AND SO DO THE PEOPLE OF KEY BISCAYNE This global health crisis caused by coronavirus (COVID-19) has drastically altered the way we work, shop, play, and connect with each other—at least, for the time being. So first and foremost, we pray that you and those close to you are safe. As we navigate these changing times, our commitment to serve and support you as a community is even stronger. Small businesses are facing unprecedented challenges, individuals and families feel the insecurity of the daily changes and announcements. Many are concerned for their own or a family member’s health. We understand that and we want to hear from you how we can best support you. As we face all of these things in our community and in our world, we want to take a moment to remind you of and highlight the spirit of community and resilience of the Village of Key Biscayne. The spirit of Key Biscayne is maybe best displayed by the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County, a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of seemingly impossible difficulties - the Cape Florida Lighthouse. For those of us who have the privilege of living on the Island Paradise of Key Biscayne we are familiar with the Cape Florida Lighthouse, towering 95 feet into the sky, above the white sandy beaches of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. It has been a symbol of hope, resilience and freedom for many for almost a century.
When peering up at the towering majestic landmark, it isn’t hard to imagine the mariners and fisherman of the 1800s looking to its light for guidance and safety. During the 1830s the lighthouse played a significant role in the underground Railroad Network to Freedom Trail; helping many slaves from the Bahamas find their way to freedom. Over its many years of service the lighthouse has withstood pirates, Indian attacks, civil war, hurricanes and floods. Through the years and hardships, the lighthouse has been rebuilt, modified and refurbished several times, even it’s original function replaced by modern technology. Yet, today it serves maybe it’s most important role in nearly 100 years of service. It stands as a symbol of hope, resilience and strength in a community facing unprecedented challenges. We hope that you find a peace, reassurance and strength as a community when you see this towering symbol of hope. You have come through all these hardships before and you will again. Like your lighthouse, you stand as a symbol of hope and light to the world around you. We at KB Living are proud to be partners with the community of Key Biscayne. Keep shining!

Our model has already proven its value by allowing us to promptly triage and care for all patients in need. One of the key elements to this success has been the patient’s ability to contact our physicians directly via cell phone or secure messaging. This has been a great source of reassurance and confidence to the patients, knowing that their health is in good hands.

dr.’s note
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NOVEL
CORONAVIRUS DISEASE COVID-19 CONTRIBUTED BY HAMID K. RASTI, MD In the midst of this current crisis, I would like to simply reiterate some known facts about coronavirus. The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a newly emerged strain of coronavirus. In the past, for the majority of cases, coronavirus has caused minimal symptoms and presents similarly to the common cold. However, the current novel coronavirus has the potential to cause significant respiratory and systemic disease, leading to hospitalization and, in certain situations, respiratory failure and death. The good news is, even under the current circumstances, 80 to 85% of people with COVID-19 will only experience mild symptoms and will successfully clear the disease on their own. This fact, perhaps, is one of the reasons the virus can spread so easily since people do not feel obliged to report their symptoms or are unaware of their infection.
26 KB Living • April 2020
We are still learning about all the modes of transmission; currently it is believed that human to human transmission via droplets is the most common way of passing this disease. The incubation period, which is the time from initial infection to the presentation of symptoms, is up to 14 days. This long incubation period is another one of the main challenges regarding the spread of the disease and is the basis for the 14 days of quarantine. On average, most individuals do demonstrate some presentation of the disease by the fifth day. Symptoms of COVID-19 can include fever, fatigue, dry cough, loss of appetite, muscle aches, shortness of breath, and sputum production; however, fever and dry cough have been very common denominators in most cases. Obviously, these symptoms are very common in other upper respiratory infections, which makes the exact diagnosis of the novel coronavirus that much more difficult. Although much of the emphasis has been placed on the risk of infection in individuals over 65 with pre-existing conditions, other individuals should take the infectious precautions just as seriously. It is worth mentioning that these individuals are not the only people at risk and younger people can still become seriously ill; it is important for all age groups to adhere to current isolation guidelines in order to prevent further spread of the disease. So, what happens if you have one of these symptoms? The first step is not to panic. Even in the case of infection, the chances of severe illness are still low. These persons should contact their healthcare provider for triage and further instructions. These individuals should refrain from close contact with others and self-quarantine. Although each individual case is different, shortness of breath has been a common presen-
tation in patients with serious illness. This situation in the United States is rapidly evolving and guidelines for self-quarantine and discontinuation of isolation are updated. It is extremely important to follow the most updated guidelines and information provided by your healthcare provider and the CDC. Initially, there was a significant hiccup in the deployment of testing kits. These tests are becoming more readily available in public health laboratories and private settings such as Quest and LabCorp. The specimen collection remains a challenging part of testing since the special swabs are not yet available to all clinics and are also in limited supply. It is worth mentioning that with the escalation of our testing and the wider range of screening people, there will be an ongoing increase in the number of cases. This does not necessarily translate into a rapidly spreading situation but likely a catch-up phase from the delayed testing. The current situation remains fluid and I encourage citizens to constantly refer to coronavirus.gov to obtain the most accurate information and recommendations published by the CDC. Currently, there are no available treatments for coronavirus infections. Experimental treatments and vaccines are being tested but are nowhere near being commercially available. Symptomatic treatment and social distancing remain the primary modalities of preventing serious illness and spread; as a community, we should remain vigilant. I am thankful that the city has already implemented many of the national standards, set by the CDC, to protect our citizens.

