ABOUT THE COVER

“You need to understand how human beings bring together their brains and enable their ideas to combine and recombine, to meet and, indeed to mate. -British author Matt Ridley during his talk on TED.com We all auspiciously endeavour to build Buhangin District, our greatest achievements. The cover conveys a message on how a single designer undergoes design process and later on collaborates with other designer to achieve a unified design. Having ideas and be able to put them together wasn’t simple at all. It started with a single point then developed to a linear and later on advanced to more intricate elements. However, these produced ideas must work with other ideas. Designers collaborate, displays a system based on what we called teamwork in order to produce an integrated whole design. The cover has the most desirable approach. No single designer was left out, no rivalry, each and every one consider being relevant and worthy.

FOREWORD E

nvisage is a project proposal for underdeveloped cities which are strategic and suitable for Urban Design Development. It has been a practice of educators of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Architecture and Fine Arts (PUP-CAFA) Department of Architecture to push the students of the said college to go beyond their limits. Arch. En.P. Anthony S. Yan has opened a window of opportunity for the students of BS Architecture 4-1 (A.Y. 2013-2014) for this design development proposal for Davao City. Under the subject Planning 2: Urban Design, the class sought for an appropriate site for the said development. Through schemes and investigation, the authors have come up with a location that is most suitable for the design development project, thus having the site at Davao City. Along with these, they have extensive researches on the factors affecting/ showing the present condition of the city. The authors had meetings on a weekly basis with Arch./ En.P. Yan, being their professor and/or adviser in the said subject. The professor checks all developments and accomplishments done by the students on every meeting. The authors’ envision a viable development to the City of Davao. It is their goal to come up with a modern yet liveable development. Sustainability is the key concept in designing the site. The authors together and their adviser together with the PUP- CAFA look forward for the enactment of the design development proposal. The BS Architecture 4-1 exerted much effort and resources in order for this design development proposal be possible. Though time and manpower have been very critical for the authors to finish this project, supreme knowledge that has been shared by the adviser to the students shall never be paid by any price. The skills and techniques learned by the authors in the design process is priceless and the bonding experiences and 24- hour chatting as well. It has been a great honor to have been given this chance to design such large site. It shall be well appreciated if the design development proposal will come to life someday.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

I

t is with distinct pleasure to know that our Planning Class of 4th Year Architecture students in the PUP College of Architecture and Fine Arts embarked on this kind of research that will not only be just an academic requirement but moreso, something that would benefit the public directly.

Arch. Ted Villamor G. Inocencio, FUAP MArch

“...will not only be just an academic requirement... Something that would benefit the public directly...”

The site considered being Davao City is one of the more exciting urban cities in Mindanao and the country as well. As such the government needs to continually update its physical needs as embodied in the existing Physical Framework Plan it has as of the present. Communal facilities must be upgraded in time according to felt needs and urban amenities must further be enhanced to fully cope with rapid urbanization. These things once realized as maybe guided in part by this study must surely have positive impact as it may improve more the quality of life in the city. In behalf of the college, we re one in evndorsing this activity and here’s wishing you success in your endeavor as we hope this research-study will find its way to the officials of Davao City and may it be worthy of their attention. Congratulations to the participants as well as to your research adviser/co-author, Archt. Anthony Yan for a worthy cause and here’s wishing you Godspeed!

“It will be the great symbol of what we can do as a Filipino to help and inspire others”

MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISER

W

e hope to inspire municipalities and cities towards a sustainable and prosperous growth. Gathering all studies, information, and also an overwhelming passion to dream and aspire to create a great development of any city here in the Philippines. But changes can often affect how we plan and develop our country, our regions, our cities, down to our barangays. This Studio aims to provide future developments that limitdamages to our environment and create a sustainable community and regions. Using effective urban planning, urban design, and architecture skills which the students had learned during the course of their studies, we can create new developments that can be helpful to the social, institutional, infrastructural, environmental, and economical aspects of a municipality or a country. The proposed Davao Urban Development will create a great avenue for potential economic growth that can be a precedent to their regions in the country. Tackling the needs of effective transportation that can contribute to the urban development, the class introduces the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as the spine of our linear development. Developments that cater all facets of lifestyle that a DavaeĹˆo and its tourists will be delighted to visit and get involved to. Aside from the BRT, most of the facilities and developments are geared up towards the (holistic

