the Comeback!

W E R I S E TO G E T H E R There is something special about a comeback. Virtually, every major movie features some version of a comeback or the overcoming of a significant obstacle. Some of our favorite (and heartbreaking) moments in sports are thanks to a comeback. You’ve probably had your own. Whether it’s in sports, business, or life, we all face setbacks from time to time. In fact, I believe that even in ordinary times we’re either in the midst of a setback, about to go into one, or actively making a comeback out of one. Now, in this historic year of 2020, many of us are facing setbacks. It might not be financial, it could be mentally or emotionally as we cope with juggling the demands of working from home while we were home-schooling kids or missing loved ones that we haven’t been able to visit recently. Or maybe this year has been unusually positive and you’re experiencing good fortune and blessings during the madness of 2020. Well, whether you are on the side of crafting your greatest comeback or you are in a great spot, I’d like to encourage you to seek out others. We are all stronger together. We will rise together. This community is stronger than we may even give it credit for. We are more resilient than we realize when we work together to support each other. Thanks to our amazing business sponsors, we’re able to bring you this publication that helps connect the community. Thank you to everyone who has supported our sponsors. If you haven’t yet, please look for the opportunity to engage with them. We are very selective with who sponsors this publication, so if you see them in here, they’re great people running exceptional businesses. If you know of someone who could use help on their comeback journey or you’d like to offer help, please reach out to me and I’d be honored to help make a connection. Our comebacks will be even greater than our setbacks. We will rise together! Be Blessed, Dear Friends!

Hold on to your hat; it’s going to be a

wild ride! Mercedes AMG-GT C Roadster (2020)

26 KB Living • July 2020

The AMG-GT C Roadster is the latest from the Mercedes-Benz AMG division, and it is one of the most aggressive and, dare we say it, insane roadsters available for sale. You can never go wrong with design elements that feature a long sweeping hood and a sleek passenger cabin. An elegant yet sporty affair that is instantly noticed by car aficionados as well as the casual onlooker. In fact, during my week with the GT C Roadster, I got plenty of thumbs up from the harshest car critics of them all, the local teenage crowd! Without a doubt, the AMG stylists used the most beautiful Mercedes-Benz ever designed, in my opinion, the mid-50s 300SL Gullwing and its convertible equivalent called the roadster as inspiration for the sumptuous GT C. There is a hunkered-down, aggressive look from all sides. A large trunk-mounted spoiler also pays homage to the past SLs, while generating the required downforce needed to keep the GT C securely planted. Naturally, this is in case you are inclined to drive it at triple-digit speeds, on the track only,

o course. The front grille is all-business with the noticeable vertical strakes, of ffeaturing the iconic three-pointed star in the middle of it all. Everything in tthe GT C has a function that is focused on the task at hand, to make this the ssportiest road-going roadster Mercedes-AMG has ever built. This roadster iis a true tour de force in design, highlighting sinewy lines through the body, aacting not only as accents but also helping in aerodynamics and performance. The large, elegant wheels barely hide the huge AMG-engineered brakes, T while the rear of the GT C shows off jewel-like tail lamps as well as oversized w iintegrated exhaust tips. IInside the cabin, you are greeted by top-notch materials and a world-class fit aand finish. There is ample use of leather and carbon fiber as well as high-qualitty switchgear throughout. I was surprised by the aggressive-looking sport seats tthat turned out to be quite comfortable. The cabin is tight but not overwhelmiing, even if there are two of you in the car. One thing I didn’t care for was the aawkward placement of the gear selector; this is way back on the center dash, aalmost like an afterthought. There are several storage points as well as cup holders to make things a bit more civilized. The trunk is small yet still usable h ffor a couple of small-ish weekend soft-sided bags, so the GT C Roadster is usable for travel. The soft top is well-insulated and superbly finished and goes u up and down quickly and quietly. u

So, what is it like to drive? The first thing you notice when you get comfortable in the driver’s seat is the thick-rimmed steering wheel with a complete set of buttons for everything the driver will ever need. Press the start button and a satisfying growl instantly greets your senses, you can’t help but smile every time you do that. The GT C Roadster does have a DCT (dual-clutch) seven-speed transmission which I found to be easy to live with. We didn’t notice any jerkiness, even at crawling speed and that’s a huge triumph for dual-clutch transmissions. We did do some full throttle 0-60 MPH runs in Sports+ mode and the power was simply breathtaking. That’s the cool thing about owning this car, the performance it delivers is effortless! Cornering is aggressive and flat, regardless of the speed, brakes are so powerful, it’s as if someone threw an anchor out the back. I will admit, that being a passionate lover of sports cars, the AMG-GT C Roadster felt on the upper limits of sportiness regarding ride comfort. Maybe I am becoming a softy in my middle age. The Mercedes AMG-GT C Roadster, a rolling work of art that is equally thrilling to look at as it is to drive. Now, I wonder what happened to my hat.

