NICO SALINO MEET

ARTIST AND NATURE ENTHUSIAST

20 KB Living • February 2020

This month we share our interview with Nico Salino, artist, nature enthusiast, and lifelong resident of Key Biscayne. We think you will fall in love with his talent and his enthusiasm for life on the island. The future of Key Biscayne looks bright with young people like Nico on the horizon. How long have you lived on Key Biscayne? I’ve lived on Key

Biscayne my whole life, really. My parents moved here from Lima when I was only two. I’m now 18. Tell us a little about your family. My family here consists of my mother, Marivi Riesser, my father, Massimo Salino, and sister, Valentina, and we are a happy bunch. I also have a pet hamster and a girlfriend.

What is your favorite part of living on Key Biscayne? My favor-

ite part about living on the Key is the natural setting it has to offer. While it is a town of 13,000 people, you can still get lost in the forest, wander to the farthest points of the beach, or go swimming in the clear warm waters teeming with life. I am a big nature enthusiast and I have access to all sorts of strange wildlife to learn about here. Whenever I have watched tiny sea turtles emerge from their sandy nests, or I have swum through the kaleidoscope coral reefs offshore where the wild-eyed fish stare back at you, or I have walked in the dense thickets dripping with the movements of colorful songbirds and butterflies, I have felt happy to be alive. What high school did you attend? I graduated from New World School of the Arts. I was in their visual arts program. Where are you currently attending school and what course of study are you pursuing? I’m a freshman at Miami-Dade College.

I’m pursuing a degree in fine arts with an emphasis on the environmental science field. Tell us about your course of study and how you chose this field? I

have always enjoyed drawing and painting since I was a child. I guess I figured out it’s what I want to do for a living sometime in high school. I really admire people who have combined nature exploration with art and writing like Charles Darwin, John James Audubon, or Ernest Hemingway. Have you received recognition or acknowledgment of achievement for your field of study? I won a couple of student art

competitions in high school. It was really neat to receive cash prizes for making art. It’s always a great feeling when hard work pays off. I also won a few scholarship grants, one being the Eileen McCaughan scholarship for students here on Key Biscayne. Are you involved in extra activities outside of your studies that might enhance your college experience? I am not

involved in any extra school activities right now; I’ve had a couple of jobs in the past two years. My focus is really on my art and my studies. What do you do in your spare time?

Other than drawing and painting, I have many hobbies. Wherever I am in the world, I carry a camera and binoculars everywhere. Observing wild birds is one of my favorite

22 KB Living • February 2020

hobbies and to this day I have personally recorded over 200 bird species on the key. I also enjoy fishing quite a lot and I’ve become pretty good at it over the years. Key Biscayne offers many excellent angling opportunities. I mainly fish for snook, tarpon, sharks, and bonefish at the beach or paddling on the bay. Fishing is not completely useless; it’s a great way to get fresh meat! The biggest fish I have caught in the waters off the Key was a massive hundred-pound tarpon which was about five feet long. I fought it for two hours from a paddleboard one evening as it towed me around all over the bay near the yacht club before I released it. I also like netting insects like moths, butterflies, beetles, and dragonflies to observe and photograph them up close. I keep track of all my wildlife sightings using applications like “iNaturalist” to upload my photographs. I mostly ride my bike to get wherever I need to go because it’s sustainable, free, and good exercise. Your art is obviously a passion for you. How did the passion develop and how long have you been interested in art and nature?

Painting nature scenes is a great passion of mine. When I was bored as a kid, I would draw pictures from children’s books about animals. I guess it just made me curious.

