Magazine Articles INTRODUCTION
During my internship, I was able to write several articles that were featured in issues of both Orlando Style and Tampa Style. In both the June and July issues, I was lucky enough to have my stories featured as cover stories. Article topics were both assigned and unassigned throughout my internship, and they were asked to be roughly 500 words. Some of the assigned topics I didn’t know much about beforehand, so I had to do extensive research before writing those pieces. My favorite piece to write was the Fall Beauty Guide. I’m very interested in makeup and beauty journalism, so this article was perfect for me. This was one of the stories that I came up with the topic and pitched to my editor. It was really enjoyable to write about something I’m so passionate about, and I think that really came through in my writing. Some of the articles featured here have yet to be published, and are being saved to be featured in upcoming issues of the magazine. Total Words in Magazine Articles: 3,657

4 WAYS TO GET A SUMMER GLOW, THE SAFE WAY
Sun worshippers, it’s time to wake up! Skin cancer is a terrifying reality, and it’s becoming all too common. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, a person’s risk for melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, doubles if they have had five or more sunburns. Roasting for hours in the sun is a giant price to pay for a darker skin complexion, but thankfully, we have found safe ways to get that sought after glowing skin, risk-free. Live, Eat, and Breathe Sunscreen A tan is your body’s response to injury caused by the sun, but moderate and safe exposure to the sun can be healthy, as it provides necessary vitamin D. Contrary to popular belief, sunscreen can still get you some color, it just offers you protection at the same time. With that being said, not all sunscreen is created equal. The most important ingredient in sunscreen is zinc oxide, so look for products high in this compound to get the best protection. Pro-tip: Be sure that your sunscreen is no more than a year old and has not been stored in high heat. This could cause the ingredients to break down. Retire the Tanning Beds According to the CDC, people who begin tanning younger than age 35 have a 75% higher risk of melanoma. That statistic alone should scare away whoever is still actually using these ultraviolet coffins. There are endless self-tanners on the market and the fear of leaving you looking like a Cheeto could scare anyone away from using them, but some are really worth the money. If you’re looking for a budget friendly option, Jergens® Natural Glow creates a tan without leaving you smelling like you’ve doused yourself in product. If you’re willing to splurge a bit, St. Tropez® Self Tan Bronzing Lotion provides an easy application, virtually streak-free. Pro-tip: If you’re going to get a spray tan, be sure to exfoliate your skin the night before. This will get rid of all your dead skins cells and allow your spray tan to last longer. Check your Watch It’s easy to get caught up in reading the latest issue of Orlando Style on the beach and lose track of the time, but knowing how long you’ve been exposed to the sun is vital. Doctors recommend that you reapply sunscreen every two hours, and more frequently if you’ve been in the water or have been sweating. The key is to get a little color, not sunburned! Pro-tip: Set alarms on your phone to easily keep track of time and to remind you when to reapply. Stuff your Face A British study is now saying that golden tans are possible without lotions or salon visits, and it’s as easy as listening to your mother’s age old advice: Eat your veggies! Foods like spinach, carrots, plums, and tomatoes are filled with antioxidants known as carotenoids, which cause pigments to peek through your skin and give you a healthy glow that simulates a tan. Pro-tip: The study says that to get these results, you’ll need two months of a produce-heavy diet to see results, so be patient. Worst-case scenario, you lose a couple pounds from eating all those vegetables and get a vitamin boost! HA! Words: 534