what drives you
By: Juan G. Robbin, Resident Contributor
RANGE ROVER S VA U TO B I O G R A P H Y D Y N A M I C WELCOME! YOUR SERENE HIGHNESS Welcome! Your Serene Highness. I’m sure these exact words will be uttered many times to VIP’s exiting the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic. Mention Range Rover and most think of the capable go anywhere off roader, while others immediately will think of the ultra-luxurious Range Rovers of today. Regardless, all the Range Rovers are special to drive or be driven in. Placed between the Long-wheel base (LWB) SVAutobiography and the high-performance Range Rover Sport SVR. The SVAutobiography Dynamic is the
30 KB Living • April 2020
perfect size for someone that wants more exclusivity than the standard model but doesn’t need the extra space offer with the LWB version which is mainly added rear seat roominess. The current but aging generation of the top of the line Range Rover underwent a refresh, mostly inside the cabin in 2019 keeping it up to date, but its age is starting to show on the exterior design. Once inside, the most noticeable and striking feature is the ultra-sleek center console, the dash and elegant steering wheel. The rest of the interior also received a refresh, with new designs and finishes that gives the top of the line RR a nice air of modernism mixed with old world charm.
We loved the minimalist, sleek design of the infotainment system however, we didn’t care for its complexity, lack of knobs or slow response speed. I strive for not having to use the owner’s manual in all the press cars I drive. Must be a male thing, but in this case, I wanted to try out several functions that ultimately, I just simply gave up and out came the manual. Ironically, the demographics will undoubtedly weigh heavily towards the over 50 group that like and can afford this car and their main challenge will no doubt, be to master the extensive
( 2020 ) technology and features that are offered. The rest of the interior is swathed in acres of supple, rich leather, with the trim, seat couture and switchgear, all offering a chic, premium feel to them. The dash on the SVAutobiography Dynamic we drove, featured a beautiful carbon fiber weave-look that is both elegant and modern. The sculptured seats have a diamond design stitching on the seating surfaces that looks inviting and are surprisingly comfortable regardless if you are using the front or the rear seats. Speaking of the rear seats, the center seat is comfortable, made more so by the almost flat floor. the Autobiography version offers a completely over-the-top, right side rear seat that reclines and has a business-class jet style leg rest. There is an electric, oversized arm-rest that once
it’s in the down position, features a storage area, cup-holders as well as a small yet elegant monogrammed portable mirror in a compartment that passengers can use to get ready before exiting the vehicle. Steering feedback and effort is surprisingly communicative as compared to most large SUV’s which offer vague steering feedback at best. It does, however, take some time to get it dialed in just right and become chauffeur-like smooth with the inputs. Brake and throttle offer a nice blend of balance and surefootedness that makes you feel great regardless of the traffic conditions. The true forte of the SVAutbiography Dynamic is the impressive power from its 5.0-liter V-8, 557 HP and stump-pulling 516 lb/ ft of torque. This engine comes from Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations unit. Floor it and it will effortlessly propel this 5,800 Lb. beast to 60 MPH is less than 5 seconds. I have always enjoyed driving the full-sized Range Rover primarily because of how nice it makes me feel. Part of this is due to its regal-like, low window-line design, you naturally feel majestic and powerful behind the wheel. Switchgear feel luxurious, of-
fering a satisfying finger-tip touch that reminds you, this is no ordinary SUV. Comparable Vehicles include: Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG, Bentley Bentayga and even BMW’s newcomer, the X7. The Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic is an ultra-luxury, engaging to drive, large SUV that will keep you in a rarefied, exclusive club that only the one-percenters will be able to join and that’s ok. Exclusivity is just that. Don’t forget to wave to the crowd when you exit the vehicle. THE ESSENTIALS: Price (MSRP): $178,500.00 Price (As tested): $182,740.00 Engine: 5.0 liter, 8 Cylinder Supercharged 557 HP & 516 Lb/Ft of Torque Fuel Economy (Observed): 16.5 MPG Options: 22” 5 split-spoke wheels, Driver’s Assistance Package Please visit: www.landroverusa.com Photos courtesy of Land Rover USA Follow on: Web: www.motoringstyle.com Instagram: motoringstyle