growth of Davao) needs from social, economic, infrastructure, environmental, up to institutional needsof Davao City. This is to create a walkable city and a development where the built and natural environments complement each other to satisfy the needs of its inhabitants. As we turn on the pages of the magazine, we will see different ideas that turns into superb drawings that were created through all the years of learning and hard work. These ideas were combined to create one urban fabric that is surrounded with built and natural environments that forms the recreational parks and other infrastructure. It will help to transform and uplift the Ilocano’s great pride towards urban growth. It is a great privilege to take part together with all the students who contributed to this masterpiece for Davao City. The students of Planning Class 2 AY 2013-2014had created different styles, developed critical thinking, and invested great amount of time and creativity in developing this project. It will be the great symbol of what we can do as a Filipino to help and inspire others.

We congratulate the great efforts made by the team and other contributing bodies in creating this masterpiece that will soon be a great foundation for more studies and developments. These works will be the epitome of success of all students and professors from the College of Architecture and Fine Arts of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The aim of the project is to provide a great magnitude of imagination to present future developments. Future developments that can be considered and implemented and even tap as reference point for other possible regions of growth. This magazine was developed by the Planning Class 3 AY 2012-1213 students to be a gift to the nation itself and also to the chosen community.

Arch./En.P. Anthony C. Yan 13

I

t suggests a Central Business District (CBD) be constructed due to Buhangin District’s adjacency to the airport. The development showcases a mixed use of land parcels that cater institutional, residential, commercial, industrial and even recreational zones. A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is one of the main features of the development, suggesting a world- class transportation system for better connections of the different portions of the development.

Envisage features green parks in the entire development to sustain a viable environment along with the busy lifestyle of the people nowadays. It is intended to be a haven where everyone may relax and socially interact. Envisage is a project proposal that cares for both environment and mankind.

E

nvisage is an urban design development proposal accomplished by College of Architecture and Fine Arts students of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines under class ARCH 4-1 (A.Y. 20132014). It is designed to create a whole new world to the largest city in Asia, Davao City (Buhangin District in particular).

Envisage is especially crafted and modified to meet the visions of the designers to the said city and to satisfy the prevailing issues in the site and further apply formulated architectural strategies in order to offer Davao City and its people a better environment to live in.

15

THE FIVE ASPEC T S O F U R B A N D E S I G N

U

rban design is the process of designing and shaping cities, towns and villages. Whereas architecture focuses on individual buildings, urban design address the larger scale of groups of buildings, of streets and public spaces, whole neighborhoods and districts, and entire cities, basically the shaping of masses and spaces (solids & voids) to make urban areas functional, attractive, and sustainable. Urban design demands a good understanding of a wide range of subjects from physical geography and social science. In order to create a good urban design five aspects of the site must be extensively investigated namely: Political, Social, Economic, Infrastructure and Social aspects. These are the five rooms of the existing environment of the site selected to which urban design shall be applied. Urban design is about making connections between people and places, movement and urban form, nature and the built fabric. Urban design draws together the many strands of place-making, environmental stewardship, social equity and economic viability into the creation of places with distinct beauty and identity. Urban design is derived from but transcends planning and transportation policy, architectural design, development economics, engineering and landscape. It draws these and other strands together creating a vision for an area and then deploying the resources and skills needed to bring the vision to life. Public spaces are frequently subject to overlapping management responsibilities of multiple public agencies or authorities and the interests of nearby property owners, as well as the requirements of multiple and sometimes competing users. The design, construction and management of public spaces therefore typically demands consultation and negotiation across a variety of spheres. Urban designers rarely have the degree of artistic liberty or control sometimes offered in design professions such as architecture. It also typically requires interdisciplinary input with balanced representation of multiple fields including engineering, ecology, local history, and transport planning.