Magazine Articles 5 WAYS TO NATURALLY INCREASE YOUR TESTOSTERONE LEVELS Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily by the testicles and plays a large role in male sexuality and reproduction. (It’s also to blame for those embarrassing, unexpected cracks in your voice during puberty!) According to Dr. Oz, between two and four million men in the US alone suffer from belownormal testosterone levels. Having low-levels of this hormone can cause you to suffer from tiredness, muscle weakness, lowinterest in sex, weight gain, or depression. It’s not just a problem that’s affecting men age 50 and older, though. Levels gradually start to decline around age 30, and continue to decrease as a man grows with age. We’re sure you don’t want to put on any extra pounds and you definitely wouldn’t want your sex life to suffer, so consider these easy ways to boost your testosterone levels--no supplements needed! Avoid binge drinking It’s fine to have a few drinks to let loose, but studies suggest you cut yourself off after three drinks. Alcohol causes your testicles to stop producing testosterone, therefore killing those levels. This is one of the reasons you can find yourself having a bit of trouble in the sex department after a few too many beers after a night out. Moderation is absolutely key for your testosterone levels when alcohol is in thrown in the mix. Increase your Zinc A diet that is rich in the nutrient Zinc has been found to increase levels of testosterone in as little as six weeks. Zinc supplements unfortunately don’t boost levels above what is normal, so you must incorporate foods like lean meats and fish, raw milk, raw cheese, and beans to reap the benefits. However, be careful not to overcook these foods, as it will drastically deplete the nutrient levels! Go hard at the gym Now you don’t need to be throwing around dumbbells and grunting so loud that it scares others working out, but regular exercise is an easy way to force your body to produce extra testosterone. Compound exercises that train several large muscle groups like squats, bench presses, dead lifts, and chin-ups are the best way to boost your testosterone and build more muscle quickly. Stop watching ‘Game of Thrones’ We scared you for a second, right? You can totally keep watching this show, but only if you’re not awake watching it until all hours of the night! Sleep is vital to keeping your testosterone levels high, and it’s proven that these levels can drop by as much as 40% when you don’t get 6-8 hours of good, quality sleep each night. Get it on more often Here is some fantastic news: sex is good for you! Studies show that simply having an erection causes your circulating testosterone to rise significantly, and testosterone levels were even shown to increase on nights after sexual activity. Scientists recommend sex at least once a week, although that’s the bare minimum. (Pun intended!) After adhering to all the other health advice, this is one natural remedy that you can actually look forward to! Words: 502 MAGAZINE ARTICLES

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Summer is officially in full swing, and so was Tampa’s social calendar during the month of June. Tampa locals attended events from heartwarming charity events to concerts with major names plastered on the tickets. The bay was full of opportunities to get summer heated up right from the start! Tampa is always known to come together to support an amazing cause, and this month was no exception. Tampa hosted the Yoga Gives To St. Jude Kids event at Yogani Studios, Inc. This year, 24 of the best yoga studios in the country participated in the event on June 15th. The event is a one-ofa-kind, 12-hour fundraiser for the children of the St. Jude Children’s Research hospital. The pediatric cancer research center treats children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases through advanced research and exceptional care. On June 27th, Comedy Central’s funny man, Daniel Tosh rolled into town for his June Gloom Tour at the Carol Morsani Hall. Tosh is the host of Comedy Central’s Tosh.0, which features commentary on video clips, society, and celebrities. The show currently airs on Tuesday nights at 10pm ET/PT. Tosh shared the stage with special guest Jerrod Carmichael, an up-and-coming, stand-up comedian from Los Angeles. The show was one of the last nights of the tour, but that didn’t stop this duo from having the crowd doubled over with cramps from dirty jokes and adult content throughout the whole show. The Live Nation Amphitheatre at The Florida State Fairgrounds hosted numerous artists, making it by far the hottest place to be all month long. Country music made its mark in Tampa not only when Rascal Flatts performed with The Band Perry at the venue, but also when Brad Paisley and Chris Young took the stage there at the end of the month. Guests were able to finally pull out their cowboy boots from the back of their closets and throw back a few cold ones during these summer night shows. I know I can’t be the only one that hopes Tampa keeps reeling in these chart-topping performers from the country music industry! The biggest music party Tampa saw this month is when Pitbull and Ke$ha shared the stage on June 28th, with a night full of high energy and bass dropping jams. Whether you were watching from the amphitheatre seating or posted up in the lawn area, guests got the same experience with both artists making the venue feel more like a hot nightclub than a concert setting. Sequin-clad Ke$ha opened the show and entertained everyone with flashy costumes, drag queen dancers, and random inflatable items floating around the stage. She performed radio-hits such as “Tik-Tok” and “Blah Blah Blah”, but also surprised guests with a performance of an unreleased track entitled, “Machine Gun Love.” Miami native, Pitbull rocked the stage next with songs dedicated to luxurious liquor and his traveling of the globe. His seventh studio album, Global Warming, was released in November 2012 and featured collaborations with popular names like Shakira and Christina Aguilera. The tunes were flowing even faster than the drinks, and Pitbull’s “Don’t Stop The Party” was definitely the anthem by the end of the night for all concert guests, including myself! Words: 532

