Thanks to Evangelia’s grit, Dimitra Beach Hotel was built on Kos in 1991, with her son Michel Lysgaris, fresh from the prestigious GLION Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland. Kos can dazzle visitors with its scent of history, enchant them with the breathtaking view of its coastline and peaks, bewitch them with the taste of its tradition.

So, you have found yourself on Kos Island, in the Aegean Sea. Congratulations are in order. This is no ordinary destination; hand on my heart, I can assure you that you have chosen wisely. On the diverse Greek map, among a list of island destinations that are far from humble, Kos deservedly holds its own unique place.

Shall I try, like a true guide, stating numbers first? 37.089 permanent residents, a surface area of 295.3 square kilometres and a coastline of 112 kilometres. The third largest island of the Dodecanese region comes second in terms of population. If islands went on trips and Kos had to go through passport control in the airport, that would be the personal information the person doing the check would read. And what impression would it make? Absolutely none. So it’s just as well that it’s us who are on our way to make the acquaintance of the islands which, blissfully still and surrounded by sea, are waiting to welcome us. Just as well, because the enchanting identity of any land never resides or can be revealed in numbers. Can I claim the privilege of trying to fit as much as I can into words?

Allow me to invite you on a fantastic ride, to offer you a foretaste of what you will enjoy, with all senses, during your stay here. Kos can dazzle the visitor with its scent of history (the place was inhabited from Neolithic times; its tale begins all the way back from 5th-4th millennium BC), enchant them with the breathtaking view of its coastline and peaks, bewitch them with the taste

of its tradition. Omnipresent, the caress of the sun and the caress of the sea - both trademarks of the Greek summer. Ever-present, the song of the island’s thermal springs, merging with the melody of Nature.

If you are in for some physical and mental exercise, there are two ways to discover the island of Kos: (a) on foot, since the island features ideal conditions for hiking enthusiasts, (b) riding the bike of your choice. Kos has been widely known as the “island of cycling”, and not without reason. With more than 15 kilometres of cycle paths along the coast, 6,500 bikes available for hire, many mountain trails and routes for all levels, cycling is the ultimate way to see the island’s sights. The strong cycling culture dates back to the Italian occupation and the systematic use of bicycles by Italian soldiers, which was subsequently adopted by the locals as it seemed a good choice considering the island’s morphology. Iconic Greek films of the 1960s show movie stars cycling along the Boulevard of Palms. Since then, cycling has been a popular activity for locals and visitors alike. The scent of history permeates the entire island, and the town of Kos is no exception. Its architecture echoes with the historical diversity, as alongside the colonial-style Italian buildings there are low white island houses, Muslim mosques, knights’ walls, apartment blocks, and restored ancient public buildings.

Kos was considered the ultimate healing centre of the ancient world. The scenery is undeniably fascinating: the rich flora and fauna, the picturesque mountain villages, and the diverse architecture are just some of the delightful touches of the land.

The town’s architectural diversity echoes with the history of the land. Alongside the colonial-style Italian buildings there are low white island houses, Muslim mosques, knights’ walls, apartment blocks and restored ancient public buildings.

KOS IS A RARE ARTEFACT MEANT TO STUN THOSE IN LOVE WITH THE ART OF TRAVELLING. LEAN IN AND LISTEN TO THE WHISPERS OF AN ISLAND THAT’S BOTH ANCIENT AND YOUNG.

of Kos: the municipal market, the club, and the Archaeological Museum, which was built in 1935. Do not neglect to honour the latter with a visit. It is home to an excellent collection, which includes prehistoric finds, sculptures, and mosaic floors from the Roman buildings of the ancient city. Coming out of the museum, let your gaze glimpse the edge of the square, where the Deftar Mosque keeps the secrets of a different version of Kos. In the historical centre, we will become time travellers. To begin with, we will take our time wandering through the market place. Onwards to the Doric Hellenistic temple, where we will admire the altar of Dionysus, the port arcade, and the sanctuary of Hercules. We will tour the remains of the northern side of the wall, as well as the Roman baths, and let our imagination recreate the Roman Conservatory and the luxurious villas with their rich mosaic floors.