Captiva! You don’t have to go all the way around the world to enjoy some of the most delightful treasures of the world. 32 KB Living • July 2020

vacation destinations My family and I have had a love for this island as well as Sanibel, since some vacations back in the early eighties. Amazingly, I still remember the hotel we stayed in on Sanibel all those years ago, when I was perhaps fifteen years old. Back then I was here in the states three times a year, on vacation from boarding school in England. I remember the pool, and all the shells on the beach, and the incredible sunsets. I don’t think that hotel exists anymore, as I have tried to find it, but it was an older property even then. Our room was quite outdated and had a small efficiency and brightly colored decor. I’m pretty sure the entire place has been replaced with something newer, and much nicer. It’s ironic that all those years ago, and well before we ever met, my closest friend Carl was also there on vacation with his family from Connecticut. It’s quite possible we were all there at the same time, as the Rodgers family also used to go there regularly at both Easter as well as through the summer months. All these years later Jenn and I still very much appreciate both Sanibel, as well as Captiva and we are still going to these islands regularly, and really enjoy our week’s timeshare in the “South Sea’s Club”, as part of the “South Sea’s Resort” located on the northern end of Captiva Island. https://www.southseas.com. The west coast of Florida is so different from the Miami area, and we have always appreciated that the Sanibel and Captiva area has changed so little since Carl and I vacationed there back in the early eighties. The place is still paradise, having somehow avoided becoming commercialized, and more developed. The main dirt road in Captiva has literally not changed since 1982 and many of the restaurants are the same as well, perhaps most notably “The Mucky Duck Pub”, www.muckyduck.com which sits at the end of the street and right on the beach. It is one of the most popular places for anyone and everyone to go and watch the sunset each evening, and one of the very few English pubs in America, located right at the beach.

Further up the road are other restaurants and another favorite would be “RC Otters”, captivaislandinn.com/ captiva-island-restaurant/rc-otterseats incredible place for breakfast and also open for lunch and dinner. Just outside the resort, is the “The Bubble Room” www.bubbleroomrestaurant. com or my favorite, the Mexican restaurant on Captiva www.captivacantina.com Finally for five-star dining no visit to this area is complete without a meal at “The Mad Hatter” madhatterrestaurant.com Jenn and I had spent just one night in a small bed and breakfast in Sanibel some 20 years ago, on a sort of “delayed” honeymoon, when we came to Florida from the west coast, and also spent a few days at my parents’ apartment on Key Biscayne. On that trip, we also enjoyed the Ritz-Carlton Naples Beach for just one night and then drove up to these islands. The “South Sea’s Resort” was completely renovated after Hurricane Charley devastated that part of the Florida coast. The storm surge cut a path 400 yards wide across the narrowest part of North Captiva making it two separate islands. The new pass has no official name, but the locals call it “Charley Pass” or the “North Cap Gap” www.sanibelcaptivafishing.com The “South Sea’s Resort” was purchased “LXR” (Blackstone) and they poured money into it and the result has been the most incredible resort location for anyone that would appreciate Florida, and all the west coast has to offer. As a Property Manager what I appreciate is the vast diversity in residential management models they have there, from “Time Share” to a wonderful resort hotel, to condo-hotel, to include residential one, two, and three-bedroom residential units. They

have many homeowners associations there and because there are so many, the “amenities” are split as it relates to expenses among many different ownership entities, meaning more share in the costs and the expense to each investor is reduced. It is a huge place, that literally takes over the entire northern end of the island and even though the picture online shows only a very small part of the resort, it continues on in the distance. Captiva is a long island, stretching north to south, and the “South Sea’s Resort” takes up much of the northern end of Captiva. They have everything and anything you might need to enjoy your time there. There is an incredible 9 hole golf course, a large marina, miles of sandy beaches, (with amazing shells) jet ski rentals, parasailing, fishing charters, and guided tours of the islands. There are restaurants, and shops, including the Provisions Store, www.southseas.com/dining/ captiva-provision-company/which has everything, and some treats you don’t want to miss. Also “Doc Fords” www. docfords.com/captiva-island/ which is ideal for an amazing seafood dinner, or to watch any and all sporting events, while there. Before we ever purchased the timeshare we visited Captiva and the