Magazine Articles FALL BEAUTY GUIDE
Summertime makeup is pretty simple, with its BB creams, tinted moisturizers, and just enough bronzer to make you look sun kissed. Now that fall’s here, it’s time to switch up your beauty regime to fit the season! Here are some tips to help make your transition from summer to fall a little bit easier. Moisturizer The crisp, fall air can make the softest of skins start to resemble a piece of sandpaper. To ensure your skin remains healthy and glowing, switch to a heavier moisturizer as the fall months roll in. Trade in lightweight formulas for richer and intensive skin treatment products. Try out: Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator, $37 Foundation We know how disappointing it is to hear, but that bronze skin you worked so hard to get all summer long will quickly fade as soon as fall begins. Don’t end up with that dreaded line along your jaw line from your foundation not matching the rest of your skin. Foundation is all about finding the shades that are right for your complexion, blending easily and seamlessly with your skin. If you’re not sure which shade is right for you, most makeup counters will match your skin to a product, free of charge! Try out: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, $44 Eye shadow Fall is all about nude shades inspired by the natural colors of the skin. Simply opting for warmer shades of brown, gold, mauve, and grey can make all the difference from your summer makeup routine. The fall also means its time for the ever-popular smoky eye to make a comeback! To get an extra smoked-out look, try lining your eye with a gel liner and then going over the area with a dark shadow to add a dramatic effect. Try out: Urban Decay Naked Palette, $50 Lips Summer is the season of fun, bright lip colors in shimmery pinks and bright corals, but fall brings darker, more matte shades. Scared to take the plunge straight into dark hues? Work your way to darker colors slowly with light berry and warm red shades first. You can play it safe with a neutral lip, which will allow you to try some other bold fall beauty trends instead. Of course, if a dark color isn’t your thing, a classic red lip is always in season! Try out: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Forbidden Burgundy, $34 Hair After having your hair exposed to the harsh sun, salt, and chlorine all summer long, it’s no wonder why your locks are dry and brittle come fall months. Hair can’t repair itself, so it’s up to us to give it the proper care it needs. Once a week, apply an intense hydrating mask after shampooing to replenish your strands with the proper moisture it requires. Try out: Moroccan Oil Masque, $49 Fragrance The fall is perfect for perfumes because you don’t have to worry about the humidity making a lovely scent go all funky. THE GROWING POPULARITY OF BATH BOMBS
Long gone are the days of simply using average bubble bath liquid as your way to unwind. Bath bombs are taking tubs by storm, revolutionizing bath time, as we know it! Bath bombs are balls of material, formed into various shapes, that are designed to dissolve and bubble when put in contact with water. While dissolving, bath bombs can let off various scents, colors, oils, and cleansing nutrients to the bath water, dissolving in roughly two minutes. These bath accessories have been taking the beauty market by storm, selling like wildfire and turning bath time into a luxurious occasion. Bath bombs can be used as a therapeutic addition to your bath time, can be given as a unique gift, or even used to make baths more appealing to young children. Here’s how you can make your own bath bombs at home: Dry ingredients: 8 oz. baking soda 4 oz. citric avid 4 oz. cornstarch 4 oz. salts (sea salts or mineral salts) Wet Ingredients: 3/4 tbsp water 2 tsp essential or fragrance oil 2 1/2 tbsp oil 1-2 drops food coloring Begin by putting all of your dry ingredients into a big bowl. Glass is best because it is non-reactive. Whisk or pestle all clumps out. You want a fairly smooth consistency throughout the entire mix. Blend your wet ingredients together, using a small jar and shake it