We will walk through Platanos Square- or “Loggia Square”- and stop at the Loggia Mosque to observe the embedded pieces of ancient and medieval monuments that can be seen in its walls. Now, it is time to rest in the shadow of Hippocrates’ plane tree. Kos was considered the ultimate healing centre of the ancient world and it was there that Hippocrates, the most famous physician of ancient Greece, founded his medical school. Kos, named after the daughter of the mythical King Merops, is often described as an openair museum, and rightly so. Offering dozens of outdoor archaeological sites and many cultural events throughout the year, the homeland of the “father of medicine” Hippocrates (460-377 BC), is also home to the ancient Asclepieion. At this most emblematic monument that survives to this day, the inspirer of the Hippocratic Oath practiced and taught his medicine. Contributing to the promotion of Hippocrates’ philosophy, the Asclepieion of Kos was a religious sanctuary dedicated to the god Asclepius (ancient Greek god of medicine and son of Apollo).

Kos is an island where diversity is also evident in the natural environment. Salt ponds, wetlands, pine forests, plane and eucalyptus trees, volcanic hot springs, and an easy hiking mountain 846 metres high, make up a rich and fascinating destination that is definitely worth exploring. Apart from the easily accessible, well- maintained trails, a lovely bonus is that one can combine hiking with visiting sites of both natural and historical interest. The scenery is undeniably fascinating: the rich flora and fauna, the picturesque mountain villages, and the diverse architecture are just some of the delightful touches of the land. Taking a stroll through the Plaka Forest in Antimachia, after visiting one of the most famous traditional settlements of Kos and of all the Dodecanese, first inhabited at the end of the Neolithic era, you will find yourself admiring dozens of exotic peacocks and cats living in harmony. And if you wish for serenity, then the forest of Panagia Tsoukalaria, on the outskirts of the island, is just the place to catch your breath and rest.

One of the most famous hiking trails is the one in Paleo Pyli. Walking through the forest, this trail is located about three kilometres southeast of Pyli, at an altitude of 300 metres, where you will find the ruins of a medieval fortified Byzantine settlement - as well as the castle of the same name (Paleo Pyli) - both built in the 11th century. Up for one-of-a-kind, picturesque architecture? 14 kilometres from the town of Kos lies the most beautiful settlement of the island. Consisting of five villages in total (Lagoudi, Evaggelistria - or Pera Geytonia - Asomatos, Agios Dimitrios - or Haichoutes - and Zia), this architectural ensemble based on the agricultural economy of the 19th and early 20th century is unique in the Dodecanese. Zia is also the starting point for an epic hiking trail, the one that leads to the top of Mount Dikeos. Formerly known as Oromedon, Orion, or Dikeon, the highest mountain in Kos, with an altitude of 846 metres, features a majestic cross

KOS IS AN ISLAND WHERE DIVERSITY IS ALSO EVIDENT IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. A LOVELY BONUS IS THAT ONE CAN COMBINE HIKING - OR RIDING - WITH VISITING SITES OF BOTH NATURAL AND HISTORICAL INTEREST.

and picturesque little chapel dedicated to Christ on top. For the locals, the climb to this peak is a ritual on the eve of the feast of Christ on August 5 (celebrated on August 6). Every year dozens of people arrive at the top to honour the chapeland the most daring ones even stay overnight. Here the hiker is compensated by a truly breathtaking view and, when the skies are clear, one can gaze from above at Pserimos, Gyali, Nisyros, and Kardamena. And if, after the descent, you feel like a well-deserved pampering, this truly blessed place offers the cathartic experience of the thermal springs. There are three types of thermal springs on Kos: hot, hypothermic and cold. The natural hot springs at Therma are one of the most stunning locations on the island. It was discovered in 1936 by an Italian archaeologist, but it’s result of tectonic hypothermic, and volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. This beach takes its name from the word “thermos” - because of the hot springs that have been gushing out for centuries, offering today the ultimate experience of a natural, outdoor spa! The wild and volcanic natural environment provides a stunning backdrop of massive cliffs, scattered trees, rugged creeks, and black pebbles.

