MICHELIN CHOSEN FOR TRACK & STREET THE ULTRA-HIGH-PERFORMANCE TIRE CHOICE
Michelin delivers performance, value and environmental wins
2
n
Tire makers often boast of how many tires they have carried to a particular race. Michelin takes a different approach. “For us, the technical challenges are related to tire longevity, safety and the environment,” said Pascal Couasnon, director of motorsports for Michelin. “We are convinced that the challenges of the future are safer mobility and less impact on the environment. We are continuously looking to reduce the number of tires by extending the tire life. “Developing tires that deliver consistent levels of high performance for an extended period brings greater value to the user, be they race teams or consumers.” 24 v. 24 In 2015, Chip Ganassi Racing won the Rolex 24 At Daytona with its Ford EcoBoost powered Riley DP. The winning car covered 2,634 miles in 24 hours at an average speed of 109.6 miles per hour and a fastest lap speed of 128.4 miles per hour. The winning car used 30 sets of the series single specification Continental tire. An average of 87.8 miles per set. In the Le Mans 24 Hour race that year, the winning Porsche 919 hybrid, which produces more than 1,000 horsepower, covered 3,452 miles, an average speed of 139.3 mph with a fastest race lap of 154.4 mph. The Porsche hybrid used just 10 sets of Michelin tires, an average of 345 miles per set! Narrower, Lighter and Fewer Interestingly, those Michelin tires were nearly 15 percent narrower than the previous generation and represented a weight savings of approximately 17 pounds (8 kg) per set. Outside of Le Mans, where 12 sets are now permitted, tire use has been reduced by 33 percent for the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship competition. Teams are now permitted just four sets of tires for qualifying and the Six Hour WEC races. That approach obliges teams to double-stint tires at least twice. Combined with the narrower tires, the net result was a savings of over 12 tons of raw materials over the course of a single WEC season. Michelin and IMSA Here in North America, Michelin and IMSA have worked together to limit the number of tires, the range of options and the introduction of new tires during the season to help control costs and maintain consistent data for Balance of Performance measures for the GT Le Mans class.
Formula E Electrifies with Michelin Michelin is the exclusive tire partner of the FIA Formula E World Championship series and introduced the first 18-inch rim diameter tire in international Formula racing. And it is not a slick, but rather a treaded tire designed to run in dry or wet conditions and help to extend the range of EV cars. These technical challenges are important to Michelin as it develops innovative technology for electric production cars. Raising the bar with EV2 Earlier this year, Michelin raised the bar on Formula E tire performance. Michelin reduced the weight of the EV2 tires by 11 pounds (5 kg) for a set, a reduction of 5,511 pounds (2,500 kg) for the season. The reduction in weight reduces rolling mass and unsprung weight. Teams are permitted just six tires per car/per race, including one new set plus a front tire and one rear tire from the previous race. As a result, Michelin manufactured 250 fewer tires for the season. And, to increase performance, the new Michelin tires improved the rolling resistance of its EV2 tires for the series by 15 percent, an improvement of more than 1.24 miles (2 km), the equivalent of a full lap of many of the Formula E circuits. The new EV2’s reduced rolling resistance allows the battery to run longer because it is not overcoming the tires’ resistance. WRC Michelin carefully chooses each series in which it participates based on the technical opportunity and challenge, and develops different technologies in each series. “In the FIA World Rally Championship, we can’t use a wide variety of tires,” said Couasnon. “We are only allowed two specifications for the entire season so we need diverse solutions. It is very relevant to road cars, because you can drive your car in many different conditions, too. “Working with the FIA, tire consumption was reduced by 20 percent in one season and a further 20 percent in the next season.” The Green Benefits The use of fewer or narrower tires requires less raw material and the energy used to secure and transport raw materials. Taking fewer tires to a race reduces transportation, the tire workshop footprint, and the support staff required to service the tires. Yet the cars are as fast or even faster. “Teams are constantly looking to reduce or control operating expenses, and tires--along with their care and management by race team personnel--constitute a significant expense,” said Chris Baker, director of motorsport, Michelin North America. “Reducing tire use is a way for every team to conserve financial and human resources. It seems counter-intuitive that Michelin wants to make tires last longer while delivering consistent excellent performance, but that is a major reason driving consumers’ purchases of Michelin tires.”