up. Don’t worry about separation too much; you are not going to get a full emulsion. Then, while whisking, slowly add small amounts of the liquid to your dry ingredients. If the mixture starts to foam, you are adding the liquid too fast. Quickly whisk the reacting ingredients into the non-reactive part and you should be able to stop the reaction. You should add about a teaspoon at a time. Now that all of the wet ingredients have been added, you should have a mixture with the consistency of slightly damp sand. It should clump together when you squish it. Once your mixture is together, you have a pretty limited amount of time in which to get it into molds. To create a traditional bath bomb shape, you can use round Christmas tree ornaments that are designed to be filled with goodies. Pack each side, then overfill a tad at the center and press the two sides together. It takes a little practice to get a feel for how much filling you need, so don’t get discouraged if your first couple fall apart. You don’t need to leave them in the mold for very long, and you can tap them out as soon as you fill them. You can use all sorts of things to make your bombs; muffin tins, ice cube trays, or candy molds. This recipe allows you to be as creative as you’d like! Once they are completely dry, store bath bombs in an airtight container or bag. High humidity will make them activate. Since the recipe called for oil and water and no preservatives, you want to use them within about six months, assuming you can keep them for that long without using them. When you’re ready to use one, just drop it into a warm bath, and relax! Recipe via instructables.com Words: 534

blog Articles INTRODUCTION
When I wasn’t being assigned magazine articles, my editor asked me to create blog content, and all of the blog articles I wrote were topics chosen by me. This was exciting because it gave me free range to write about whatever I pleased, and let me explore topics that maybe weren’t right for the print magazine. My favorite blog article that I wrote was “5 Products You May Not Have in Your Makeup Bag, But Should.” Again, this article let me express my passion for all things makeup and beauty related, and it gave me the chance to showcase my knowledge on various products. I hadn’t seen many articles like this featured by compete ting publications, so I was pleased with my topic choice. This article ended up being fairly popular on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

5 PRODUCTS YOU MAY NOT HAVE IN YOUR MAKEUP BAG, BUT SHOULD You may think your everyday makeup bag has it all, but we found some products that are essential for any beauty enthusiast.
1. A quality pair of tweezers When your eyebrows look tamed, they frame your whole face and bring any makeup look together. This is one tool that you can splurge on, guilt-free because they’ll last in your bag for years to come. Rather than a cheap, drugstore version, a higher-end pair of tweezers will have an easy grip on fine strands and won’t slip while plucking stray hairs. It will make polishing up your brows a less tedious process! Tweezerman Slant Tweezer, $22 2. A makeup sponge We’re not talking about any old, disposable makeup sponge. We’re suggesting an applicator that when made wet, expands to nearly twice its size, making makeup waste minimal and streaks nonexistent. Sponges like this leave your face looking flawless and perfectly blended, covering blemishes and trouble areas perfectly. The Beautyblender, $20 3. A lip brush This tool may seem unnecessary, but a lip brush is worth ever penny since it can ensure you never get the dreaded lipstick tooth again. These precisely shaped brushes are used to achieve a defined lip, making lipstick application easy and quick. This tool will give you the control that using lipstick straight out of the tube doesn’t provide. Make Up For Ever Lip Brush #3N, $18 4. A cuticle trimmer This tool may look frightening at first glance, but it’s much less intimidating than its appearance suggests. This tool has a sharp razor at the end used to trim off dead skin at the cuticles or to remove hangnails. It’s a definite must for anyone who enjoys sprucing up his or her nails at home. Sally Hansen Push-n-Trim Cuticle Trimmer Groomer, $5 5. Eyebrow setting gel Strong brows are back, and setting gels ensure that your bold statement stays put. After filling in your brows to your liking, apply this gel to keep your hairs in place and to guarantee that they look polished all day long. blog Articles POWDER, LIQUID, OR CREAM HIGHLIGHTER. WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Highlighting may be one of the most underrated and underused steps in a woman’s everyday makeup routine. When done properly, highlighters can subtly catch and reflect the light in all the perfect spots on your face, creating the most amazing glow to