Another way to re-fuel ourselves before diner time - or even take a truly hydrating break through the day - is to visit a local aloe vera farm. Here, the miraculous natural juices are used to create a variety of refreshments and products: 100% organically grown aloe vera meets orange and pomegranate juice to create a pure, natural dietary supplement, preserving only the valuable nutrients of the beneficial plant. And if you want to take a little extra care of yourself, let me assure you, there is no better feeling than indulging in natural face and body care after a long day under the Mediterranean sun. If you identify yourself as a farm-lover, constantly looking for “farm-to-table” experiences, why not add a wine tasting, or a visit to sample some of the Aegean’s finest honey at a family-run bee farm to our itinerary? Tomorrow, we can tour the isle’s vineyards and walk among the season’s harvest. But now, after a full day, let us unwind. There is a Greek saying “A way to a person’s heart is through his stomach”. By now, I am sure that Kos Island has won you over - yet we are still in for a treat! Kos dishes, always offered with a generous dose of genuine Greek hospitality, are prepared using the precious treasures of the Kos land, generously offered by the fertile soils and rich Aegean Sea. The island’s rich volcanic soil and its Mediterranean climate have contributed to the creation of several products of high nutritional value and the production of a few, but unique, indigenous varieties of wine which are the perfect match for earthy, delicious delights. The gastronomic tradition of Kos has been shaped by many cultures and civilisations over the centuries. Ottoman and Italian influences are mixed with Aegean recipes, resulting in a truly inspired version of the Greek cuisine which remains, to the day, true to the island’s identity, traditions and, most importantly, its people. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adrenaline, whether you’re a beach or mountain lover, whether you wish to lose yourself in the modern reality or look for what the eons have crafted in this part of the Aegean, Kos is a rare artefact meant to stun those in love with the art of traveling. Lean in and listen to the whispers of an island that’s both ancient and young. Apart from getting to know another part of this wide world, you might discover something new about yourself. •

In 2018, Konstantinos Sofikitis and his brother Petros, started Historiography of the Aegean, a photographic and cinematographic journey focusing on unpublished stories of people, endangered professions, forgotten customs and traditions, and stories of generosity, love, heartbreak, survival, and humanity. The purpose of their journey was to understand and observe Greece and its people as they really are. An observation that requires humility, respect, time, and a genuine curiosity for knowledge. Because “people are neither a museum species nor attractions.”

Thus begins the story of Marabou Project. In a few months, an effort of 6 years of recording the 70 inhabited islands of the Aegean will be completed and presented through a scrapbook and final documentary. The combination of verbal and visual narratives, both in the illustrated album and in the travelling exhibition, intends to keep the memory of the images alive forever.

Stelios Kostoglou: The Mountain Melodist of Kos.

THE PURPOSE OF THEIR JOURNEY WAS TO UNDERSTAND AND OBSERVE GREECE AND ITS PEOPLE AS THEY REALLY ARE.

He fell into darkness. He fell into rivers. He fought, but he still stands. He is here. “I am just getting to the best part of life,” says Stelios Kostoglou –and he’s already 85 years old. No normal road leads to his house. He lives high on the mountain, in the house his father built in 1939. He has no electricity, but he doesn’t need it. He wakes up with the morning light. He goes to bed when the darkness of night conquers all – just as he learned as a child. “When I was a boy, there weren’t any lights at night; people didn’t need them, as the sun was their life.” He hasn’t left this place or Kos, except for his two years of soldiering.

He inherited the animals from his father. But it’s hard now. It’s not raining, and the grass is dry. He has played the lyre since he was a boy. At six, he persuaded a musician to lend him his lyre for a bit, so that he could see how its strings made sounds. Slowly he learned himself. He started with simple tunes, old tunes – and he learned them well. Then, he began to be invited to feasts, dances, and even weddings. Now, he has a pinavli (handmade pastoral flute of Kos) in his hands and blows, playing as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “Pinavli is a tool,” he says, “for the animals to hear at night, but it’s also a pastime for the player. There’s an art to playing it, but also making it right from good reeds. It’s a sweet sound; it’s a companion.” Stelios made his by hand, so it’s an extension of his soul. The same goes for dancing; he was a dance teacher once. Whenever there was a festival, he was the first to attend.