ECONOMICAL ASPECT

D

avao is part of the East Asian Growth Area, a regional economic-cooperation initiative in Southeast Asia. Like the rest of the Philippines, Davao City has a market-oriented economic system, although prices are regulated in several sectors (particularly basic commodities) to protect consumers. As of 2010, agriculture accounted for roughly 48 percent of the city’s economy, industry for 16 percent and the commercial and service sectors for about 35 percent. In 2011, Davao City ranked 87th among the world’s fastest-growing cities by the City Mayors Foundation, based in London and Freiburg, Germany. According to the foundation, the city has a projected average annual growth of 2.53 percent over a 15-year period; Davao was the only Philippine city

16

to reach the top 100. Davao City’s growing econ omy can also be attributed to its stable power grid. Davao Light and Power Co., an Aboitiz company which is the third-largest electric utility in the country, serves the city’s needs. With Davao Light’s Bajada Power Plant and supply agreements with other generating plants, the city has fewer power interruptions compared to other parts of Mindanao during an island-wide power

shortage. Davao is a leading producer of mangoes, pomelos, bananas, coconut products, papayas and mangosteens. Durians are also a notable export; Davao has been nicknamed the “durian capital of the Philippines”. FINANCE AND SOCIAL SERVICES

D

avao City is considered the financial hub of Mindanao. One Network Bank, based in the city, is the largest rural bank in the Philippines in assets; most branches are in Mindanao (including 17 locations where it is the only financial-services provider). Government social-insurance agencies such as the Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System are also in Davao. ECONOMY

T

he economy of Metro Davao is one of the largest in the country and the most economically active in Mindanao. Davao City, its metropolitan center, is known as the Crown Jewel of Mindanao because it is the premier city, the financial and trade center. It also has the greatest economic activity, population, urban build-up and modern amenities in Mindanao, and is the single most important economy i n the island as well as the third most important urban center in the Philippines. T agum City, from being a predominantly agricultural area, has become Mindanao’s fastest-rising urban city due to its strategic location.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT

A

sprawling metropolis Davao city is the biggest city in the Philippines and one of the biggest in the world, having a total land area of 2, 443.61 sq.km. Hilly in the west part which is the Marilog district and slopes down to the southeastern shore. It is located approximately 588 statute miles southeast of Manila and 241 statute miles to Cebu City. Its highest point is Mt. Apo at 3412 meters (11, 194 ft) known as the “grandfather of Philippine Mountains”. The highest peak in the Philippines located at the city’s southwestern tip. The mountain and its surrounding vicinity, Mount Apo National Park was inaugurated by Pres. Manuel Quezon to protect the flora and fauna of the surrounding mountain range.Davao River, the city’s primary drainage channel, draining an area of over 1700 sq. km. which 160-kilometer of it begins in the town of San Fernando, Bukidnon.

Despite Davao City’s location in the Asian portion of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the city has suffered few earthquakes and most have been minor. Mount Apo is a potentially active volcano. The climate of Davao has a tropical rainforest, with little seasonal variation in temperature. Average monthly temperatures are always above 26 °C (78.8 °F) and average monthly precipitation is above 77 millimetres (3.03 in). This gives the city a tropical climate without a true dry season while there is significant rainfall in winter. Most precipitation occurs during the summer month. Global warming and its effects ranked first with regards to the Dabawenyos concern on environmental issues, followed by deforestation, city flooding, energy crisis and air pollution. Pollution of drinking water, followed by coastal degradation and loss of marine resources, pollution of rivers and water reservoirs, mining and its effects, urbanization and loss of open/free spaces & maintenance of the city’s fresh water supply are also main problems encountered by the people in Davao City

INFRASTRUCTURES

T Almost half of the total land area is classified as forest. Agriculture uses about 43% and remains the largest economic sector. Large plantations, producing bananas, pineapples, coffee and coconuts, comprise a large portion of the total land area. The city is home to 272 bird species, all located on Mount Apo and 111 of which are endemic to the area. The critically endangered Philippine Eagle, known as the monkey-eating eagle, the country’s national bird. Fruits such as mangosteen and durian (known as the “king of fruits”), grow abundantly on Mount Apo.

18

he basic infrastructure within the Davao City such as airport, seaports, roads, bridges, and telecommunications has sustained the economic growth in the last 10 years. Due to the City’s unprecedented growth, a demand for higher capacity infrastructures resulted to a number of modernization projects now on-going to meet the demands of the new millennium. There are numerous infrastructures of different category are found in Davao. These are the Economic Infrastructures, Energy infrastructures, Communication Infrastructures, Water Management Infrastructures, Solid Waste Management and Earth Monitoring & Measurement Networks Infrastructures, Government Infrastructures, Social and Cultural, Sports & Recreational Infrastructures

and the Transportation Infrastructures.