YOU ARE FREE

If you can make a good life doing what you love,

24 KB Living • February 2020

In my paintings, I try to depict my animal subjects in their environments as accurately as possible. I aim to make paintings that are lively and pay close attention to the details in the patterns of nature. I make sure that everything is accurate from the anatomy of the animal down to the species of the plant or polyp in the background. Painting nature scenes from life is a very meditative endeavor and requires little thought once you get into the zone. I like to think of it as playing with colors. It’s a great output for my energy and creativity. Lately, I have been taking canvases to Bill Baggs State Park and spending the day painting in the forest or on the beach. What do you love most about pursuing your art? I like what I

learn about me during the creative process. Completing a painting requires a lot of digging within yourself and in order to make artwork that you are proud of; you have to make a lot that you don’t like. It’s frustrating, but it is the only way to learn. What opportunities or people in the community have influenced your art and interest in nature? Key Biscayne in the spring and

fall is an outstanding place to view a wide array of migratory birds. There are millions of birds that move through our area in the migration seasons and many stop at our island to rest and find food. Most people are unaware of the circus of bird-life that descends over the island during the migration seasons. I volunteered at the Cape Florida Banding Station for two seasons. It is a really neat place where they capture wild songbirds and place numbered rings on their legs to track their seasonal movements. Bird migration is such a mystery and getting to be a part of the program was an eye-opening experience. Getting to hold wild birds in my hand was a blessing. It offers you such a different perspective of life and makes you imagine the world these creatures

see from their eyes as they fly freely around the globe. In order to protect these winged sentient creatures, people should try to preserve as many large trees as possible without trimming and only plant native shrubbery. If you were to ask your parents or classmates what makes you, YOU, what would they say? They would probably call me stub-

born and one-track-minded, but they still love me. What is something unique about you that you would like to share?

I don’t know. I’m the same as everyone else, really. I guess I enjoy painting more than most people and I don’t really watch any television. What are your plans for the future? My goal is to continue improving on my practices and use them soon to make a career for myself as an illustrator and continue learning about the natural world. I would like to travel to remote locations and witness the wonders of the planet. What advice would you give to a young person about pursuing their passion and education? I would tell them to stay honest with

themselves and take themselves seriously most of the time. Your passion is what defines you and no one should be able to tell you otherwise. If you can make a good life doing what you love, you are free. And that sums it up nicely: “If you can make a good life doing what you love, you are free.”

Do you know an individual, or a family that should be featured? Photos are on us. Contact us today, KBliving@n2pub.com.

CRANDON PARK

A Jewel of Key Biscayne

34 KB Living • February 2020

On the beautiful island paradise of Key Biscayne, you can find one of Miami’s most treasured public parks. Crandon Park is on the northernmost part of the island and offers tennis, golf, eco-adventures, nature hikes, a beach, a marina and much more. The land where Crandon Park is now was originally owned by the wealthy Commodore William John Matheson and was once a part of one of the largest coconut plantations in the United States. The Matheson family generously donated over 800 acres of their land to the county in 1940 with the condition that Miami-Dade would create a public park. But first, a bridge needed to be built connecting Key Biscayne to the mainland.

Crandon Park | Courtsey of Miami-Dade County

The Park became home to Miami’s first zoo, with exotic animals and even bears and goats rescued from a traveling circus. In 1981, Crandon Park Zoo moved south and was renamed Miami MetroZoo with much larger and safer enclosures. Today, the old zoo is just steps from the beach and has become a botanical garden full of wild birds like peacocks and exotic cranes. The old zoo and botanical garden park offers wide paths and pleasant walks or bike rides that take you past large concrete coral walls and water features, including several canals and small lakes, that were once part of larger outdoor enclosures. Some of the old buildings and an arch that served as the bases for cages are still standing. Now integrated into the natural surroundings, they are a must-see and experience for both residents and visitors. Crandon Park’s amenities offer something for everyone and for every interest including Crandon Botanical Gardens, the Crandon

Park Visitor and Nature Center, Crandon Marina, Crandon Golf Course, Crandon Tennis Center (once home to the Miami Open), picnic areas with tables and public grills, bicycle and running paths and, of course, the beautiful beach area. Rental equipment at Crandon Park’s beach is also available. You can rent chairs and umbrellas as well as kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. The Nature Center offers educational tours on Crandon Park like Sea Grass tours and nature hikes and kiteboard enthusiasts can launch their kites in a safe and designated Kite Boarding area. Crandon Tennis Center houses 27 courts, including 13 that are lighted and playable until 10pm. They offer lessons, accept reservations and the courts are wheelchair accessible. For many years, the tennis center hosted the Miami Open with greats like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer showing off at the final more than once.