“South Sea’s Resort” with my close friend Carl, and his wife Nitza. It was there that they shared with us Nitza was expecting, and they were soon to welcome baby Emma to their family. On another occasion, we were thrilled to learn that my sister would attend a medical conference at the resort, so Jenn and I were thrilled to meet up with her while there. That was such a special trip, and my sister got to experience Captiva and really learned why we have so valued the place all these years. It was on that trip that we decided to purchase the timeshare. It’s a two-bedroom in “South Sea’s Club” and overlooks the golf course and the Gulf of Mexico in the distance. It has its own pool for owners, as well as a clubhouse area by the pool and a hot tub to rest weary muscles after golfing. Since then we have returned almost every year, unless unable to make it based on work schedules, in which case, we have offered it to friends and family. Our timeshare week is in late December, so we have enjoyed being there for all the early Holiday celebrations, and then Jenn and I have typically returned to Key Biscayne to work through the holiday. Although never easy working the holidays, we have always returned relaxed and having so appreciated being there

before the holiday, as the place is empty and the weather perfect. We would golf early AM and may need a sweater for the first hour, but by 1:00 pm it would be in the mid-80s and we would relax by one of several resort pools, right next to the bay. While sitting at the Tiki Bar by the pool, we would often see dolphins passing by and jumping out of the water. The staff are also incredible and remember us each time we go. Ownership includes free golf, so we literally do the 9 hole course at least once a day. And what a course! (all Par 3, manageable even for a beginner golfer, like my wife Jenn) as it weaves through the resort. And many of the holes overlook the Gulf of Mexico, offering spectacular views. The scenery is incredible, but the view can often be a distraction to any golfer, based on the activity in the water, with everything from Tarpon, sharks, and dolphins constantly active in what is called “Red Fish Pass”. This is the small stretch of water between the northern tip of the “South Sea’s Resort” and the southern tip of what is North Captiva Island. Some of the best Tarpon fishing in America happens right there. If you are not distracted by the activity in the water, you will be by the incredible bird watching opportunities, as the golf course is home to a group of Ospreys, that constantly glide above you, as you are trying to focus on your next shot, but fascinating to watch my favorite bird of prey, as they glide and swoop, and look for food. It’s not uncommon to see them pull up a fish from the many lakes and small ponds around the course, or to see them proudly overlooking the scene from their nests atop tall poles throughout the property.

I would suggest the Ospreys are one of the many species that make the Captiva area so special. On recent visits there we have enjoyed everything from chartering a boat with a captain and exploring the island to the north, to para-sailing and getting amazing views from above, to jet skiing and enjoying a guided tour through the islands north of Captiva. On the boat charter, the captain took us “shelling” on Caya Costa, but also found us more rare “white pelicans” www.authenticflorida.com and gave us a tour of some incredible private homes on islands only accessible by boat or seaplane. The “Lady Chadwick” captivacruises.com provides daily boat tours to “Cabbage Key” cabbagekey.com and “Useppa Island” www.useppa.com/ This is a wonderful way to enjoy a relaxing day cruise, and a guided tour of the area, also to see some dolphins jumping the wake behind the boat. Cabbage Key is widely rumored to be where Jimmy Buffet wrote the lyrics for his famous song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and Useppa has an incredible history, useppahs.org as one of Florida’s most exclusive and private fishing communities. At the resort, there’s nowhere better to stop and watch the sunset than the “Attitudes”, sunset bar, https://www. southseas.com/dining/attitudes-latitudes right on the beach, and conveniently just behind the 9th (and last) hole on the golf course. Our time spent there has always been so relaxing for us and we have enjoyed all that the area, as well as the resort, have to offer. We would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Bugarim Mother, Yoga Teacher, Writer, Producer, and Founder of Shakti Activewear. “Fun fun fun … Words can’t express the joy I am having getting to know the wellness advocates for the community of Key Biscayne!” Ana Cristina The diverse culture in Key Biscayne always amuses me. In March, I participated in a fundraising event for the local nonprofit, Flying High for Haiti. The event is organized by Inés Lozano. Inez is from Spain, I am from Brazil and was invited to collaborate by my American friend, Geoffrey Bash, with a Brazilian theme party benefiting Haiti. I love it. It was at this event that I met Ana Bugarim, a businesswoman, yoga teacher, mom, and writer. Immediately I knew we would stay connected. We are from the same city and share much of our lifestyle and mindset. I asked Ana if she would be willing to share a little of her background and story so that we could get to know her better. Here are the highlights from my interview with Ana.

