SEQUENCE TYPE: STUDIO ARCH 100A
LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO, CA DATE SUBMISSION: OCTOBER 2012 THROUGH AN INTIMATE ANALYSIS OF THE SITE AND ITS SURROUNDING URBAN FABRIC, SEQUENCE RECONSIDERS THE OUTDOOR STAIR AS AN OCCUPIED PUBLIC SPACE WITHIN THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT. THE CITY GRID AND ITS INHABITANTS SERVE AS THE FOUNDATION OF ANALYSIS WHILE A SERIES OF OBSERVED ACTIVITIES ARE MARKED IN THEIR LOCATIONS. A CINEMATIC STRIP OF ACTIVITY LAYS OUT THE FORMAL LANGUAGE OF THE PROJECT. FOLDED AND LIFTED, THE STRIP REVEALS AN UNDERGROUND SPACE FOR CONVERSATION, GATHERINGS, AND FILM SCREENINGS. ASIDE FROM PHYSICALLY CONNECTING MOVEMENT FROM CONNETICUT ST. TO THE POTRERO HILL LIBRARY, SEQUENCE CONSIDERS THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISUAL CONNECTIVITY WITH THE SURROUNDING CITY BY PROVIDING FRAMED VIEWS ALONG ITS PATH.

URBAN LIFE REQUIRES A CONTINUALLY SHIFTING SET OF NEEDS AND IN TURN, INFRASTRUCTURES TO SUPPORT THOSE NEEDS, AS A RESPONSE TO SAN FRANCISCO’S GROWING FOOD CULTURE, THE GOOD FOOD CENTER IS WHERE THE RESEARCH, PRODUCTION, AND CONSUMPTION OF FOOD CONVERGE. CLASSROOMS, LABS, KITCHENS, AND FOOD TRUCKS INTERESECT UNDER ONE ROOF IN ORDER TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE LEARNING AND CULINARY EXPERIENCE. THE DESIGN OF GOOD FOOD FOCUSES ON TWO CENTRAL ATRIA THAT SHIFT FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR, CORRESPONDING TO INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMATIC NEEDS, THESE SHIFTS INCREASE OR DECREASE THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT, HEAT, AND NATURAL EXPOSURE TO EACH AREA, CREATING APPROPRIATE MICROCLIMATES.

BLUM CENTER FOR DEVELOPING ECONOMIES TYPE: CASE STUDY ARCH 160: CONSTRUCTION TEAM: MICHELLE BADR JUSTIN AUGUSTIN KYLE YAMAMOTO LOCATION: BERKELEY, CA DATE SUBMISSION: APRIL 2014 A BUILDING’S EXTERIOR WALL IS ONE OF ITS PRIMARY COMPONENTS, PERFORMING IN VARIOUS WAYS TO SEPARATE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. AT THE BLUM CENTER FOR DEVELOPING ECONOMIES, LOCATED ON THE UC BERKELEY CAMPUS, NATURAL FORCES SUCH AS WIND, WATER, AND FIRE ARE THOUGHTFULLY COUNTERED THROUGH A PRESSUREEQUALIZED WALL DESIGN AND WOODEN RAINSCREEN CLADDING. THROUGH OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS, THIS CASE STUDY PROVIDES VISUAL REPRESENTATION ON HOW THE BUILDING ENVELOPE PROTECTS ITSELF FROM SUCH NATURAL FORCES.

DATE SUBMISSION: MAY 2014 THE CULTURE OF CONSUMERISM HAS CONSTRUCTED 4.6 MILLION RETAIL STORES IN CALIFORNIA, COMPRISED OF CONSTANT MATERIAL EXCHANGES AND INDULGENCES, BUT LEAVES NO SPACE FOR SPIRITUAL REFLECTION. AS A WOMAN OF PRACTICE WHO HAS WORKED IN RETAIL FOR YEARS, FINDING A WAY TO ADAPT DAILY PRAYERS TO THE DEPARTMENT STORE WAS NECESSARY. THE EXPERIENCE INSPIRED A SERIES OF INSTALLATIONS FOR OTHERS TO BENEFIT FROM. A GUIDEMAP OF DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO LEADS VISITORS AND SHOPPERS TO CHANGING ROOM LOCATIONS AND HANDBAGS EQUIPPED WITH THE ESSENTIALS NEEDED FOR PRAYERS OF ALL FAITHS. CHANGING ROOMS CREATES SACRED SPACE WITHIN SECULAR SETTINGS IN ORDER TO EASE RECONCILING INTERNAL IDENTITY IN AN EXTERNAL SOCIETY WHILE CALLING ATTENTION TO THE GREATER POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES THAT REQUIRE SUCH A PLACE.
