01 “OSSERVANZA” The city inside the City

OSSERVANZA
The area that today occupies a large portion of land, 14 hectares, near the historic center and redeveloped would represent a great added value for the city. Its extension is about 1/5 of the historical center and regeneration means an important reconnection for the urban fabric. The residential area south of Imola and the surrounding schools are those who would benefit the most. Until the reopening of the park on the area, a bit of petty crime had developed which exploited the closed and uncontrolled places of the asylum. This has led to the social degradation of the area. With the reopening in 2016, the situation has improved, but without a redevelopment of the buildings, the area remains deserted for most of the day and continues to host homeless people and situations at risk of social degradation. The redeveloped pedestrian paths would allow a better pedestrian reconnection. Currently the paths follow the first drawing of the historic park of Felice Orsini. The architect Raffaella Manaresi, who was in charge of the restoration of the park, worked mainly on the safety of buildings, the repaving of paths, the care of abandoned green areas for 10 years and the furniture of the park with lampposts, benches, bollards. Furthermore, as a protected historical park, a cataloging of the old trees has been done. Going to define a new program for the area the paths and the green areas were firstly hierarchized in order to better adapt to the use and to create new useful connections to the surrounding neighborhoods that over time have developed differently and need new attention.

02 THREE PODS Botanic Garden
“Marecchia” Park edevelopment project Tutor: Stefania Rössl - Elena Mucelli Year: 2017 Location: Rimini (ITA) Programme: Botanic Garden
The choice of the design theme aims at the improvement and expansion of the park’s functions rather than its total change of use. For this reason the idea was the realization of a park / botanical garden which mainly sees the increase of vegetation, the construction of three thematic pavilions and two information panels and the resolution of the problem of rising waters in the basin.

TERRITORIAL CLASSIFICATION
CURRENT CONDITION
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
Parco XXV Aprile is located in the city of Rimini. It was born in the 1920s when it was decided to divert the course of the river “Marecchia. In fact, the park stands on the old river bed that connected with the current canal port. The park is located in a very favorable position for social activities and interaction with the city, being able to be the place of passage of different types of mobility in an area near the center and many neighborhoods and services of the first suburbs.
Its appearance is disordered and disorganized but still functional and used by the Rimini area. One of the major problems is however given by the morphology of the land: the water level rises several times a year, uncontrollably, flooding part of the park. This problem over the years has been addressed several times but never completely resolved.
The project starts from the idea of communication between green and water. The latter enters the park and crosses it through a main artery that connects the basin to the farthest building; a stylized memory of the origins of the site. Through two other branches that start from the path to get to two other pavilions, the water thus enters into communication with all the exhibition sites, taking advantage of the increase in the level of the basin during periods of flood or pumping systems in dry periods. This is accompanied by a cycle path that leads the visitor to the greenhouses and to the green tanks. The three exhibition pavilions, each of them dedicated to a different climate, are characterized by the differentiation of the types of plants housed inside.

THREE PODS
The diaphragm, so called because of its form to the top view, tries to guide the visitor in an educational path in the microclimate of typical tropical vegetation, proposing within it, over an area of 100 square meters, a vast exposure of trees medium-sized. The use of the spaces is organized on two paths: - A lateral flight in the shape of a helix follows the curvilinear course of the sphere, bringing the visitor to an interaction with the vegetation on various levels, up to the summit, from which the panoramic view of the park can be enjoyed; - A path at ground level takes the visitor to the center of the dome allowing him to closely observe the plants.

THREE PODS
The structure of the sphere is in steel while its covering is in sheets of ETFE, a plastic material 99 times lighter than glass that allows the use of minimum thickness of steel. The wooden ramp, with glass parapet, is supported by steel wings connected to the same main structure. The inspiration for the development of the structure comes from the so-called geodesic domes, hemispherical structures composed of a network of beams lying on maximum circles; for the construction of the ramp, from the master of Russian constructivism Vladimir Tatlin and his Monument to the Third International, never realized.

THE RING
The Ring is structured to guide the visitor through an innovative sensory journey through the green exhibition areas, dedicated to the Mediterranean climate, accompanied by a stimulating play of lights. This combination comes from the interesting relationship that is created between plants and lighting and the choice of glass colors comes precisely to emphasize the effects, the benefits, that these lights have on plants. The choice therefore fell on lighting: - blue / purple to favor the vegetative phase; - red for fruiting; - dark red for flowering.