any look. The best places to apply this product are to the cheekbones and temples, the eyes, and the Cupid’s bow. Highlighters are mainly a matter of preference, but there’s a huge range of products out there to choose from. Learning the ins and outs of highlighting can be intimidating at first, but we’ve broken down the basics to discover which method is best for you! Liquid You should always match the texture of your highlighter to your base, so if you’re using a liquid foundation, a liquid or cream highlighter will make for the easiest blending. To evenly blend and create that beautiful dewy effect, use a stippling brush or a blending brush for the best results. If you’re looking to achieve an all over the face glow, a liquid highlighter is your best bet. Simply mix a few drop of the highlighter in with your foundation or moisturizer and apply it all over your face as usual. Try out: Benefit’s High Beam, $26 Powder Powder highlighter is usually the first choice for beginners, as it’s the easiest to apply. A fan brush is the perfect tool for this product, making it simple to distribute just enough to create a natural glow. If you’re looking for a highlighter with a bit of shimmer to it, the powder formula often provides the most natural looking sparkle. If you use a liquid foundation but want to try out a powder highlighter, put a thin layer of translucent powder on over your foundation beforehand. This will ensure that the powder looks naturally blended. Try out: Mac’s Mineralize Skinfinish. $30 Cream This version of highlighter is usually the most strongly pigmented or shimmery, and because of this, it tends to have the longest staying power. Due to its pigmentation, cream highlighter is easy to overdo, taking a subtle radiance from your cheeks, to an all-over-the-face nightmare. Using your fingers is the best way to ensure a flawless blend with this type of highlighter, and often times these versions come in a stick form, making it perfect for on the go. If you usually find yourself doing your makeup in traffic or in a public restroom, a cream highlighter may be the best option for you and your busy lifestyle! layouts INTRODUCTION
When I applied for my internship at Orlando Style I was required to send in a portfolio showcasing my InDesign and Photoshop skills. Luckily for me, I’m very familiar with both programs, but more so with InDesign rather than Photoshop. In previous internships I’ve done lots of work with magazine layouts, and it’s turned into a fun hobby of mine, so I was excited that they asked to see my work. In addition to writing both magazine and blog articles, I was required to create visually aesthetic layouts to be featured in the print edition of the magazines. I was also required to edit and choose photos that I thought would work best with the articles. My Photoshop skills were limited, so this is where I learned a great deal from my editor. I feel as if my Photoshop knowledge grew drastically throughout the duration of my internship. I liked being asked to do layouts because creating them gave my brain a break at times from the creative pressure of writing articles. Fishing With The Boys
The hunt to hook the perfect dinner at Clearwater Beach By Kelly Lamano
It’s a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning and you’re free from all obligations. No work, no nagging boss or co-workers to worry about, no coffee to spill on your collared shirt. You want to get away for a day with just you and your buddies, so you take a trip to Clearwater Beach. But you don’t just sit around getting sunburned, no. You’re all out on the beach with one common mission: to catch some nice, big snook fish for dinner. You let your feet soak in the white sand as you walk across the hot beach, full of friendly beach-goers, fishing rod and bait in hand, ready to meet your match. You walk across to the palm tree-surrounded entrance of Pier 60. Casting your rod, you stand and patiently wait for something to take advantage of the bait attached. Suddenly, you feel a rough tug on the line, so you hold onto the rod tight, pull back,

and reel the fish in. It’s exactly what you came for: a snook. It’s a decent size, a good 15-pounder, gray with a nice gold tint to it. Your mouth is already watering just thinking about cooking and eating it for dinner. You glance over at your buddies who have been struggling for quite a few minutes, but they’ve got a few catches of their own. Collectively comparing your catches for the day, the group has caught some varying sizes of silver trout, Spanish mackerel and, of course, a large snook. The four of you head back home to Tampa, feeling victorious on the drive back. Music is blasting, friends are chatting and fish is bouncing in tightly closed bags. The fun is over. Now it’s time to get down to cooking business. What to do with today’s catches? You have a few choices between