The 2020 Key Biscayne Children’s Business Fair was held on February 9th and was once again a huge success, thanks to all the sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible. “We have the privilege to live in Key Biscayne, not only because of the long sandy beaches, the tropical landscape, the beautiful weather, and amazing views but because Key Biscayne has a true sense of community. The support and excitement from local government, local businesses and schools made it clear to us that not only were we helping our daughters to have a sales spot for their product, but we were contributing to all young entrepreneurs in the village. We believe that the principled entrepreneurs of Key Biscayne are heroes and role models of for all the young people in our community.” Cristina Dalmau and Fernanda Torres, Founders

The Key Biscayne Children’s Business Fair aims to motivate young entrepreneurs ages 8 to 16 to pursue projects and understand the value of their ideas. Children create a product or service, develop a brand, design a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at this oneday marketplace. Kids are responsible for setup, sales, and interacting with the customer. It is truly a complete business handson experience and a great educational tool, and mainly, it is lots of fun. We truly emphasize the fun part of the fair; we want kids to be kids, to be passionate about what they create and to enjoy the experience. SautÊ de veau Resident Recipe 44 KB Living • April 2020
taste of key biscayne Sauté de veau
Again, this month I am sharing a French recipe from my mom! It is one of my husband and my daughters’ favorite dishes. INGREDIENTS
Veal cubes for stew: 2.2 pounds 1 large onion Pre-cut fresh mushrooms: 8 oz Bay leaves: 2 White dry wine for cooking (sauvignon blanc): 1 glass Flour 2/3 cup Olive oil Green olives Salt Pepper RECIPE
1. 2.
Cut the onion in thin slices Put small amount of olive oil in deep pan, salt it, and sauté the onions until soft and golden 3. Add veal to the pan and mix it until the veal is lightly browned 4. Make a “roux”: Sprinkle the flour on the veal and stir 5. In another pan, put the pre-cut mushrooms (no oil), stir often until they are softened 6. Add the mushrooms to the pan with the stew veal, 7. Add the glass of white wine. It should sizzle. 8. Mix everything together adding Bay Leaves and Green Olives 9. Add enough water to cover everything 10. Cook over low heat for 45 minutes 11. Use fork to check if the veal is tender Check and adjust the sauce: If the sauce is too thick, add water a small amount at a time until it is the desired consistency. If it is too runny, add some flour, again a small amount at a time until it is the desired consistency. I recommend serving with rice or pasta and paring with your favorite red wine. For the perfect finishing touch, you can serve French Crêpes for dessert. The whole family will LOVE it! About the Cook:

was thrilled and we immediately started talking. The waiter had to keep reminding us it was time to order.
When I reached out to Michelle to invite her to be part of my “Wellness Corner at KB Living magazine, she was instantly on board. She was excited and thrilled to share her experience of living on the island with her daughter, Mia.
I carefully took the small delicate glass bottle with a white and gold cap and glittering gold liquid. When I opened it, the fragrance exploded in my nose, going through my whole body and system. That is Michelle Alva. She is an explosion of goodness. And it is contagious.
Michelle is action, conscious movement. She is light and yet is present. We met the next day for lunch at the Square. Sitting across the table from me, she opened a big smile. And with her eyes shining, gave me a bottle of her exclusive fragrance. Now I
As her client for the past few years, I know personally that working with her is to be embraced in love and care. A splash of refreshing nourishment. I have watched her not only growing into her passion and mission but also in raising her beautiful daughter that is becoming a woman in her own right.

I want to share with you how your amazing Key Biscayne neighbours are contributing to the wellness of themselves and others. Here is my interview with Michelle. Michelle, it has been so much fun getting to know more about you and what you do to spread wellness from Key Biscayne to the world. Tell us about your journey and your “whys.” Being a loving and caring mom, finding your passion and living in Key Biscayne.
My life journey led me to discover that we hold memories, emotions and traumas in our actual body tissues. For example, I had chronic pain from things that happened to me when I was fourteen years old. This experience led me to seek ways of healing and clearing chronic pain in ways that are rapid, compassionate, effective and life-changing. At seventeen I began Yoga and it was the only thing that kept me peaceful and connected to a deeper part of me. I graduated as a physical therapist from FIU when I was twenty-two and since then continued to expand my expertise. I’ve integrated different healing modalities such as energy healing, NLP/Hypnosis, Tantra, Shamanism and others.
traumas have led me to create the Alva Method Of Self-empowered Healing. Today, some of my clients shift from an eight to ten level of chronic pain (which they had for years) to zero in just one session. Others heal their chronic pain with just a thirty-minute phone session. I feel so blessed to serve individuals who have been suffering for years. Even decades! How does living in Key Biscayne align and contribute to your life’s vision?
To me, Key Biscayne IS heaven on earth. It is a quiet island amidst a crazy and busy city. It reminds us to come back home to our pure essential nature. I simply love living here because it feels so peaceful. It’s an innocent and simple yet plentiful place where we are reminded to enjoy every moment more fully. My healing and empowering work is all about coming back home inside ourselves to experience our true nature which is powerful, energetic and peaceful. Key Biscayne is the perfect place for my clients to come and get away to re-align and re-connect. Key Biscayne supports the healing work. And, my clients from out of town always comment on how they feel when crossing the bridges to get to us. They feel that is already part of the healing experience.
I’ve been curious all my life as to how we can feel more alive, healthy and connected naturally. My experiences, pains and April 2020 • KB Living

How do Key Biscayne resources assist in your life’s wellness?
I like to go for beach walks at Crandon Park, Bill Baggs State Park. I get to connect with such an abundance of nature right in my backyard. I use our island’s natural resources in the healing process. Bringing my clients to the beach and inviting them to connect with their inner self with an immersion in nature. Living and working in Key Biscayne creates a sense of peace and calm in my body-mind which I know benefits everyone in my life! How did you become the woman of your dreams and how does that overflow into your wellness/healing work?
By loving myself and not looking for outside validation. Eight years ago, I experienced the breakthrough awareness that we can’t be happy when we seek happiness in others. Before that I was co-dependent. I needed to break free from my old model of living in order to discover that I am enough. That I am lovable. That I can be an entrepreneur and live my dream life doing my dream job. Following my own guidance, I broke away from the traditional physical therapy model by integrating yoga, meditation, sound healing, shamanic practices, and NLP/Hypnosis into my work with chronic pain clients. I have found that one in three women have had some sort of trauma. I am extremely grateful to be of service to them. I am blessed to witness couples rekindle their marriages and improve their family’s life with these powerful healing approaches. This is my dream coming true - assisting people, families and communities to become happier and enjoy all that life has to offer. In honor of Mothers’ Day next month and to have some fun, share with us about the woman, mom and healer that is Michelle through the eyes of your daughter. I was inspired to ask this question because every time you talk about Mia, your eyes shine and your smile becomes bigger than life.
I know in my heart that my daughter is proud of me. As a divorced, single mom, I am devoted and passionate about teaching and encouraging Mia to lead an empowered life. I am patient, mindful, non-judgmental and accepting to the best of my abilities with her and others. Including myself. Every day I choose love, acceptance, forgiveness and compassion over fear. And I know that reflects in my daughter living in a state of peace and gratitude, knowing she is so loved and that she can always count on me. I asked Mia to tell us about her Mom, through her eyes.
My mom is very social and caring. I trust her. I think she is very confident and an open person. She is very good at making people feel cared for. Mom is a free spirit.

