Aurora Borealis Dwelling/Observatory Design a group of small, simple dwelling units to be located in a forest near Rovaniemi, Finland. The project is an adaptation taken from a student competition sponsored by ARCHMedium. The project calls for the design of an Aurora Borealis Arctic Observatory. The proposed dwelling units and observatory would allow visitors to take a step back and reect on the beauty of the Aurora Borealis.

Engine Company 99 Design a firehouse to accommodate three shifts of 14 firemen for Engine Company 99. The site for Engine Company 99 will be located at 601 Dearborn St. in the Printer’s Row neighborhood of Chicago. Critical investigation will begin with the relationship between the City of Chicago and its fire stations. Spaces will begin to generate shape based on the activities they house and their relationships to the site.

Makers Lab In order to revitalize the Back of the Yards neighborhood and reconnect the community to Chicago, a hub needs to be created that will activate the neighborhood and draw people to the Back of the Yards. Our goal is to provide the neighborhood with a platform for exploration, innovation, and collaboration through an open source marketplace. The creation of an open source marketplace will give people an opportunity to learn new skills, share ideas, and fabricate products. The presence of an abandoned elevated train line would be used in conjuncture with the open source marketplace. The elevated structure would be used to create a public greenspace that would offer a safe, uninterrupted trail for walking, biking, picnicking, and relaxation. As a result, our group designed the Makers Lab for the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The Makers Lab is a hybrid project that: Creates a live/work facility for individuals interested in making and selling products or services Revitalizes an abandoned railroad line to serve as a safe route/elevated greenspace