HOW CHAMPI CHOOSE MICHE Every great relationship begins with a story. Here are the stories of how three of Michelin’s U.S. based technical partner race teams came to choose Michelin. FERRARI BUILDS A WINNING COMBINATION Giuseppe Risi was wrapping up an agreement for his Risi Competizione Ferrari team to campaign the new Ferrari F430 GT in the 2006 American Le Mans Series. Details regarding cars, engines, drivers, parts and technical support had been essentially agreed with the factory, but Risi was convinced that he needed one final piece to build a champion. He wanted Michelin tires but Ferrari had an agreement with another tire maker. “I said that we must have Michelin tires to win,” said Risi, whose Ferrari of Houston is a top Ferrari dealer and longtime entrant. “Ferrari said that the cars racing in Europe and Asia were on Pirelli tires. We wouldn’t be able to share data.” “I repeated that I needed to have Michelin tires in order to win.” “Keep Your Cars” “They said ‘but we get the other tires for free and we have to pay a lot for the Michelin tires,’” said Risi, who still delights in retelling the story. “Finally, I said, ‘then keep your cars. There is no point in me racing if I can’t win and I need Michelin tires to win.’” Success The factory relented and the Risi Competizione FerrariMichelin combination promptly delivered four race wins and the 2006 ALMS GT team championship. Risi next swept the 2007 ALMS GT manufacturer, team, and driver championships with eight class race wins.
4
An Amazing Streak The Houston based team next began a stunning run of success in the 2008 major endurance races, taking GT class victories at both the 24 Hour of Le Mans and Petit Le Mans and topped that in 2009 by sweeping Sebring, Le Mans and Petit Le Mans to run its majors streak to five consecutive wins. And then, Risi opened the 2010 season by winning Sebring again, to make it six major endurance wins in a row. Transatlantic Message Delivered The Ferrari factory drivers personally carried the word back to Maranello that the Michelin tire performance was notably higher. Before long, the Ferrari factory GTs switched to Michelin. Soon all the top Ferrari teams in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship were racing on Michelin tires. Renewing Success Today, with the exciting Ferrari 488 GTE, the Risi Competizione Ferrari record of success continues. Drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander, joined by James Calado, closed out the 2016 WeatherTech Championship with an impressive GT Le Mans class victory at Road Atlanta’s Petit Le Mans. With 34 wins, including three Le Mans class titles, three Sebring wins and three wins at Petit Le Mans, Giuseppe Risi was clearly right when he fought to create the relationship of Ferrari, Michelin and his team to create a winning combination. And that is how it began.

ForD Chooses MichelIN
Right from the Start THE SECRET STUDIO The Ford Motor Company had a very big secret hidden in the basement studio of Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan in late 2014. A small, skunkworks team was secretly developing the new Ford GT. Ford’s incredibly ambitious plan was to simultaneously develop and build both the new production model and the race car and return to win Le Mans 50 years after Ford’s historic 1966 victory with the original Ford GT. Right from the Start One of the first decisions Ford made was to choose Michelin as its tire partner for the Ford GT and, in fact for all of Ford Performance. “Michelin was already a Ford strategic partner and we had a great working relationship,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance. “One of the first questions that we asked Ford when they brought us into the program was about tires,” said Mike Hull, managing director for Chip Ganassi Racing. “They said that they had already made an agreement with Michelin, which is what we wanted to hear.” Stealing the Show The plan was to use the big January 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit to make the surprise unveiling of the new Ford GT concept. It essentially stole the show. After a preliminary shakedown at a Canadian circuit, the first race car

arrived in France in early June, not at Le Mans, but rather at the Michelin technical centers and proving grounds at Ladoux, France. There, photography and video were carried out in private and a handful of measured tests helped reconcile Ford’s wind tunnel and simulation data with real world performance. Later that week, the Ford GT racer was unveiled at Le Mans as Executive Chairman Bill Ford announced Ford’s plan to return to Le Mans in 2016. Across the Board That November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Pericak announced that Ford had chosen Michelin not only for the Ford GT, but to provide custom engineered tires for the entire Ford Performance lineup. Success Arrives In 2016, it didn’t take long for the Ford CGR team to find victory as Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe provided a brilliant demonstration of the Ford EcoBoost fuel efficiency to take the win in Monterey and provide momentum for Le Mans. The Le Mans Storybook Ford returned to Le Mans in 2016 with brand new cars and a team that had never previously entered Le Mans. They left with the class pole, class win and a 1-3-4 finish. “It’s a fairytale race. It’s something today that I still kind of smile when I think about it because there’s a lot on the line and that’s not something that
anyone, I think, expected us to do,” said Pericak. “I’m sure the bets were all against it. It wasn’t just winning a race, it was validating history.” The Momentum Continues Fresh from its success at Le Mans in 2016, Westbrook and Briscoe led an impressive Ford 1-2 at Watkins Glen and then made it three consecutive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship wins when they played a brilliant tire strategy, double-stinting their Michelin tires to win in Canada. “The biggest change in 2016 was when we started running the 2016 Michelin WEC tires at Monterey,” said Briscoe. “They just turned the car on. The front was better connected, was more together with the rear end and better to drive. From there on we performed well.” The CGR team opened the 2017 season with a victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, giving the Ford GT wins at Le Mans and Daytona in the first 13 months of competition. Partnership “This is a strategic partnership and it goes both on and off the track,” said Pericak. “And if you look at what we’ve done with the Ford GT, I can honestly say that we would not be as successful as we are today without the Michelin partnership because the tires that we have developed with Michelin are absolutely phenomenal.”