She is easy to talk to. I receive love from her by being comfortable with her and being able to trust her with any problem I might face or being able to be spontaneous with her. She is really fun. She always finds the good in everything and wants to learn and grow with me from every challenge. Mom, you allow me to grow and make conscious decisions that help me better myself as an individual and mature more because I must handle situations head-on rather than be restricted and clueless. Michelle, do you have tips or words you would like to leave for our Key Biscayne community?
Everything is a belief and a mindset. So it’s very important for us to be self-aware of the thought diet we are feeding ourselves. Whatever you believe is what you will receive. You are worth having everything your heart desires and creating your dream life. You don’t have to settle for anything less. Your body is a reflection of the thoughts and food you feed it. A big part of this is your emotional health. We must make more time to feel and be with our feelings, so we can diminish our stress and flush out past emotions. Most of us are living with stagnated emotions manifesting as resentment, bitterness, sadness and anger, judgment. All of which take us away from our true, essential nature that is LOVE. You can find out more about Michelle and The Alva Method® Of Healing At The Speed Of Light at www.michellealva.com.

National Parks
American
South of the
tour & travel By Shauna Osborne
Growing up in the South, some of my favorite family vacations were to national parks. From soaring mountains to marshy lowlands to stunning seacoasts, we have an embarrassment of riches in our national parks. Whether you’re in the mood to hike, soak, boat, explore, or wrestle a gator, there’s something for everyone! As the weather starts to warm up this month, consider a weekend trip to one of these lovely Southern locales.
Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas This small, nearly urban national park, originally called Hot Springs Reservation, was set aside by Congress in 1832 to protect and promote the enjoyment of the land’s most precious resource: the hot springs. Free to the public, it is the oldest park in the country managed by the National Park System, and thousands of visitors each year flock to the area to enjoy its 47 natural hot springs (have a proper soak in one of the facilities on Bathhouse Row!), hike the numerous trails (the 8.9-mile Sunset Trail loop is a popular one), and take in the thriving local art scene (check out the Ozark Bathhouse, which operated as a bathhouse until 1977 and reopened in 2014 as a fine art gallery). Everglades National Park, Florida Naturally, the first things that spring to mind when we think of the Everglades are swamps and alligators, but this remarkable 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve, located on the southern tip of Florida, has so much more to offer! The land was set aside as a national park in 1934, with the express purpose of protecting the subtropical wilderness’ fragile ecosystem, as it is home to 36 threatened or protected species, 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 spe-

cies of reptiles. Besides exploring the marshlands, visitors to the park can enjoy boating, fishing, kayaking, and camping. Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky Located in central Kentucky, this national park and World Heritage Site encompasses parts of the world’s longest cave system (more than 400 miles mapped so far!), Mammoth Cave. In addition to touring parts of the cave system, visitors to Mammoth Cave National Park can take advantage of the hiking, horseback riding, biking, picnicking, camping, and gorgeous scenery (particularly along the Green River) the park has to offer. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia This gorgeous national park is less than 100 miles from Washington, D.C., and offers nearly 200,000 acres of protected land, home to black bears, deer, and more than 200 species of birds. With over 500 miles of trails varying in difficulty, Shenandoah is a hiker’s dream, offering up gorgeous waterfall hikes such as South River Falls, Whiteoak Canyon Falls, and Dark Hollow Falls, all accessible from Skyline Drive, a scenic 105-mile road that runs the length of the park and comprises 75 stunning overlooks.