He’s all alone up here, but he’s got it all. Despite the difficulties, he feels he’s had a good time in life, having four children and six grandchildren. In the evenings, when night falls, he’s got his music to keep him company. “I’m alone in life, and I’m having a good time. I’ve got my lyre, and we stand by each other.”

KALYMNOS: MIKES CASTRINOS

His grandfather and father had their hands full

with the carbine factory, where Mikes himself had been shoved as a lad, as soon as he finished fourth grade. Eighty of the one hundred trebuchets in the harbour today were probably made by his hands. Mikes Castrinos has been a shipwright for a lifetime, yet he still spends each and every day working with wood. He has, of course, made himself a boat. Her name is Zacharulamade of pine, a wood he declares ideal for building a strong ship.

“If one dips the pine wood in water, takes it out, and dips it again, once or twice “to burn” the wood, it can then last a hundred years.”

Mikes learned the craft by experience, alongside his father, but he developed it further thanks to a thorough knowledge of geometry – knowledge he picked up with his lieutenant when he served in the Navy. He is proud of his son, who is also engaged in the craft passed down to him. “It is a craft you can serve only if you truly love it, because it is very difficult and doesn’t pay well anymore. Nowadays, it seems that factories can do it all. Everything in life can be hard – even eating can be hard – but if you really want it, whatever it is that you do, you learn. Whatever you want, you can learn.” •

Musical echoes: Tunes of Kos through the ages

Join us on a journey through the musical tapestry of Kos, where the strains of ancient tunes intertwine with the rhythms of modernity.

In the town of Kos, right at the entrance of the port, stands the Castle of the Knights –or Castle of “Nerantzia”. At the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, Kos was densely planted with bergamot (“nerantzi” in greek) and lemon trees – hence the name given to this part of the knightly fortification. Today, though, we are visiting this place to find a dedicatory inscription, engraved on a greyish dark marble base, 0.98x0.38 in size, which reads in translation:

“… Manasimachus, son of Pethanor, who defeated the older children twice (competing) in singing with guitar accompaniment, dedicated the prize he won to the Muses.” There is plenty of proof suggesting that the Koans (or “Cosians”, if you like) were more than passionate about music. In fact, we are talking about a kind of artistic fascination that prevailed on the island since antiquity, especially among young islanders. Apollo and the Muses were considered the patrons of schools and the fine arts, which is why they were worshipped with special splendour in this part of the Mediterranean. The theatres and conservatories, which the archaeological excavation has brought to light, also provide us with convincing evidence of the performance of the Cosians in theatre and music competitions. Orpheus, who with the sweet sounds of his lyre enchants and tames all

the wild animals of nature, has been found to star as the dominating figure in amazing mosaics –the most impressive of which was found during the excavations of German archaeologist Rudolf Herzog (who was obliged to analyse and send it in 1904 to the Museum of Constantinople at the request of the Turks). Even on Kos coins, we find the lyre, a symbol of music and poetry. Recent research by the Institute of Mediterranean Studies on the musicians of ancient Greece states that inscriptions confirmed the names of 21 musicians of national fame from the island of Kos. This was more than the musicians of other larger islands, such as Cyprus, Crete, Lesbos, Chios, Samos, and Rhodes. So, ancient Kos, as in other artistic fields, performed brilliantly in its musical tradition.

From the epigraphic lists of the winners of the musical contests of the ‘Great Asclepion’, let us leap forward in time. Long foreign conquests (by the Ottomans until 1912 and the Italians until 1943), the distance from the Greek mainland, and the proximity and constant communication of Kos with Asia Minor (until the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922) made for a unique mix of cultural (and, hence, musical) influences. Another element, which is of particular value in this case, is the island’s closed agro-pastoral character, with its productive wealth and selfsufficiency. The aforementioned geophysical

and historical facts effectively helped to preserve in Kos a great, constantly growing, oral culture (especially in music) until modern times, with deep roots and rich remains, reaching back to late Byzantium.