44 KB Living • July 2020

Ana, getting to know you has been quite interesting. Tell us about yourself and how you came to Key Biscayne.

I moved to Key Biscayne two years ago from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Though my story with the U.S. began many years ago. When I was a teenager I lived with a family in Griffin, Georgia as an exchange student. I had a chance to learn about American culture from a beautiful and loving family. Once the program was completed, I returned to Brazil and studied theater at the famous school, CAL Institute of Art and Culture in Rio. I wrote, produced, and acted in a play that was in the theater for a whole season. Being on stage inspired me to study body consciousness through dancing classes that took me to yoga and back to the U.S. I am an entrepreneur at heart. In 2000 I opened my own business of creating and selling activewear to the American market. I traveled back and forth between Brazil and the U.S. I spent much

of my time in LA where I reconnected with my artistic side. I participated in the movie He’s Just Not That into You where I was Scarlett Johansson’s yoga teacher and coach. I have lived in Santa Monica, California before. My daughter, who is 11 years old, was born there and I have dual citizenship. So why not move back to the U.S., I thought? Determined, I called some good friends to talk things over. My friends lived in Key Biscayne. They spoke highly of their community and the beautiful island they lived on. I was sold! A few months later, my friend’s husband was transferred to Texas. I rented their apartment and moved from Brazil to Key Biscayne without seeing it. What a nice surprise it turned out to be. The first time I came to Key Biscayne was the day I moved from Brazil. It was love at first sight. Destiny and friends brought me here.

Did you find yoga or did it find you? How has your life been with yoga?

My background is in the arts (theater and dance). In 1999 after finishing a professional movement course at Angel Vianna Dance School in Rio de Janeiro, I found my first job at a yoga studio. Yoga wasn’t very popular back then. I was applying to teach dance and the owner of the studio said, “You’re hired. You are our new yoga teacher!” What?! I was petrified as I told him I didn’t know any yoga. So he handed me an old book and said, “Go study it. Your next class is in a week.” I learned yoga from a book published in 1974. In 2000 I started a company in the U.S. selling Brazilian bikinis and later fitness and yoga wear (www.shaktiactivewear.com) that I still own and operate. For many years, I went on my business trips selling bikinis and practicing yoga all over the East and West Coasts.

Yoga clears the mind, strengthens the body, and makes the soul happy. I love to practice and teach yoga. I can’t imagine my life without it. How does living in Key Biscayne align with your life’s vision?

I love the ocean and nature. The parks here in Key Biscayne are incredible. I can ride my bike everywhere and my daughter can be free. It’s so nice to live in a place where you can see kids playing in the streets! How do the Key Biscayne resources and community assist in your life’s wellness?

This is the first time I’ve lived in a small community and had the pleasure of meeting people who became good friends. In 2008, when I had my daughter, I moved from California back to Rio de Janeiro to be close to my family and friends. I needed their love and support at that time. And that is exactly what I have with my friends in Key Biscayne; I know I can count on them and they can count on me. I am fully aware of how special that is. Happiness comes from the love you feel for others. In my life, I have found that the more you care for others the happier and healthier you are. To do good makes you feel good! What would you like to share with our community?

I want to share a deep breathing exercise -- pranayama breathing. Practicing it will improve your lung capacity. It is fun and you can measure your own improvement and increase the counts as you practice it. This breath exercise is also great for calming the mind and being present. Pranayama breathing instructions · Sit in a comfortable position (You can use the wall if you need to). · Close your eyes. Lengthen your spine. Observe your breath for a few seconds. · Inhale and exhale through your nose. · Slowly start to give a rhythm to your breath: inhale for 4 counts, hold the breath in 4 counts, exhale 4 counts and hold empty breath lungs, 4 counts. · Suggested time: 15 minutes but you can start wherever you are and build up. I am a mother, yoga teacher, writer, producer, and founder of Shakti Activewear. Originally from Rio de Janeiro, I have been teaching yoga for 20 years, teaching at Hot Yoga Brickell and private classes in the Key Biscayne area. When not teaching and practicing yoga I am working on my online store www.shaktiaw.com, writing plays and poems, or enjoying Key Biscayne. MASAI MARKET AND SAMBURU GAME RESERVE ...Then it was off to the Masai market, which would prove quite an experience. The people at the Masai market were friendly and it was impressive to watch my mother haggle prices down from 1700 to 300 shillings in just minutes. We bought all sorts of trinkets, pashminas, and blankets, mainly as gifts. My father carefully haggled down the price on a huge wooden giraffe, which we now have in our living room. At the compound on the coffee plantation my father managed, we immediately noticed all the flowers and green foliage around the house. We received the most wonderful welcome from the staff, who greeted us with singing, dancing, and playing the drums. The next morning we were awakened by a loud black ibis bird that announced himself each morning at about 6:15! Then it was off to the Sheldrick Animal Orphanage and Wildlife Trust (https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org), which has appeared on the TV show Elephant Diaries as