This month we visited with Jon Garito, Vice President of Key Biscayne Tennis Association. He enthusiastically shared some of the history, the daily activities and the passion of the association to serve individual players and the KB Community as a whole.
Started in 1978 as a grass-roots effort by Key Biscayne tennis enthusiasts, the Key Biscayne Tennis Association has turned into a local favorite for tennis players from the entire area. Here, members of all skill levels can meet and compete in a family atmosphere built on the company of friends and the fulfillment of long-term relationships. We have been here for nearly 30 years and still provide a fun place to meet and make friends, on and off the courts. Key Biscayne Tennis Association has matured into a full-practice facility featuring nine Har-Tru clay courts, four are lighted for night play and one Deco-Turf hard court. As a good neighbor to the Miami Open (formerly known as Sony-Ericsson), it has attracted the attention of many top-ranked players - Gustavo Kuerten, Marcelo Rios, Justine Henin, Andy Roddick, and Gabriela Sabatini to name just a few. Key Biscayne Tennis Association offers a pro shop, deck seating, restrooms, ice, drinks, snacks and outstanding professional instructions. There is plenty of parking as KBTA is neatly tucked within the lush, tropical

golf course of Key Biscayne. KBTA also hosts many outside events such as charity, school, and community functions. Some including tennis and some not. Tennis birthday parties and other private and business events are very popular. The outside deck has tables and chairs accommodating over 50 people. There is a fully operational kitchen designed for catering. For the past 6 years, I have devoted over 30 hours each week to make the club a safe, high-quality tennis facility that is also a warm and friendly place to play tennis and socialize. When I joined the board of directors, the tennis club was about to close due to mismanagement of finances and a deficit of $30,000. Relying on my business background and creativity, I got the club finances on track and in the black within 6 months. The KBTA board asked me to stay on as manager (without a salary) and I happily agreed because it’s a wonderful facility that serves so many of the Key Biscayne community, including my family! John Rivella, the KBTA president since 2013 (also at no salary) gives so much of his time and energy in overseeing the day-to-day repairs and maintenance. The board of directors

Besides the Arraya Tennis Academy, KBTA also is the host to the All Island, Fall Island, Winter Classic tennis tournaments. These tournaments bring over 400 tennis players from Key Biscayne and the surrounding Miami Dade community September through June. KBTA also hosted the USTA and South Florida ladies’ tennis leagues. Over 100 ladies play their matches at KBTA Monday through Friday. In 2018 and 19, we had over 100 inner-city kids here at our nonprofit public tennis facility. Beginning at 9:30 am till 4pm our Tennis Pros donated their time to give Miami Dade inner-city kids a day of tennis activities. This was an amazing day and rewarding for our Pros, volunteers, and of course the kids!! The Key Biscayne Tennis Associations, Inc. was planned, financed and built by its charter members without governmental assistance. Membership dues, hourly court fees, fund-raisers, tournaments, Pro-agreements and various donations, provide all the operating expenses, including lease payments for the land to Dade County. The Association is a self-managed public facility available to all. We are classed with the Federal Government as a non-profit organization. Donations are deductible for income tax purposes. KBTA SPRING UPDATE Message from Jon Garito
Due to the current unprecedented events, we unfortunately need to take a “ time out “ from our scheduled and much anticipated 2020 Miami Inner-City Kids Day event. All of our many other KBTA tennis events for March and April are on hold as well. With all the shutdowns due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, children and adults are home practicing social distancing and good hygiene. The day that I was told to close the KBTA tennis club by Miami Dade County I tried to remain calm and measured. It saddened me to have to deliver this sobering news to the Arraya Junior Tennis Academy, our KBTA members, and our many community players. There was an emptiness that we cannot ignore. Tennis is one of the greatest healers. KBTA has always been a great social meeting place for children, adults and our community. A serene place to take your mind off something. For kids it’s a great release after stressful classes, tests and annoying parents. For adults it’s a release from everyday work and financial stresses. There is also a camaraderie that comes through playing tennis for kids and adults. We all miss it and we are sad that it was taken away from us, even though it is only temporary. Together with Pablo Arraya we are focusing on using social media to provide a communal, interactive tennis project for Adults and Kids who are now missing out on the sport they love. Arraya Tennis Cares for Kids and
Arraya Tennis Cares for Adults. The goal is to provide indoor interactive tennis activities and games through the various social media outlets. The games and activities will provide prizes to be collected when the KBTA tennis facility opens again. We are looking forward to the day we can reopen and welcome everyone back. To prepare for that day, John Rivella, the Key Biscayne Tennis Association President, along with our valued court and facility maintenance manager, Raul Leon, are taking full advantage of this downtime to refurbish the clay courts. John Rivella explains that it’s very rare that the KBTA courts and facility are empty. So it’s an excellent opportunity to finetune the clay courts. Old clay materials are being removed and new clay is being added, rolled and groomed. The inside clubhouse and outdoor deck areas are being cleaned and sanitized daily as well. KBTA courts will be better than ever when we reopen. For now, we all need to be calm and follow the instructions of our Village of Key Biscayne, Miami Dade County, the CDC and WHO.