Authentic demotic music, the melody of the countryside, is mainly vocal and soloistic, unlike urban but similar to ecclesiastical music. Instrumental music, usually performed by two instruments (violin and lute), was intended for formal group entertainment (weddings, festivals, and other special events). It was necessary for certain dances. On all other occasions, the dominant element was no other than the human voice. Everyone sang everywhere, alone or together, while working or travelling, in cafes or evening gatherings (especially in winter), at every moment of their lives. This monodic soloistic utterance is, in essence, the unadulterated municipal tradition.

The end of this historical reality would come in the crucial decade between the 1960s and 1970s. By then, Kos was receiving, along with crowds of European visitors, western musical influences. The first discos made their appearance on the island in the 80s. They were to become legendary (until ‘96 Kos was considered one of the best places in Europe for nightlife) and - not coincidentally - the most famous of them all was named Apollo... •

100 years have passed since Nikolaos Hatziemmanouil revived winemaking in Kos, starting from the stone winery located in Marmaroto. How has the family’s passion for wine changed?

The passion for wine has remained unchanged over the years. Our love for viticulture and wine production never wavers and even grows as it passes from generation to generation. We ensure continuous advancement in the field, leading to the improvement of the quality and taste of our products. Our goal is to follow innovative techniques that lead to higherquality wines. This commitment to excellence ensures that our passion for wine remains alive and dynamic, constantly giving wine lovers new reasons to enjoy this art and gastronomic delight.

How did the transition happen, from the late 1950s and the production of sweet wine by Kostas Hatziemmanouil, son of Nikolaos, to the professional engagement of Vassilis Hatziemmanouil, the founder’s grandson, in viticulture and winemaking?

My professional journey in winemaking began by drawing inspiration from my family’s heritage. From a young age, I learned to care for the vineyard from my father. In 1998, we produced our first dry wine from the Greek varieties Malagousia and Assyrtiko. Seeing the success of our wines, in 1999, we renovated the existing winery to obtain a bottling license. The steadily increasing demand led us to expand our vineyard. In 2004, we built the new winery located on the provincial road of Kos, in Asfendiou.

How important is the proper care of the vines and the continuous presence of the family to support the vineyards?

Proper vine care and the family’s presence in the vineyard are crucial for the quality and success of our viticulture. Care ensures healthy plants and rich production, while the family passes on knowledge and traditions, strengthening our bond with the land and wine production.

When was the first label released by the Hatziemmanouil family?

The first wine label released was a white Malagousia - Assyrtiko blend in 2000. What grape varieties do you cultivate, and where are your vineyards located on the island?

We consider it important to fully utilise the unique characteristics of the region to produce quality and balanced wines. The varieties we cultivate are mainly of Greek origin. Specifically, for white wines, we use the varieties Malagousia, Assyrtiko, and Kydonitsa. For our red and rosé wines, we use international varieties such as Grenache Rouge, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. What are your goals for the coming years? Our goals for the coming years focus mainly

on constant improvement and innovation in wine production. We want to maintain the high quality of our products and expand our range with new varieties and wine styles.

What is the best time for a visitor to come and experience your winery and vineyards?

The best time for a visitor to come and experience our winery and vineyards depends on their preferences and the experience they want to have. For example, visiting during the harvest season is an excellent choice. During this period, visitors can see our work in the vineyards, from grape harvesting to winemaking. Of course, we aim to offer the best possible experience to our visitors at any time of the year. •

The Knights of St. John even built Chrysocheria Castle, its ruins still encompassing the church of Panagia Chrysochera and overlooking Chorio village, the island’s former capital.

But Kalymnos is best known for its sponge diving industry, a centuries-old tradition passed

down through the generations. Merchants and sea captains made their fortunes on Kalymnos and displayed their wealth through their beautiful homes. Neoclassical and Italian styles still dot key areas like Chorio, Vathy, and Pothia. Kalymnos left its unique mark on the 20th century, too, after its sponge divers inspired a folk song that became globally famous in the 70s. Dirlada was first written by Captain Pantelis Ginnis about his crew, its lyrics a playful satire. Greek sailors sang it as they travelled the world, and the catchy tune spread like wildfire to France, Japan, and beyond.