Love. Legacy. AND HOW TENNIS CONTINUES TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.

H

onoring Aurelio “Oreo” Portuondo, over a hundred people gathered at the Key Biscayne Tennis Association to pay tribute to a tennis pro who passed away, one whose passion was helping young people learn the game he loved.

Taking advantage of South Florida’s perfect winter weather during the first month of the new year, this was an event to remember. The tropical backdrop of the island venue created an inspirational scene for friends and family of the much-loved tennis pro to host the first annual Coldwell Cares “Oreo” Tennis Tournament for charity. “Oreo” Portuondo died of cancer June 18, 2018 at the age of 57. In keeping with Oreo’s lifelong quest to coach kids, especially those who might not be able to afford tennis lessons, KBTA Pro Pablo Arraya, in conjunction with Coldwell Banker, generated much needed money to create a scholarship for kids in need of financial support. It was a dream come true, according to Betty Portuondo, who said her stepson would have been thrilled to see people come together to help others, especially in his honor. The event raised an estimated $25,000 reaching the goal set by both Arraya and the Portuondo family. “My main objective was to leave a legacy he would be proud of,” Oreo’s stepmom said. "He always wanted to help kids who wanted to play tennis. So that was my main goal--to be able to help a child to take tennis lessons who can’t afford it. I think that the best thing you can do when somebody passes away is to try and honor them in a positive way that represents what they would want.” Arraya said that he and Oreo talked about their respective commitment to helping kids often while working together at KBTA. The former ATP top 30 player was ecstatic about the turnout and success of the first ever Oreo event. “It was fantastic,” Arraya said, reminiscing about the scene at KBTA. “We had 60 people register to play and more who wanted to play but we were maxed-out, which was amazing.” From volunteers to players to sponsors, the success of the event was a collective effort. Betty Portuondo, who has worked for Coldwell Banker for 30 years, said she was extremely proud and grateful her employer served as the title sponsor helping in numerous ways before and during the event. “The support I had from the Coldwell Banker committee was incredible” she said, adding that Vice President Nancy Corey also attended the event. The Coldwell Banker Committee included: Michael Suarez, Bea Rocha, Manny Gomez, Pablo Padul, Natalie Anda , Birgit Lahaye, Becky Lozano and Monica Steinmuller. “I really want to thank Coldwell Banker. They were great,” Arraya said. People came from all over the world to honor Oreo while raising money for his favorite cause. “It was amazing,” Arraya said in his typically enthusiastic style. “There were people there from Spain, New York, Argentina... Oreo always loved a party, so he would have been so happy that we all enjoyed ourselves.” Betty Portunundo was impressed by the turnout as well, mentioning that Oreo’s widow, Ola, returned from a Christmas vacation in her native Poland to attend the event, Oreo’s mother Beba Lobo came from Costa Rica, and his father Aurelio was there as well. “So many people shared stories about Oreo and the many lives he touched,” Betty Portuundo said, her voice filled with emotion. “That’s when I truly realized how many people he touched during his lifetime.” Now it appears the late tennis pro will continue to touch people’s lives as Arraya said the success of the tournament will enable him to do more than even he anticipated. “With that amount of money we raised, I’m going to be able to give tennis lessons to someone in need and we will probably end up helping two kids.” KBTA is the home of The Arraya Tennis Academy. The two entities have a history of helping which is a critical part of their overall mission statement. “First of all, KBTA is a non-profit, so it’s important for us to be in touch with

the community and Arraya Tennis has sent so many kids to college. KTBA is an extension of that,” Arraya said, looking forward to the future. “It’s been on my mind for a long time, and something Oreo and I often talked about,” Arraya said remembering his friend and fellow tennis pro. “I’m going to find a person who can’t afford lessons and coach them and train them and hopefully get them in position to play in college and maybe change their life.” Arraya believes events like the Coldwell Cares “Oreo” Tennis Tournament will have positive repercussions reaching far beyond the baseline. “The more people we help in sports the better our community is going to be.”