HEALTH
I grew up in a Southern family with their roots deep in the soil. My parents and grandparents grew anything at all you’d want to eat, right there in our back gardens, and to this day, canned corn and green beans are ruined for me, lacking that fresh-from-the-sunshine taste.
Despite the time and care the outdoor gardens took, my grandmother’s favorite plants to meddle with were, by far, her houseplants. That love spilled over to my mother, her sisters, and, eventually, to me. Though my collection may look a little different than hers (Grandma never would’ve had the patience for finicky succulents), we both recognized the endless benefits of having both useful and visually engaging plants in the home. The following is a list of houseplants that, in addition to being elegant décor, offer notable health benefits to the members of your household!
ALOE VERA
As every after-sun lotion label corroborates, this plant has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy to ease irritated skin. The clear, gel-like substance found inside the plant’s leaves can be used to soothe and heal burns, psoriasis, and cold sores when applied directly to the skin. Additionally, aloe vera is effective in purifying the air, absorbing airborne compounds from toxic cleaning agents and paints, harmful microorganisms, and dust. BOSTON FERN
PEACE LILY
In addition to its rich, dark green leaves and gorgeous white “flowers” in the summer, the stunning peace lily is a master of air-pollutant removal, working hard to absorb and break down ammonia, benzene, xylene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene throughout your home. Sometimes called “closet plants,” peace lilies are perfect for homes or rooms that don’t get a lot of natural light. SNAKE PLANT
This low-maintenance plant is an excellent (and popular) choice for small apartments and the bedroom, working while you sleep to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. Snake plants purify by removing many toxins from the air, including formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, and xylene, absorbing them through their leaves. They release moisture into the air and minimize airborne allergens as well.

With its lush green foliage, the Boston fern helps rid the home of harmful toxins and is the ideal houseplant for locales with humidity problems, as it is considered a natural humidifier. These easy-to-grow plants can offer moisturizing health benefits to those who suffer from dry skin, noses, or throats.