Most routes are single-pitch of around 20 to 35m, the majority of which are in the midgrade range 6a - 6c. The development of longer alpine-style routes from 3 to 11 pitches has increased over the past few years. The most spectacular thing about Kalymnos, though, is the volume of high-quality routes at every grade and every crag! Whether you are a beginner or a pro, there are many choices for everyone! A Journey Through the Maritime Museum's Rich History

The museum’s collection offers a comprehensive look at the techniques, tools, and traditions associated with sponge diving. Step into its five rooms to encounter a wealth of artifacts, from ancient shipwreck remnants to diving equipment used since the 19th century. Marvel at “skandalopetres,” stones used to aid divers’ descent, alongside tools for sponge processing and maritime instruments like sextants and compasses. Dive deeper into the past through a captivating display of

photographs documenting Kalymnos’ social fabric intertwined with sponge catching. Admire anchors crafted from stone, lead, and iron, peruse nautical charts dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and marvel at ship rigging and cannonballs recovered from the sea. Miniature boats and lanterns further evoke the island’s seafaring legacy. Pokinima

Preparing for the long journey, lasting 7-8 months, was a small rite of passage for the sponge divers. Let’s relive it...

What happens when a whole island prepares for the departure of those who venture out to catch sponges on the coasts of Africa?

The sailing preparation (called “Pokinima”) on Kalymnos lasted almost two months - February to March - and set the whole island on fire. The captains picked crew members; tools of the trade were feverishly gathered; and supplies (“kubani”) were carefully prepared: galettes, “kavourmas” (sautèed meat), pulses, salted fish in sacks, and plenty of water in barrels. Pokinima took place the day after the Resurrection, and the journey, mainly to the coast of Africa, lasted 7 to 8 months. Before departure, all measures to ensure the favour of the spiritual world were taken. Holy water was as necessary as any other supply, while the captain and sponge divers had to invoke the grace of St. Nicholas, the patron saint and guide of the divers.

Today, Pokinima is a historical event. Organised by the Municipality of Kalymnos, the Region of South Aegean, and the Kalymnos District Council, it presents locals and visitors alike with a series of re-enactments and theatrical performances drawn from the island’s history. During the events, scenes and stories of departure are presented in collaboration with the island’s theatrical groups. Pokinima contains de facto elements of tragedy. Back then, the farewell that took place was particularly difficult, since many of the sponge divers were highly unlikely to return, due to the conditions in which they worked, while others, in many cases, would return with serious health problems, usually paralysed. When the sponge boats returned, the Kalymnians counted their losses. There were indeed many victims, most of whom were buried on deserted coasts or islands in Africa.

Those lucky enough to visit Kalymnos during early August also have the opportunity to witness mostly realistic re-enactments of how a boat was prepared for the long journey, how the supplies and general equipment of the sponge divers were packed, and even how a diver would don the profession’s traditional uniform. If you attend, make sure you try the traditional “kavourmas” (veal cooked in its fat to be preserved and taken on board for the sailors to eat). The well-known recipe, which the sponge workers took with them on their months-long

journey, is always served at the feast that follows the Pokinima events.

Sponge diving with all its traditions and history still forms the very soul of Kalymnos Island. Another celebration, Sponge Week, takes place one week after Easter each year. It is dedicated to honouring the relationship between the Kalymnians and the sponge, which is also known as the “Kalymnian Gold”. Local musicians perform Aegean tunes, playing for hours while people of all ages join tradition -

Natural sponges (Euspongia) occur in various regions around the world, especially where the sea waters are warm and the currents mild. Classifying sponges by defining their composition was a riddle that fascinated people since antiquity; Aristotle was the first to suggest that this “strange creature” is an animal. Indeed, sponges are the most simple, multicellular animal organisms. And yet, during their 20-50-year life circle, they embellish the underwater landscape with an impressive variety of colours and shapes.

