America in the 1930s. By the 1940s, the post-World War II housing boom made the Cape Cod a staple in new suburban neighborhoods. The style was inexpensive, easy to build, and appealed to Americans' sense of tradition. The new Cape Cods maintained many of the architectural features of the originals, including a steep roof & dormers, but the interiors were updated & attached garages were added.

Modern architecture is the term used to describe the simplified, unornamented building styles of the late 19th and the 20th centuries. These building styles are also known by other labels, like International Style, Neue Sachlichkeit or New Objectivity, and Functionalism. They developed as a reaction to the design excesses of the Victorian and the Edwardian period.

The architects who designed in this style were mainly inspired by machine aesthetics. They determined the form of a building according to its functional requirements and the materials to be used. Simplified forms were preferred and all unnecessary details were banished.

Tuscan architecture is the traditional architecture of Tuscany, a region in central Italy. With simple, clean lines & design elements drawn from as long ago as the Roman Empire, Tuscan architecture is a rustic yet sophisticated style particularly suited to its original Mediterranean setting & increasingly used in other parts of the world.
Newer buildings in the Tuscan style continue to use a look of roughly dressed stone for exterior walls as well as patios and garden walls. Interior walls are plaster, with textured designs on the surface. Paint colors for the walls are neutral but accent colors are warm rich earth tones, yellows, reds and greens. Windows are arched & framed with full-size wooden shutters. Fireplaces are common & have stone hearths, often marble or travertine, & mantelpieces of either stone or rugged wood.
Tuscan architecture calls for high, vaulted, ceilings. These are either richly textured or paneled with wood. Floors are stone, often marble or travertine, terracotta tile, or terrazzo.
Exteriors in Tuscan architecture feature much the same array of building materials & continue the simple yet elegant decorative style. The Mediterranean climate calls for outside living areas, & patios, enclosed gardens, & fountains are common. Tile roof colors are in the same warm range of yellows, browns, reds, & greens seen in interior rooms.
Modern buildings can have the style & appeal of Tuscan architecture. Colors, textures on walls and ceiling, arched wood-framed windows, and tile roofs can all help recreate the look of a Tuscan home.

Robert Koch Woolf, the Los Angeles decorator who with his partner, the architect John Elgin Woolf, created a new style of luxury in Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s & established a new vocabulary for glamorous movie-star living. They synthesized 19th-century French, Greek Revival and Modernist touches into a heady mixture that has since been christened Hollywood Regency, which foreshadowed aspects of postmodernism. They designed houses for, among others, George Cukor, John Wayne, David O. Selznick and Barbara Hutton.

Hollywood Regency refers to an over-the-top glamorous yet elegant style which uses an eclectic mix of opulent design elements In America, regency revival was popularized by Hollywood in the 1930s during what is now called the “Golden Age.” The style is now associated with lavish Art Deco film sets, glamorous movie stars such as Garbo & Harlow & lush black & white films. In the late ’30s & ’40s, architects & designers Billy Haines, Billy Baldwin & Dorothy Draper brought the Regency style out of Hollywood into the mainstream. In the ensuing decades, Haines especially had a crucial role in the popularization of Hollywood Regency & his unique combination of Neo-classical styles with modernist elements.
