Michel Archambault drawings 2018 - 2019
Parallel to his practice as a sculptor, Archambault organized exhibitions as curator and designer often in the form of site-specific projects. He collaborated with practitioners from different field for his sound installations with electro-acoustic music, and opening in 1997, of the nonfor-profit Center 200m3 architecture & satellites in Montréal, exhibiting International/National projects of Architects Rem Koolhaas, Arakawa & Gins. While living in Berlin, he created a series of videos that involved the fusion of sound & image integrated into sculptural installations (Oasis, Centre Expression, SaintHyacinthe 1997). Following a residency in India in 2002, his approach focussed uniquely on the form (Artist in Residence, L’Usine C, 2005-2006_Archipel, Parisian Laundry Gallery 2006). In the last decade, his photographic work has underlined social behavior sourced from architecture, advertising and fashion (Light of India, Galerie Thérèse Dion 2005_Carte Blanche Magenta Foundation 2006). In 2008, revisiting his past through the mix and reprocessing of cultural elements ranging from underground music scene, psychedelic culture, and travels in Asia
and the Middle East (Afghanistan, India, Iran, Israel and Turkey), he worked on a 3d production associated with the use of different raw materials and re-activated his interest in sound with Century II, a motorized sound installation exhibited at La Maison de la Culture Frontenac in April 2011. Over the past years he participated in collective and solos exhibitions that include Centre Circa, (2007), Galerie de l’UQAM (2008), Musée d’art de Joliette (2008), Occurrence Center (2009), Grande Bibliothèque, Montréal (2010), Clark Center (2010), Espace Studio 1, Maison Frontenac (2011), Axe Néo7 (2015), and Occurrence Center (2016). Archambault’s work has been generously supported by: The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Le Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, and the Canada Council for the Arts, and is included in public and private collections.
Michel Archambault drawings 2018 - 2019
In a direct, simple manner, the association of drawing and sculpture in the work of Archambault, is no accident, they are both means to and end; a sense of longing for freedom, and for the edge. Between thinking and being, Drawing, his night companion, is free-spirited, offering possibilities, opening and revealing new means. Between figuration, and abstraction, a form of anatomical exploration builds up where by putting the edge of the pen gently, and at times using small strokes, bleeding unto the paper, creating at different intervals or pauses, movements of ideas mixed together translating an act of drawing. Maybe like Roberto Matta, his approach to drawing is an automatic process as he referred to as Morphologies psychologiques. Louise delorme, 2015