MACHU PICCHU Travin Family Vacation

60 KB Living • February 2020

Are you ready to take your family on an exciting adventure to start off 2020 with a bang? Our family trip to Peru was by far one of the most exciting and inspiring vacations we ever took. We began our adventure to Paracas where we took a boat trip through the “Mini Galapagos” islands where we saw sea lions lounging on huge rocks and a sea of birds covering the islands.

The next stop was sand duning and sand duning down the Dunas de Ica did not disappoint! We rode in open jeeps with a driver who drove like Dale Earnhardt Jr.! It felt like a fast and Furious roller coaster winding through the dunes. Then he stopped on top of the huge sand dune mountain and said to “get out.” He gave us a small plastic sled to ride down the huge sand dune face first! OK...we can do this. The kids quickly jumped out of the Jeep, hopped on the sled face first, laughing all the way down. February 2020 • KB Living

We are off to the Sacred Valley where we can drive our own ATVs through the beautiful picturesque Sacred Valley. We drove through the mountainside and through charming, old towns passing herds of llamas along the way. The grand finale has arrived. Yes, today we will go see one of the seven wonders of the world...Machu Picchu! We climbed to the top of the man-made village which was formed back in 1450. Machu Picchu was completely awe-inspiring and magical. There are no words worthy to describe the incredible, amazing natural beauty. I guess that’s why it’s one of the seven wonders of the world. Simply unforgettable. If you or anyone you know would like to share a travel experience, then this is the place to be. This gives your friends and neighbors the chance to experience your travels with you. Email us at KBLiving@N2pub.com to find out how to submit your story.

LEMON GARLIC BUTTER SHRIMP with

zucchini noodles

taste of key biscayne

INGREDIENTS LIST FOR THE LEMON GARLIC BUTTER SHRIMP WITH ZUCCHINI NOODLES • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 pound (450g) raw medium shrimp, peeled and deveined 4 medium zucchini 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 tablespoons softened butter, or ghee, divided 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning Pinch of red pepper flakes Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon 1/4 cup (60ml) chicken or vegetable stock (or white wine) Hot sauce of your choice, to taste (we used Sriracha) Salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

DIRECTIONS 1. To prepare this lemon garlic butter shrimp recipe with zucchini noodles: Wash and trim the ends of the zucchini. Make the zucchini pasta using a spiralizer or julienne peeler and set aside. 2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil and 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp in one layer and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook shrimp for one minute without stirring, so the bottom of the shrimps get slightly browned. 3. Add the chopped garlic, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes and then stir the shrimp for another minute or two to cook shrimp the other side. Transfer the grilled shrimp to a shallow plate. 4. In the same pan, add remaining butter, lemon juice, chicken or vegetable stock, and hot sauce to the pan. Bring the sauce to a simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring regularly. 5. Stir in the zucchini noodles and cook until done, about 2 minutes, stirring regularly. Allow the sauce to reduce a bit if it’s too watery. Add the grilled shrimp back to the pan and stir for another minute. Serve immediately your shrimp zucchini noodles with lemon slices, extra parsley, and pepper. Enjoy! Notes: Sometimes, zucchini noodles tend to render some water while cooking, so you can sprinkle zucchini pasta with salt and let sit in a colander while you’re cooking shrimp. Press with your hands to remove excess water; then rinse and drain thoroughly before adding to the pan. Do you have a delicious family recipe or favorite food you’d like to share?