In the geographical index of Greece, Kalymnos could be considered the absolute source of sponges. In the mid-19th century, all of the Dodecanese (as well as Hydra, Poros, Aegina, Salamina, Ermioni, Trikeri, and Lemnos) pro

to the increased demand in industrialised Europe. Yet it was Kalymnos, along with Symi, that gained worldwide fame as the home of sponge divers and workers. The Greek term “sfougarades” directly translates as “spongers.” For the Kalymnians, sponge hunting became a source of livelihood – a dangerous mission that only the skilled and daring could accomplish.

The long-standing tradition of sponging defined the island’s identity and contributed significantly to the economic prosperity of its inhabitants. Κalymnian traders sold their precious harvest, starting from Syros, Nafplio, and Constantinople and reaching Odessa, Petersburg, Moscow, Trieste, and the Middle East. The first references to the “sponger” profession appear in the epic poetry of Homer, followed by later

The job of spongers was not limited to diving and fishing the sponges from the depths of the sea. It included operating the mechanical equipment to assist the divers, as well as handling their precious catch.

The processing of the sponge began immediately after it was fished out of the sea, meaning that the first stages of the job were done on board. What came first was the trampling and washing of the sponges with seawater to remove most of their membrane, contents (or “milk”), and any trapped foreign bodies (sand, stones, microbes, symbiotic crustaceans). The sponges were then left in the sun under a linen tarpaulin to rest before the aforementioned process was repeated. Next came the beating of the sponges, usually done with flat and smooth branches to avoid damaging the sea animal’s body, followed by a nighttime ritual. Only under the realm of darkness were the sponges, attached to ropes, thrown into the sea so that the waves and currents could wash away any remnants of “milk.”

Recovered in the morning, they were examined meticulously to determine if another round of processing was necessary. If so, the same steps were repeated again and again. Once the sponges were thoroughly cleaned, they were given the green light and spread out to dry in the sun. They literally sunbathed on a beach or the ship’s rigging.

Often, depending on the knowledge of the crew and the time available, a rough classification was carried out on board. Upon returning ashore, the batch was presented to traders. The latter took the sponges to their warehouses, which were the laboratories for further processing.

The irresistible rhythm of the sponge-diving song, “Darla Dirladada”

During the 1970s, “Darla Dirladada” attained widespread fame as the foremost Greek song, despite being rendered in various other languages. Its composition is credited to Pantelis Ginis, the captain of a sponge-diving vessel hailing from Kalymnos. Unbeknownst to Ginis at the time, the lighthearted melody, conceived amidst the rigours of maritime life, would evolve into an international sensation.

Originally crafted to uplift the spirits of his crew during their arduous endeavours, “Darla Dirladada” swiftly gained traction among seafarers before captivating a broader audience. As Greek maritime crews traversed foreign shores, they carried this infectious tune with them, endowing it with a global appeal.

To fully appreciate the lyrics, even for those proficient in Greek, it is essential to grasp certain aspects of sponge divers’ lives and their working conditions. Sponge divers embarked on their voyages to the North African coasts, commonly referred to as “Barbaria,” setting off at Easter and returning at the end of October. They utilised a large vessel known as the “Rezerva” for storing provisions, housing the harvested sponges, and gathering for their daily meal. Sponge diving itself was conducted using smaller boats predominantly propelled by oars. Consequently, sponge divers toiled under the scorching African sun throughout the day, often enduring meagre provisions of tepid, rusty water, with nothing but the vast expanse of the open sea surrounding them. It was not uncommon for their resolve to wane over time, as thoughts turned towards home, sustenance, and the companionship they had been deprived of for so long.

The essence of “Dirlada” lay in its capacity to uplift the spirits of sponge divers and instil a rhythmic cadence in their rowing efforts. It achieved

this by imaginatively transporting them back to Kalymnos and conjuring visions of the comforts and desires they longed for during these trying times. The song’s lyrics, imbued with humour and a touch of bawdiness, reflect the lives of sea farers and island dwellers, particularly those from Kalymnos renowned for their sponge-div ing exploits. Yet, it is the irresistible rhythm, purportedly influenced by North African musi cal traditions, that distinguishes the song. Legend has it that Ginis, while steering his ves sel, simultaneously penned the lyrics, a testa ment to his creativity and multitasking prow ess. Subsequently, Ginis ventured to Athens to record the song with esteemed Greek musician Domna Samiou. However, it was Mikis Theo dorakis who, after hearing “Darla Dirladada,” featured it in his album “The Garden,” initial ly misrepresenting it as a traditional piece. Gi nis pursued legal recourse, establishing his authorship of the song. Following his premature demise, the song’s copyright passed to his family in Kalymnos.