50 KB Living • July 2020

well as many of the Big Cat Diaries. The orphaned elephants ranged in age from 3 months old to several years old. Then, off to see the giraffes! On Tuesday morning we headed to Samburu Intrepids, north of Nairobi (https://www.heritage-eastafrica.com/samburuintrepids). Our safari was about to begin! We were all up very early to catch our flight out of the Nairobi airport, to Samburu Game Reserve, where we would spend the next few nights. As soon as we landed, I saw a gazelle from the window of the plane. Our safari had begun! Then we were off to the Intrepids Lodge, where we would be staying for the next two nights! That drive really was the start of our safari, and we saw many more animals each morning and evening. I was so pleased that we would see so many animals that could only be seen in Samburu. As we drove along the small dirt road, we passed many animals on the way, including lots of dik-diks, which were like a miniature version of Bambi. We also saw many impalas, and then in the distance, we saw an oryx, which was one of several animals found only in that part of Kenya, along with the Gravies zebra, and also the gerenuk, and the reticulated giraffe. We saw such a giraffe on the way to

the camp. There was also the lion ant and the buffalo weaver bird. Within about twenty minutes we arrived at the Intrepids Lodge and were warmly welcomed to the resort. It was built on stilts, and the walkways were of a lovely dark wood. Game drives took place at 6:30 am and 4 pm. These would be the best times to actually view the game. Tame monkeys were scurrying around everywhere. The accommodations were fascinating and luxurious. They were essentially tents, built, and pitched on a platform on stilts. However, the floor of the tent was concrete, which allowed for a fully functional bathroom, with a proper shower, toilet, and two washbasins. The rooms or tents (I should say) had all the amenities one might expect in any five-star property, from the shampoos, the soaps, the writing paper, and a very nice desk, and listing of hotel services. Our tent even had a four-poster bed! We were pleased to find no phone and no TV.

We were looking forward to being completely cut off from the rest of the world. The beds were certainly not the folding camp beds I had expected, but instead, were made of dark wood, with beautifully draped mosquito netting, which, being neatly tied back, added to their elegant appearance. That evening we saw many baboons by the river’s edge, more giraffes, and many more dik-diks and impala, both male (with the horns.) and female without the horns. We also saw some cheetahs from a distance. We saw many elephants, and as we got closer we backed up the land rover right where the elephants were coming up over the ridge. It just so happened that the one elephant was huge, and my mother was dangerously right in front of him. I noticed our driver kept the engine running, in case we needed to make a quick getaway. These were the first elephants we saw, but within the next day or so we saw many more. That morning on the game drive we saw buffalo, many of them quite large. We also saw waterbuck and more elephants. Someone spotted a leopard in a tree. A very large sleepy cat, with his paws hanging over the branches, the leopard was spooked by a nearby baboon, and quickly came down the tree and disappeared into the bush. We also saw a Nile River crocodile in the shallow waters of the dirty river. He was small but quite visible even from a distance. We were ready again for the game drive at 4 pm. This time we saw zebras, regular zebras as well as the Gravies zebras, which are not quite the same size, and their stripes are slightly thinner. That evening we had a bush dinner which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip, as just the four of us got to sit under the stars. The food was amazing and they had laid it all on just for us. It was one of those special evenings I will never forget. Just the four of us laughing, joking, and singing with these lovely friendly people, who could not have been more different from us, and we could not have been further from home, and yet they were so friendly and genuine. It was such a delight to be there, under a blanket of bright stars.

Early the next morning was our last game drive and we really wanted to see some lions. A lioness was seen walking down a dry riverbed nearby. We raced to the location and drove along the top of the ridge. For just a brief moment, I could see her, between the trees and her little cubs padding along behind her. For the next forty minutes, we watched and waited as she made her way down the river bed. After letting the cubs rest briefly, again they were off. The cubs were obviously tired and wanted to lay down and sleep, but she kept them moving on. It was a perfect way to end an incredible trip. We were all smiles as we headed back to camp where we would prepare for the final adventures of our Africa trip. To be continued next month...