Easy Ways to Improve Your
FINANCIAL L

April is Financial Literacy Month, as designated by former President Barack Obama in 2010 in response to the 2008 American financial crisis, which he called “the result of both irresponsible actions on Wall Street and everyday choices on Main Street.” Indeed, financial ignorance can lead to a variety of negative consequences, including irresponsible spending, dangerous debt levels, and high amounts of stress, especially for financially vulnerable populations like the elderly, women, and teens. No matter who you are, education in financial literacy is key. Read financial books and newspapers (and listen to podcasts).
Ask the experts.
Dive into newspapers and magazines (think the financial section of local/regional newspapers, as well as the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Fortune, Forbes, and Money), as well as books geared toward money matters. Also, there’s a podcast for every subject nowadays, and the arena of finance is no exception. Just want the basics? Try The Dave Ramsey Show or So Money. What about info on investing? You’ll want InvestED or We Study Billionaires. Seeking women-focused financial info? Look for HerMoney or Mo’ Money.
Who better to turn to with your burning financial questions than a professional? They can listen and assess your current situation and how you are handling credit and debt; uncover solutions, whether about day-to-day money situations or more complex, long-term scenarios; make suggestions for how to pay off, consolidate, and manage finances; and help you plan for future financial needs and stay on track going forward.
Use social media and your network.
A study by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in 2019 showed declining rates of financial literacy among Americans, yet for most of us, our financial situations are more complicated than ever, between retirement accounts, investments, student loans, medical debt, credit cards, mortgages/rent, and other household expenses. It’s important to keep your financial literacy knowledge base growing as aspects of your health, career, family, and living situation change over the years. Knowledge is power!
Though I strongly support the use of social media for sharing cute doggy photos, you can make your social media time more productive by following financial experts on Twitter or LinkedIn; maybe join a personal finance/support Facebook group. Also, don’t overlook the opportunity to access the knowledge you have close at hand through your immediate network. Use the knowledge (and lessons learned) from your circle of influence – successful friends, family members, or even your boss.

ALLERGIES How They Work (and Some Ideas for Relief!)
A
h, springtime – the birds are singing, the leaves are unfurling, the flowers are blooming. Such a beautiful time of year… unless you, like millions of other sneezy, miserable Americans, suffer from springtime allergies. Also known as “hay fever” or “rhinitis,” spring allergies can be blamed in most cases on pollen, of which there is an abundance this time of year, and can provoke a variety of unpleasant symptoms, including itchy, watery eyes; swollen and/or painful sinuses; runny or stuffy nose; post-nasal drip; and cough.
tract cells, thus inhibiting the inflammatory process. However, these drugs come with their own spectrum of disagreeable side effects, including dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, and weightgain. Just the mental “fuzziness” alone is enough to keep some allergy sufferers away! Luckily, some natural options show promise in rescuing us from the haze of springtime allergies.
The basics: Start by keeping your windows and doors closed on Scientifically Speaking… What is it about springtime that causes our respiratory systems to betray us? We can blame it on a chemical compound our body produces called histamine. As mentioned above, when spring begins, plants and trees release pollen into the air in an attempt to reproduce. Many of us are sensitive to these substances, causing our bodies to release allergic antibodies to help our immune systems eliminate them. These allergic antibodies set out to attack and destroy the pollen/spore invaders as we are exposed to them, and part of the attack deployment is, you guessed it, the release of histamine into our bloodstreams and mucous membranes. Histamine only wants to protect us… but it’s hard for us to see that through itchy, teary eyes! Histamine triggers sneezing to try to rid nasal passages of irritating allergens and also causes the linings of the nose and eyes to swell and redden so additional allergens can’t enter the body there.
Alleviating Symptoms When springtime rolls around, many of us automatically reach into the medicine cabinet for drugs created specifically for combating allergy symptoms. Predictably named “antihistamines,” these commonly used medications work by not allowing histamine to attach to skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory
high pollen days, as well as leaving your shoes at the door, and bathing and changing clothes quickly once you’re in for the day, ensuring you don’t allow any hitchhiking pollen to linger. Stay hydrated to thin your mucus, providing some relief for congestion and post-nasal drip. Installing HEPA filters throughout your home, changing bedding, dusting, and vacuuming upholstered furniture and curtains as often as possible are also beneficial.
Butterbur: Butterbur is a type of marsh plant that, when consumed, has been shown by researchers to be incredibly promising in suppressing the body’s allergic responses to seasonal triggers, working similarly to antihistamines that treat nasal allergies without the side effect of drowsiness. Probiotics: Probiotics are live microorganisms that promote a healthy digestive tract and immune system; these friendly, healthy bacteria, in essence, help alleviate allergy symptoms by restoring the diverse gut flora that must be present to prevent our body’s immune response to foreign substances (in this case, allergens!). As always, consult your doctor before undertaking any new treatments. Happy spring!