some scrumptious baked trout, broiled Spanish mackerel and grilled snook fillets. To get started on the baked trout, you’ll need to preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Once that’s ready, sprinkle some salt and pepper over the trout for added flavor. Place 3 slices of bacon on the center of the pan. Next, blend some flour and butter. Place the pan in the oven, uncovered for 35 to 45 minutes. Remove the fillet and you’re good to go. For a quick 10-minute meal, the Spanish mackerel can be prepared by rubbing olive oil on both sides of the fillet. Season each fillet with salt and pepper, and then top it with two slices of lemon. Next, bake the fillets under the broiler for about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the fish before it flakes and serve.

A grill will come in handy for that large snook. Using less seasoning will be beneficial because the snook will be very absorbent to any additives. A dash of garlic, brown sugar and butter will be just enough for that perfect dinner. For this quick meal, melt the butter, then add a very small amount of garlic and brown sugar. Stir this until it is mixed well. Brush the mix onto the fillets, then grill. All of these meals paired with some chips and a nice, cold soda make it the perfect victory dinner after a hot day out on the beach.

SELF-EVALUATION
For the past few months, I’ve been an editorial intern at Orlando Style Magazine in Orlando, Florida. My duties have included writing and researching articles, designing layouts, editing photographs, marketing research, maintenance of various social media sites, and various office tasks. My articles and designs were featured in both Orlando Style and our sister publication, Tampa Style. I worked every Tuesday and Thursday from 11am-3pm. I worked along side another editorial intern and we shared an office together. Upon entering the office on my first day of the internship, I was assigned to write an article on naturally increasing testosterone levels within the first five minutes of me being there. While being assigned a large task so quickly was nerve wrecking, it was also reassuring to know that this internship wouldn’t merely consist of fetching coffee and making copies (neither of which I had to do once!). I obviously had no prior knowledge of anything testosterone related, so that article required quite a bit of research beforehand. The only thing my editor specified about the article was “to make it light hearted and fun.” I believe I accomplished both, incorporating some funny one-liners and quirky facts. This story ended up being a cover story on the June 2013 cover. Not only seeing my work in print but also as a story that was featured on the front of the magazine was a surreal experience. Knowing that I could walk into local stores and pick up a publication that featured my work was an awesome feeling. I was excited to get an internship at a fashion and luxury lifestyle magazine because I knew that would give me the chance to write articles about what I enjoy most, beauty and makeup products. When given the opportunity to choose my own article and blog topics, I typically went with something in the beauty realm. These articles included “Fall Beauty Guide”, “The Growing Popularity of Bath Bombs”, 5 Products You May Not Have in Your Makeup Bag, But Should”, and “Powder, Liquid, or Cream Highlighter. Which One Is Right For You?” I loved that my editor gave me free range of article topics and let me write about what I enjoy most. Having all these articles now published, it’s helped me build a large portfolio for when I start with the job hunt in a few months. I feel like having all these beauty articles will surely aid in getting a job in the beauty editorial industry and give me plenty to talk about during future interviews with possible employers. My boss approached me on day with the assignment to cover the “In Case You Missed It” article. This is a Tampa Style lifestyle piece that is usually covered by a contributing writer. She had a family emergency that month and couldn’t write the piece, so I was asked to do it after. The first piece went well, and then I was asked to cover it again the next month. I was proud that my boss came to me with a task that usually wasn’t handled by interns. Designing layouts on Adobe InDesign was also another favorite task of mine throughout the summer. I knew that I would be doing some work with layouts, but I didn’t realize I would be responsible for creating entire layouts for print during my time as an intern. This was an exciting realization for me! In high school, I was the Editor-in-Chief of my

