EDEN DOME - Giostra Simone Rezzato, Brescia Tutor : Simone Giostra, Hope Strode Master’s Degree | 2^ academic year

The are of the project is rezzato (brescia). The project is part of a large complex, consisting of a wine cellar and an area dedicated to vineyards along the quarry steps. The project foresees an “eden dome that is a building containing a botanical garden, capable on the one hand of guaranteeing energy to the entire complex, on the other hand of creating an attractive point in the area. Through an accurate analysis carried out with software such as Grasshopper and Qgis, the building was created by superimposing the solar analyzes, wind analyzes, and the presence of water in the quarry. Thanks to this, the decision to create two different gardens was particularly important: the garden with a tropical climate, and the garden with a Mediterranean climate. It represents an important node for the entire quarry, as it allows internal connectivity and continues the external flow with the vines, giving continuity to the entire system My proposal is to create a building capable of guaranteeing the perfect climate standards for plants and for the people who populate the area, but at the same time capable of changing over time, regenerating and expanding.

A NEW HOSTEL - Cino Zucchi Porta Genova, Milan Tutor : Cino Zucchi, Carolina Pacchi, Stefano Tropea Master’s Degree | 1^ academic year

The site is located in the city of Milan, in an unused part of Porta Genova train station, closed into a boundary wall. This neighborhood is characterized mostly by residential buildings made in the 60s. Our planning strategy is to use the space to maintain the original alignment of the buildings in the context, by giving a different perception of the location. To support this idea we have hypothesized the demolition of the wall to increase the permeability of the area. Requirement was to design a hostel with a maximum of 200 beds and a multi-purpose space in an autonomous pavilion. After studying the context, analyzing it from the different facets, we have decided to use three main words to design the space: - maintenance of pre-existence, - linearity, - permeability. The most important thing was to give a visual importance to the added part, which was possible by highlighting the conjunctions with the pre-existence, creating a connection between the streets, and modifying the materials of the open space. In fact, we decided to create a mighty base, made of stone panels, surmounted by a ventilated facade made of sandstone panels. Addressing the question of the relationship between the preexistence and the innovation is a high level of cultural commitment, regardless of the scale or the consideration of the existing in terms of importance. This challenge exists because there is a multidisciplinary and multilingual meeting, that is always contemporary through the ways and the knowledge paths. In this contraposition, the past and the new must merge, creating critical connections always unreleased and increasingly effective in ensuring conservation and history.

NEW TRAIN STATION - Grimshaw Architects Porta Genova, Milan Tutor : Andrew Whalley (Grimshaw Architects), Paolo Vimercati, Antonio Capsoni Master’s Degree | 1^ academic year

The area of the project is Porta Garibaldi. Our proposal is to make simplier and more safe overcrossing the railway. We have developped a project with an integration of different areas, using elements that give a new character to the neighborhood. The project plans a big slab on the railway hat will be divided into three small parts. There are some access points in some important nodes in the area: these connect the level of the street to the big slab, with staircases and lifts. For the internal connectivity the streets continue the flow of the city path, to give a continuity with the historic trace. The scheme of plazas showsthe open and common space that is cut by some voids that allow air and light to enter down to the railway. The shading sistem brings all the main passage that is a diagolan that overcross the whole area. This is made by lamellas thata in some part become closer and in other parts opened, to see up. We have taken the function of the project of the Cavalcavia Bussa to continue the sport district inside the first parr of our area. Our proposal is to create different zones of density inside the area, divided by green areas and strees. So, the fist part close ti Cavalcavia Bussa, has two sport fields woth bleachers and a triangular playgroung for children. The filter zone is a green area woth banches and trees that create shades. On the main passage, we have designed an open market with triangular pavillions that sell vegetables, fruits and fresh products. These pavilions have the shape of flowers, with the counter in timber that runs all around the space. The roof is curved, made by steel. The triangular form is the better shape for internal flows of people. All the market is closed by curtain wall and a big roof that reprends lamellas of the middle roof. The taller building is for offices, the middle part is more connected to the station below and the last part is a serra. This is connected to the use of the open market. Finally in front of the serra there is a bloom garden that could be carried on by all citizens. The last important element in this area is the water flow that passes through all the landscape and is con- nected at the water tower near the site. 32

A NEW PERFORMANCE SPACE - Peter Beard Belluno, Veneto Tutor : Peter Beard, Elisabetta Rotta Master’s Degree | 1^ academic year

The site is in the city of Castellavazzo, in an abandoned and characteristic cement factory. Our planning strategy is to use as best all the spaces to mantain the original composition of the buildings, by giving a different perception of the location. Requirement was to design a house for 20-25 actors and performance space for 50-300 people. We wanted to give visual importance to the three silos, highlighting the conjunctions between what we added, making them move forward with respect to the silhouette of the three silos, and modifying the internal materials. In fact, we decided to use wood, with a triple function: acoustic, thermal and visual value. We built the theater structure, that is emblematic because it exploits the full height of the silos and is suitable for hosting many people. This structure is made by scaffolding and consists of a metal net, which supports horizontal wooden panels. Also important are the horizontal passages, which connect the theater to the residences, through the direct connection of the internal structure of the theater with the built used as a residence. Studing the facade, we decided to hide the core of the structure near the boundary, with precast concrete panels, interropted by windows as big as the wall. On the ground floor and on the first floor the building is completely opened, in order to make only the internal structure visible. The rooms are placed in the other three floors, where there is a corridor on which the rooms and the common bathroom overlook. Important is the use of the loggia, used in the rooms to create a common space on each floor, then resumed in the upper part of the residences. On the top floor there is in fact the common part of the project, in which are located the kitchen, the drying space, and a public space used for eating and resting. Here the loggia is important for two factors: on the one hand it is a climatic heat filter, and at the same time allows the passage of air as it is open; on the other side it acts as a common open space for the warmer seasons.