Like the rest of the Philippines, Davao City has a market-oriented economic system to protect consumers. The region is considered as a hub of financial services in Mindanao wherein Davao City is the financial center. It also plays an important role as the seat of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce in Mindanao and the Mindanao Business Council. One Network Bank is the largest rural bank in the Philippines in assets and most branches are in Mindanao including 17 locations where it is the only financial-services provider. Government social-insurance agencies such as the Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System are also in Davao. Some examples of economic infrastructure in Davao are Robina Corporation, Power plant, Legaspi Oil Company, Banks, Markets and other building or infrastructures that contribute to the economic progress of Davao City. ENERGY INFRASTUCTURES

GOVERNANCE INFRASTRUCTURE

A

ccording to Gigie Arcilla-Agtay of Sunstar local news, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) cited Davao City as one of the top performing local government units (LGUs) for 2010 based on the areas of good governance. Based on DILG, the Davao City ranks 5th place among the top performing cities in the highly urbanized and independent component cities category. It has an average score of 4.7410 in the DILG’s Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS). Some of infrastructures made for the improvement of the government in Davao are the Sidlakan Center which provides women victims of violence and their children a temporary shelter, medical, rehabilitation program and livelihood program, WOMYNET, an advisory center for rape, incest, child abuse and violence against women and the Ray of Hope Gawad Kalinga village which houses 100 women inmates. SOCIAL AND CULTURAL, SPORTS AND RECREATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURES

Under the agreement, the University of the Philippines is to make available, from its reservation, 20 hectares for this project and provide professional input in the operation of the sports complex. The city in turn will provide the funding for the infrastructure and the improvement of the access roads leading to the Complex. Another one is the Theme parks. Theme parks in the tradition of Disney and Enchanted Kingdom shall provide thousands of tourists which will be another alternative destination and itinerary when doing business or pleasure trip in the City or its nearby localities. Due to the absence of such establishments in the entire island, a pioneering venture in said industry is seen very feasible considering the more than 30-million market of Mindanao and the Visayas.

POLITICAL ASPECT

D

avao city is one of the political-oriented and diverse cities in the Philippines with having

rules, regulations and ordinance set, made and implemented uniquely for their people. That is the reason why it has been dubbed as the true capital of the Philippines for being the frontrunner of developments and also the standard of safety and

Building construction ordinances regarding of buildings constructions were also considered and had strong effort in using sustainable systems for economical and environmental efficiency. As of recent times, Davao city, with its sister provinces unite in making the city a better place for commerce, industrial and tourism spot through countless projects from ICT developments up to LRT proposal, progress is inevitable. Here are some list of projects and priorities of the political leaders in Davao: • Partnership with the National Housing Authority and Gawad Kalinga • Anti-jaywalking fences in the centre islands • Allocate funds to improve the drainage system to 9 projects • River flood protection and mitigation. Sustainable Urban Public Transport System The Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), MCC Capital Inc., a UK-based financial institution, and local government units in the Davao Region have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the proposed Davao Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the construction of a bridge in Samal. DAVAO City official’s political will and honest agenda of pushing development programs giving priority to economic growth, commercialization, tourism and infrastructure , strict regulation implementation, and environmental preservation made the city today a vibrant and one of the most developed and liveable city in the country.

PROJECT INTENT

E

nvisage is a proposed urban design development for Buhangin District, Davao City. It is intended for two main reasons namely: •To create a new living environment that is modern and / or contemporary yet viable and recreational dedicated not only to the present inhabitants of the city of Davao but to the future generations as well. It is designed to escalate people’s lives and their relationship with nature through architecture. •To promote urban design to underdeveloped portions of the country particularly those which are feasible and strategic. Furthermore, it is essential to apply architectural principles, theories and solutions to existing development issues within the site. Envisage is anticipated to come to life in the near future under the final judgment of the Local Government of Davao.

22

GOALS

E

nvisage aims to provide Davao City an urban design development proposal that promotes a healthy environment within which settlers may physically, commercially and socially interact. It is the authors’ ambition to have a sanctuary within a city, a typical city that showcases trade and commerce. Envisage aims to offer a different approach to traditional developments in the country. It opts to go an extra mile further and give Davao City, and the Philippines as well, something that we can call our own through Urban Design.

OBJECTIVES

E

nvisage is envisioned:

•To promote Urban Design to underdeveloped parts of the country; •To create a magnet that will draw people together; •To formulate strategies that will serve as tools for the elucidation of planning concerns; •To meet/solve existing environmental and development issues of the site; •To design without terminating the natural beauty of the environment; • To create a new way of life; •To design a sustainable environment not only to Davaoenos but to Filipinos as well; •To give Davaoenos and Filipinos something to be proud of.

