Statement
How can digital fabrication techniques redefine the form of the tea house, while respecting its cultural mores?

We analyzed the essential elements of a two-tatami tea house to generate a new parametric form.

Each part of the ceremony— participants, fixtures, and the tea itself—influences a regular panelized system. The wall panels define an introverted space for tea while displaying the ceremony to the public. Eight students from GSAPP at Columbia University traveled to Tokyo to design and build this tea house.
道具類やお茶自体、茶道を構成する伝統 的決まりごと等の意味合いを、ごく一般的 な羽目板の造形物に反映させました。
壁であるパネルは、一般の人々が外部から セレモニーとしてのお茶を透視できると同 時に、お茶の内部的な空間を外部と区別 しているのです。
コロンビア大学のGSAPPからの8人の生 徒は、上記の深い意味合いを持つ茶室設 計を試みるべく、東京に赴いたのです。