RELATION WITH THE VILLA - Caruzzo Letizia Lake of Geneva, Geneva Tutor : Letizia Caruzzo, Irene Pasina, Mauro Fabbro Bachelor’s Degree | 3^ academic year

The project involves the restoration of a villa of an art collector on Lake Geneva. We intervened by implementing a new architectural body alongside the pre-existing Villa, of which, in turn, only the original external appearance was maintained, and only the existing interiors were demolished. From the main entrance, located on the North-West side, there is an optical cone towards the lake: in fact, nothing stands in the way of the visitor’s gaze, addressed, indeed, on the one hand thanks to the positioning of works of art in the midst of the large open spaces , which mark out and divide the space; on the other thanks to the large sliding glass doors located to the south. The villa’s supporting skeleton is the double-height equipped wall, which contains some works of art, and serves as an emblematic connection between the lower and upper floors. All the rooms are located on the first floor: the existing building space has been made available to the two children, while the entire new body houses the master bedroom and guest rooms.

RELATION WITH THE MUSEUM - Tolve Valerio Lake of Como, Como Tutor : Valerio Tolve, Luisa Ferro Bachelor’s Degree | 3^ academic year

The project involves the construction of a new building to house a new museum and ateliers for emerging artists. The conception of the Museum stems from the desire to create a continuity with the pre-existence, being the continuation of the old Garibaldi Museum, which generates the planimetric layout, and to which it is connected through the construction of an “arm” that starts from the main volume. In fact, here a demolition of the existing building was mitigated, to later construct a new building to complement the pre-existence. Its location aims to mark the transition between the Garibaldi Museum and the new volume: the new building develops parallel to the historic wall, and is a completely new block, inserted into the natural embankment. The scheme adopted in the planimetry assumes particular importance in the functional organization of the building, developed on different levels in which the two blocks were built, creating a terrace effect: the volume of the entrance atrium establishes a relationship between the New Museum, with the classrooms of the laboratories and the vertical connections, and the second volume composed of a museum room. The ground floor includes a large museum room, multi-purpose exhibition areas and technical rooms, a bar, and finally a service block. The upper floor houses the continuation of the exhibition itinerary and direct access to the terrace. The building is conceived as a succession of portals that support the real envelope and articulate the internal rhythm, dividing the building and creating “naves”. The only volume that comes out of the main building, thus breaking its linearity, is the glass showcase, conceived as the thematic anticipation of the exhibition that can be supposed to be set up inside the Museum. The building’s layout is reminiscent of Romanesque basilicas, being ideologically made up of three naves, studied according to a golden ratio, and a semicircular apse, dug out of the embankment, formed by tiers.

EXTERNAL WORK Extracurricular Internship Studio Caruzzo e Mauro Architetti Associati

The undersigned Michela Stamin declares to have carried out the Internship activity at the Studio Caruzzo and Mauro Architetti Associati, in Via Ricotti 22 in Milan. The hours were exhausted in the months of October, November and December, and were used to carry out various types of study activities, ranging from the preparation of preliminary technical drawings aimed at preparing the building practice of a villa, to the creation of brochures . Going more specifically, I initially carried out activities for the presentation of a brochure, including definitive graphical drawings, which could summarize some projects taken on by the Firm. Since the studio was aware of my desire to devote myself to the design of an architectural interior, I was subsequently asked to work on a project to renovate an apartment in London, creating constructive tables. By issuing tables to be submitted to construction technicians. It was also important to dedicate myself to rendering the interiors of another project in Milan, in order to verify the spatial choices and the proposed materials. It was also interesting to elaborate the construction of a threedimensional model of an armchair for industrial construction, also implementing a verification of the executive details. It was particularly important for me to carry out this internship due to several factors: I came into contact with a large reality in Milan, and I was able to make myself known and appreciated. Participating in projects with tight and well-defined deadlines I had to apply myself with perseverance and attention, I was constantly followed and I always enjoyed the necessary support.

EXTERNAL WORK Participation in the “Earthquakes. Design in safety “

”Earthquakes: planning in safety” is a course organized by the Foundation of the Order of Architects PPC of the Province of Milan with the aim of proposing an overview of the very current issue of securing the building stock in a country characterized by a high degree of seismicity. The main objective of the course was to give a concrete idea about the professionalism working for anti-seismic design: the building system must in fact guarantee a lucid contribution to the territorial protection policy, and the ability, at the same time, to foresee possibilities of improving the environment. From emergency intervention, to asset security, to prevention, the course has retraced the steps of a seismic event, from the beginning to the reconstruction, trying to highlight the different professional skills that are activated to give a technical answer to the needs. Finally, ample space has also been given to the landscape aspects, since the overcoming of the damages of an earthquake is not only important from the point of view of building reconstruction, but also to obtain a reorganization of the territory.
