The Ponte Assereto Cultural Centre forms part of the La Pianificazione per il Futuro masterplan, situated on the Ponte Assereto, one of Genoa's numerous peninsulas, on the west side of Port of Genoa. The peninsula is currently used as a lay down area for shipping containers and as a landing stage for a ferry operator. This area was chosen for the masterplan location as it was felt to be the next suitable area following on from the Porto Antico and proposed Ponte Parodi regeneration schemes in order to complete the 'loop' around the Port. The masterplan proposes a zone of medium height, mixed-use space located in the heart of an industrial area. Providing living and retail space, commercial and cultural amenities alongside expansive public areas which will allow the peninsula to become an attractive place to live and work. The site’s current location is an isolated one. Surrounded by the port to the north, east and south whilst to the west sits a section of Genoa’s vast and complex infrastructure network. The masterplan connects into this existing urban fabric through a series of new public walkways, connecting into the San Benigno Business District to the west, the Civic area to the north and the Lanterna to the south. The masterplan also connects into Renzo Piano’s Porto Antico regeneration scheme from 1992 located over the ports mouth via a proposed new swing bridge, forming a new iconic gateway into the Port of Genoa.

The plinth on which the Ponte Assereto Cultural Centre sits on top of measures a total of 8946 m². The total building footprint is 4466m². The scheme is located at the end of the peninsula and is the prime location for a landmark Cultural Building. Taking precedent from the Opera Houses in Sydney and Oslo, the facilities are aimed at the majority and include an adaptable 752 seat theatre space with fly tower, multi-functional room, outdoor projection and performance areas, a restaurant/café, retail outlets and the cities only 360° panoramic roof terrace, all of which are sat on top of a 6m high plinth, as a result of the existing ground conditions, to promote the building.

The architecture of the building is derived from a regular structural grid of 7.5m which provides a series of orthogonal, linear spaces which exceed the minimum requirements of the users to create a functional, modern building at the entrance to a thriving, active port. The total building floor area is 22,315.6 m².

Existing Site, Constraints and Opportunities

The existing site (shown above) has many pros and cons: Pros: A flat urban strip of land. Gateway to the port. Easily connectable to the city with intervention. Blank canvas. Cons: Isolated site surrounded on all sides by water and a heavy infrastructure network. Building on man-made reclaimed land. Blank canvas with no context.