“The Davao Trans Express A world-class transportation system for better city connection

P

lanning a city is like solving a puzzle. It requires the right pieces placed at exact position to complete the whole picture. Likewise, an intelligent transportation system is one of the significant pieces for a city to be highly accessible, economically viable and prosper as a whole. The Davao TransEx (Transportation Express) or commonly called

24

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), is what we proposed and incorporated throughout the project, which supposedly, will be one of the pioneer implementation in the country. The BRT is a bus-based, highly capacitated and a rapid urban transit system originated in Curitiba, Brazil in 1974, headed b its mayor Jaime Lerner. Its main function is to improve traffic quality via its own right-of-way aligned in the center of the road, having multiple car vehicles at short headways and longer stop spacing than tra- ditional streetcars and buses.

The system truly works because of its numerous advantages than any other system already implemented in the Philippines. It includes: • Loads and unloads passengers from comfortable and conveniently located stations. • The system integration allows commuters to travel across the entire network of bus routes with paying only a single fare. • Innovated BRT such as Bolgota’s TransMilenio system can carry a maximum of 35,ooo passengers per hour at a speed ranging from 27-48kph compared to LRT’s 19,000 passengers/hour and is way too fast and efficient than conventional bus services. • Has lower operational cost than LRT’s in general. • Platform-level boarding of bus makes it quick, easy and accessible for PWDs and baby strollers. • Additional income generation through contractual commercial and promotional ads at stations or posted within the bus’ periphery. In recent times, more than 150 cities and an estimate of 27 million passengers have already taken the luxury of using the BRT system every day. And this effective and successful system is what we want the Davaoinios (or Filipinos, if we may) to experience. This is our attempt of countering the unorganized and poor transportation system not just in Davao but in of the whole country. We believe that just like the fist implementation of the system roughly four decades ago, good governance and people willing to embrace changes and innovations for the betterment of the whole in general, we can create cities with strong connections to its people.

This lot is under a major commercial zone which is supposedly composed of large and medium scale of commercial structures following the Central Business District. The development of this lot is inspired by the mixed use development made by the perkins+will called Oriental Fisherman’s Wharf located at the Shanghai China. The development is designed to allow not only the gigantic commercial buildings but also the retailing of the convenience goods and the furnishing of personal services, as well as all types of commercial structures. Using 12 meters wide roads made the development more accessible to the residents. The upper part of the lot which is being divided by the brt road located at the middle is composed

of large scale commercial structure to maximize the land use. These commercial structures are call center buidings, offices buildings and other mixed use structures that will be an eye catch to the residence of the said area.

4

The lower part of the lot is composed of medium scale commercial structures where in retailed shops and other condominiums are allocated. For this kind of development, land uses must be within convenience and walking distance with each other and there must be a direct ,safe and convenient connections between the land. A planned development is a complex, colourful and creative endeavour.

The commercial heart of the city, and is characterized by the concentration of retail and office buildings. One of the 4 divisions of the central business district that stores financial institution, light industrial and mixed-use buildings along with it. The farther you go from the inner core of the Central Business District (CBD) to the outer core, the cheaper the land and the prizes of goods would be. Maximizing the lot capacity through vertical construction of high-rise buildings is used as a strategy for this particular lot.

6

ISSUES • Inadequate alignment of roads resulting to traffic difficulties among vehicles. • Long partial straight road tempts vehicular drivers to over speed. • Absence of a large public green space. OBJECTIVES • To organize a better road system that will alleviate traffic around the lot since the CBD is almost always occupied with vehicles. • To provide a greener environment by providing bicycle lanes, jogging paths. • To endorse Davao City as an established urban development that can create business opportunities for our country. STRATEGIES • Provision of a central park that will cater business people, thus preventing the heavy atmosphere of the lot. • High rise and medium rise buildings were used to maximize the lot. • A road system equipped with proper traffic signals that will secure safety to drivers and passengers and also allowing bicycle paths along public and private vehicle paths. Issues • Large amount of land reserves which makes it ineffective. • Circulation of vehicles which causes too much traffic. • Minor commercial and residential space arrangements considering green spaces Objectives • To create mixed-used buildings within which the upper storeys are for residential and lower ones are for commercial and office purposes. • To make business opportunities for the development of the community. • To create a new community for the development of the province. Strategies • Through investing a capital and use the land to make a new community which is functional. • By maximizing the use of land to draw people for them to reside. • By constructing a resort-type of development for residential spaces for a more urbanized community.