evaluations yearbook, and it was easily the most rewarding experience from my teenage years. Some of my favorite memories come from spending hours in the computer lab with the other staff members, creating pages and joking together. During that time period is when I learned most of my knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop. I’ve used these skills throughout college for various projects and other internships, but I was thrilled that I would once again be using these desktop publishing programs, but this time for a larger audience. The most important thing I learned from this aspect of my internship was the Photoshop duties I was required to complete. As I’ve said before, this is the area that I was weakest in and had the biggest room for growth. My editor taught me some valuable skills for editing photos to ensure that they’re at the best quality when they go to print that I didn’t previously have. My least favorite duty I was asked to do during my internship was marketing research. Some days I was required to research companies in certain areas of business that may be interested in buying advertisement space from us. This entailed hours of tedious research for companies and for their phone numbers, then entering them into an excel spreadsheet. Once I had exhausted all my resources and compiled a large enough list, I would then send out an email to each individual business, approaching them with the idea of buying space in our magazine for advertising. The benefit of doing this task is that it helped me realize I have no interest in going into any sort of sales job for advertising. It entailed long hours of me staring at a computer screen and mindlessly entering numbers into a computer program, which made the day go by extremely slowly. Luckily, I only had to do this a handful of times throughout the internship, but when I was asked to complete these tasks, I did not enjoy it very much. An additional task that I found enjoyable was the maintenance of our various social media sites. I spent time using the companies Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest accounts. I would go through and find students and other people in the area of Orlando or Tampa that I think may be interested in our publication, and then followed them with the hopes that they would follow us back. This was rewarding because every time I signed on I was able to see our follower count grow and grow as a result of my work. When using the Orlando Style Tumblr account, I would take previous articles that were published in the magazine and post them as text posts. I was also responsible for tagging them appropriately to ensure high traffic and readership on the blog. Lastly, and probably my favorite form of social media that I used, was the magazine’s Pinterest account. I personally have never had a Pinterest account before, so it took some playing around get used to it, but once I got the hang of it I loved updating it. We have many various boards such as Women’s Apparel, Men’s Apparel, Shoes, Travel, Food, Accessories, etc. I was required to go through and find pictures that I believed our readers would like, and repin them to our various boards. This was a fun task for me because it let me use my sense of style and interests and give the magazine my own flair. I was also asked to increase the number of followers we had on EVALUATIONS 26
that site so that we could use Pinterest as an advertising leverage in the future. Towards the end of my internship, I was invited to a company-advertising event at the Rolex store in The Mall at Millenia in Orlando. This was a cocktail attire event that was held by both our magazine and the watch company, Rolex. This was a great opportunity to mingle with important local figures and get to know my fellow staff members on a more personal level. Not all of the company interns were invited, so it was nice to know that I was thought of as an appropriate person to attend the party to represent the company. I feel as though I was a very successful and helpful intern this summer at Orlando Style. I was always on time and never called in sick to miss a day. When I was at the office, I was always productive and made sure I completed all tasks to the best of my ability. I was always dressed appropriately for my work environment, as well. However, it turns out that this is not the end of the road for me at Orlando Style. On my last day of interning, my boss approached me with the offer to continue at Orlando Style as a contributing writer. I will be assigned articles remotely to be published in the magazine. I was offered this position after writing two of the “In Case You Missed It” pieces. I’ll be in London studying abroad and submitting articles remotely during the fall, but when I get back to the states I’ll be attending social events to cover for the magazine. I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity and I’m excited to continue on with the company not as an intern, but as a real contributing writer. Words: 1471