In 1970, Italian-Egyptian-French vocalist Dalida recorded “Darla Dirladada,” releasing it both as a single and an album track in Italian, German, and English renditions. Subsequent interpretations include a rendition by Dutch singer Marva and a notably successful cover by G.O. Culture in 1993, which achieved widespread acclaim in France.

The song also garnered popularity in Finland, with Kai Hyttinen recording a Finnish version in 1972, which enjoyed chart success. Finnish music ensemble Jean S. has likewise contributed to its enduring popularity.

In 1995, the Skopje-based rock band “Memorija” released their rendition of the song, titled “Dirlada,” adding yet another chapter to its enduring legacy. •

Secrets of the Sea: Kalymnos Depths Unveiled

Stavros Valsamidis created the Sea World Museum of Kalymnos to preserve the island’s legacy by showcasing his treasure hoard, from marine creatures to the remains of ship wrecks.

Εxploring the seabed of Kalymnos for over 45 years, Stavros Valsamidis became a diving legend, one generous with his knowledge. All the diving centres of Kalymnos benefited from his information about the most exciting diving spots. With the spirit of a collector, Stavros accumulated thousands of items from the sea and created the Valsamidis Sea World Museum in the coastal village of Vlychada in Kalymnos. An impressive private collection of over 17,000 unique findings is the lifelong work of a man born and raised on the island.

The discoveries, which came from thousands of dives, include a wide variety of plants and animals from the marine kingdom: fish, shells, crustaceans, starfish, corals, sharks, turtles, and, of course, all kinds of sponges.

Part of the museum is dedicated to the profession of sponge diving and includes all the tools and suits used by divers from 1872 to the present day.

One wing exhibits findings from the First and Second World Wars, such as torpedoes and pieces from aeroplanes. In a specially designed space, amphorae from the 6th, 4th, 3rd, and

2nd centuries BC are preserved, as well as other objects from ancient shipwrecks. There is also a collection of around 2,000 photographs related to the history and tradition of sponge divers. Impressively, the entire wreck of an ancient merchant ship, filled with treasures like amphorae, was brought to light from the depths of the sea by Stavros Valsamidis.

The main concern of the museum’s founder always was the promotion of Kalymnos and its sponge diving history for the survival of its people and their families. Today, the work of Stavros Valsamidis, who passed away at the age of 65, a celebrated diver of all the Earth’s seas, continues through his son Giannis.

As the legacy of Stavros Valsamidis lives on, the Valsamidis Sea World Museum stands, not only as a tribute to the rich underwater heritage of Kalymnos but also as a beacon of education and preservation for future generations. With each passing day, this museum continues to inspire awe and appreciation for the treasures hidden beneath the waves, ensuring that the remarkable stories of the sea and its explorers will endure for years to come. •

Echoes of the Sea

George Tatakis, an Athenian black-andwhite photographer, exhibits his work in esteemed institutions like Somerset House and the Benaki and Fragonard museums, as well as media as The New York Times, National Geographic, and LFI. During one expedition, he crossed paths with Dimitris, a sponge diver in Kalymnos. Fascinated with his use of stateof-the-art diving equipment, including an air compressor instead of oxygen bottles, Tatakis persuaded Dimitris to don a traditional diving suit for a photoshoot. Unable to shoot at the

shipyard due to logistical constraints, they captured compelling images near Dimitris’ school, as he was not only a genuine sponge diver, but also the proprietor of a diving school nestled on the breathtaking Therma beach of Kalymnos. This encounter birthed Tatakis’ best-selling photograph, featured on HBO Max’s ‘The Flight Attendant’ and displayed in Varoulko Seaside, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Athens.