THE RING
The effect that is created inside is obtained thanks to the use of colored glass in both sides and a led lighting, and together they define the three corresponding exposure areas for each wing. The outside diameter of the building is 40 meters while the interior spaces vary from a maximum of 10 meters to a minimum of 6 meters. The undulating shape of the sheet metal covering is regulated according to the study of the sun’s course during the day, thus creating a lower room towards the entrance and a higher one towards the exit so as to shield the sunlight. The structure of the building is in steel while the facades are continuous glass facades with punctual fixings. Exploded isometric

LEAF
The final building of the water path that crosses the park is called “La Foglia”. The building, through its characteristic shape, from which the name derives, seeks to convey, even visually, the connection between the design theme and the realization of its components. The exhibition of plants belonging to the arid climate is hosted here, and the building is therefore characterized by a high temperature and a low degree of humidity. Typical of these environments are plants such as cacti and other succulents, able to store water for long periods of high drought. We can divide the space of the Leaf into two distinct parts:

LEAF
- The first is the covered and closed part where the thematic display tanks, the bathrooms and the reception are located; Â - The second part consists of the water basin and the outdoor outdoor path that, bordered by the ribs of the roof that reach the ground, surrounds the actual building. Even the roof itself is curvilinear and is also composed of two elements: the steel skeleton and the thermochromatic glass cladding, whose appearance varies according to the temperature: the higher the temperature, the more the glass becomes opaque. The support is given by two external walls in reinforced concrete that delimit the 800 square meters of arid exposure. The height of the Leaf varies from 6 meters at the east entrance to 13 meters at the west entrance. Exploded isometric

03 DANCE AHEAD School of dance
“Colle Garampo” Urban Regeneration Tutor: Adalberto da Rocha Gonçalves Dias Year: 2017 Location: Rimini (ITA) Programme: Botanic Garden
The dance school is located in the Colle Garampo area of Cesena, bordered by via Fattibili in the north, via Malatesta Novello in the west and via Quattordici in the east. The main access to the complex is from Via Fattiboni, through the ruins of the former Tomassini Mill-Factory, while a secondary access to the area is present from Via Malatesta Novello, from where a path develops that makes the archaeological excavation area visible located in the highest part of the hill. Loading and unloading of goods will also take place from Via Fattiboni, from the entrance to the courtyard behind the surrounding houses.

DANCE AHEAD
The basic idea throughout the design process has always been to keep the various functions that would have been carried out in a very decisive manner divided. The main entrance leads to the cafeteria area, created from the restoration of the ruins of the former Mill, which overlooks a small square along the ancient walls of the hill. At a higher level you enter the new building, two parallelepipeds of the same size that, cross-orthogonally, create a cantilever on the main entrance. As you can see in the section the functional destinations are differentiated according to the levels: on the ground floor (orange) there are the administration and the theoretical lessons, on the first floor (blue) there are the various classrooms where the practical lessons and the relative locker rooms, while in the basement (green), the lower parallelepiped, is completely destined to the auditorium, an area open to all citizens for shows and events. As for the materials, in the cafeteria obtained from the pre-existing building it was decided to intervene by detaching the existing material. Restoring the brick wall to make it safe, while all newly constructed elements will be plastered in white. The main building externally is in exposed concrete blocks, while inside the walls are plastered with exposed concrete elements and stone flooring.

04 LYMPH Educational Botanical Park
Urban restitching of an area South of Cesena. Tutor: Valentina Orioli, Enrico Brighi Year: 2017 Location: Cesena (ITA) Programme: Educational Botanic Park
T he idea of starting with an outline of the paths we are going to build, we have distinguished two Green areas, the one adjacent to the river is destined for a play area for children and sports, while the other part becomes a Educational Botanical Garden. Within the latter there will be a New Lot built with a Residential Area of 1350 square meters where inside there will be a residential building and covered parking lots. The bridge connects from the children’s play area to a new tree-lined avenue with a cycle path located in Via Modigliana, which changes the direction of travel of the cars, from a double alternate sense, to a one-way direction “Parco per Fabio”.