The development will soon enrich Davao city with a devouring progression for a more dynamic metropolitan zone. It is also a high-density residential zone with the perks of an overlooking view of the green features of the development. Within the inner portion exists a minor commercial zone which will lead to the growth of mixed- used development for people to have a more profit- generating business. “We aim for the betterment of our own and we want to work on it no matter how rough and strenuous it seems.”

“The most rewarding things you do in life are often the ones that look like they can’t be done.”

Pearlee Mae M. Panes

It was indeed tricky and challenging doing this Architectural magazine for our Planning 2 Urban Design subject. A project which also consumes most of our timeexperiencing restless days and sleepless nights, late meals, “no ligo” days and those frustrating “bug splats” and “not responding” dialogue box(which keeps on appearingon our Sketch Up files)that make us feel of like givingup. We took numerous revisions and seized straight-forward criticisms (that we used to laugh about) in our works.Archt. Yan, our professor and mentor, often asked us during its progress“Class, can you still do this?” The class chooses to secure answer from that question because despite the oppressions and discomforts,as future architects and designers, we aim for the betterment of our own and we want to work on it no matter how rough and strenuous it seems. Urban planning undeniably plays a great part not only in our society but has also great impact in our lives. With this remarkable project proposal, we were given the opportunity to show all our concerns, in highlighting the best urban and rural pleasures in Davao and making it a haven for Davaoeños. A city that is peaceful andmodern yet rustic. And as this project started, it was clear for us that we needed to put many more brains and creativity together to begin to wrap our minds around ways to build and design socially sustainable community (objectives). All issues were interconnected and addressed as a system and applying integrative approaches (strategies) to obtain feasible accomplishment for Davao as a whole. This includes biological and open space preservation, land use planning and promoting social equity (between people and automobiles). “When a goal matters enough to a person, that person will ALWAYS find a way to accomplish what at first seemed impossible.” –Nido Qubein All GREAT achievements require time. Now I’m proud to say that we finally did it! And I am very happy and honored to be part of this project proposal for the development of our very own “Crown Jewel” of Mindanao, Davao City. Through this we learned new things, new ideas and techniques towards sustainable development for the purpose of optimizing the effectiveness of the community’s land use and infrastructure. To God be all the glory! “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” –Philippians 4:13

TE ST IM ON IAL S

Our Davao city planning journey startedwith the site selection between proposed cities: Butuan, Davao, Tacloban and IloIlo city. Justifications were discussed by and by the majority of the class’ decision and the viability of the site, the Davao city was ultimately chosen to be our breeding ground of urban planning experimentation. After that, Davao’s social, economic, environmental, infrastructure and political aspects were tackled which play a large role in determining the proposed components and will give us insights and limitations of what type of developments should be prioritized.

In the design development phase, a parcel of land about 50 hectares was dividedfor the whole class. Each lot with corresponding zonings and type of development which is carefully planned and layout.Every week, each of us prepared schemesthat are constructively criticized by all. Also, it was the meticulous character of our professor that molded our vision of city planning, teaching us the principles of city planning.

And after months of analysis, design schemes and presentations, we finally came up with the final plans and designs. For me, everything we sacrificed paid off just by witnessing all our developments seamlessly complement with each other. While undergoing this tough yet fulfilling project, I learned 3 things: Purpose, unity and change. For me, it was not about grades anymore, it was about doing something that is conceivable, that can be used by the country we intended to serve our purpose to.And a part of that purpose is about unity. About helping each other through thick and thin of weekly proposal revisions, selflessly sharing the knowledge unto your colleagues so that they, in return, will do the same thing unto others. Those simple little things are the ones that spark change. And everything we do can be the catalyst of what we want to achieve. These are the real treasure we held on to, and motivated us to keep moving forward and accomplish such one of a kind endeavor. Blissfully, I thank this project for creating not just an opportunity to develop ourselves, but for putting up a dedicated team that is willing to be the pioneer of change.

“ Those simple little things are the ones that spark change and everything we do can be the catalyst of what we want to achieve.”