A Butt Kicking Sometimes, it wouldn’t be appropriate to talk with a team linked to a rival tire maker. In that case, the most effective way to start a conversation is to simply kick their butt. In June 2003, the official factory backed Corvette Racing team headed off to Le Mans fully expecting to claim its third consecutive class win at the big 24 Hour race. It didn’t work out that way. “We had a perfect race at Le Mans in 2003, the best race we had ever run there and we got beat by a Ferrari by a couple of laps and started to explore what happened. A lot of it was that the Ferrari that beat us had Michelin tires,” recalled Corvette Racing senior driver Ron Fellows, whose conclusion was correct but recollection of the margin was not.
“Bo said, ‘we were getting tires for free as part of his supply agreement with Goodyear.’ I said, ‘if those are the tires that we have to race, then we may as well park the cars.’” After Fehan provided the data, some team R&D budget adjustments were eventually made to fund the purchase of the Michelin tires. There was nothing that Corvette Racing could develop that season that would produce a gain as substantial as the change in tires.
Viva La Difference The margin of Corvette’s deficit to the winning Michelin-fitted Ferrari at Le Mans in 2003 was not “a couple of laps”, but 10 laps or nearly 85 miles. “After getting our butt kicked at Le Mans in 2003, the powers to be at GM and Corvette Racing worked to find out what happened and to break down our performance. “We saw that the Ferraris could double-stint the Michelin tires with no performance drop off,” said Fellows. “That opened the door to try one set of Michelin tires after Petit Le Mans.” A subsequent major test was scheduled for Sebring. “That first big test at Sebring opened a lot of eyes. “We not only went three seconds a lap faster, the Michelin tires hooked up so much quicker on acceleration that it initially created some driveline issues for us, which was a good thing.”
The Payback “Michelin wasn’t going to just sell us some race tires, they wanted a fair shot at our business,” said Fehan. “That was the third hurdle. We promised Michelin a fair shot at the Corvette ZR 1 which was then being developed.” Michelin won that shoot-out and has prevailed ever since. “As result of the tests, Corvette chose Michelin,” said Fellows. The success on the track put two brands together for the first time and laid the foundation for a relationship that has grown through the years to the extent that every model of the current Corvette C7 that rolls off the line in Bowling Green, KY comes exclusively with Michelin tires.
Impossible to Ignore “There were substantial differences in lap times and that would keep us from continuing to be successful,” he said. “It appeared that the Michelin technology was superior at that time. After that first test session, it was impossible to ignore.” That technical performance set the stage for a different set of hurdles. Guns vs. Knives In order to make a switch to Michelin, Doug Fehan, the program manager for Corvette Racing, now had to handle internal challenges starting with the fact that all the production model Corvettes came with Goodyear tires. “We’ve been taking a knife to a gun fight,” Fehan told the Corvette managers. “You can’t believe the difference in technology. We’ve got to change.” Next was the not so delicate matter of costs. Fehan went to Bo Andersen, the no-nonsense head of purchasing at General Motors. “I said, ‘I need a favor,’” recalled Fehan. “I need money to buy Michelin tires.”
8
Back on Top Corvette Racing returned to the top step of the podium at Le Mans in 2004, lapping nearly six seconds per lap quicker than the previous year and now able to successfully double-stint tires.
Corvette and Michelin – The Record The Corvette-Michelin winning relationship has produced 80 wins including six victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. With five wins (Daytona, Sebring, Lime Rock, Road America and VIR) to sweep the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech manufacturer, team and driver championships, and three wins (Sebring, Long Beach and Circuit of The Americas) in the first half of the 2017 season, the Corvette-Michelin record is still growing.

ULTIMATE SPORT
MICHELIN ® Pilot ® Sport 4 S Joins the Pilot Family
One of the toughest challenges in sport is following a legend. Michelin engineers have clearly met that challenge in the newly introduced MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport 4 S, the successor to the widely recognized industry benchmark MICHELIN® Pilot® Super Sport ultra-highperformance tire. The Best of Both Worlds Michelin tire developers combined the best aspects of the Pilot Super Sport with the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport Cup 2 to provide a tire for sports cars and high-performance vehicles. The MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 S uses construction methods and materials directly developed in competition such as the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the 24 Hours of Le Mans, FIA Formula E and FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). More than 60 Original Equipment fitments for the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 S are currently launched or under development.
Michelin tire fitments are available at: http://www.michelinman.com/US/en/tires.html
Latest Innovations Featuring “Dynamic Response” technology, the Pilot Sport 4 S ensures optimum transmission of steering instruction onto the road, while its ultra-reactive tread design adapts continuously to optimize the tire’s footprint on the road. A Bi-compound technology sees a novel hybrid solution on the outer side of the tire to provide exceptional dry grip while a new compound on the inner side of the tire provides excellent wet grip and braking. Independent third-party testing in Germany against five top ultra-high-performance competitors saw the Pilot Sport 4 S rank first in dry braking, first in wet braking and first in dry lap times. Premium Touch Michelin designers made certain to develop a distinctive sidewall that matches the Pilot Sport 4 S tire performance. They developed a velvet effect to create a variety of contrasts on the outer sidewall to clearly differentiate the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 4 S. The tire is designed with a deep rim protector to offer rim protection for all types of wheels.
