FALL 2014 PORTFOLIO

1A_PONCHO Partner: Elaine Choi The main goal of this poncho was Minimal design combined with function. The six ringed layers of museum board are connected by cable ties only at two points: above the left shoulder, and below the right arm. This allows the layers to respond to the wearer’s movements by bouncing up and down with each step.

Partner: Elaine Choi

The pochĂŠ represents the spatial movements of the poncho in rotation as a carving through a block of mass. The exploration of the shifting and shearing of the poncho through carving helped in creating new dynamic masses that demonstrate this movement from all angles.

The stairs are a further explortation of the dynamic masses created in the pochĂŠ. The rotation and shearing movements are preserved in the staircase system that connects the shifting open volumetric space serving as landings.

2A_CASE STUDY The Stahl House, also known as Case Study House #22, by Pierre Koenig can be analyzed in different ways. The approaches represented here are the grid system, proportionality, and circulation through the L-shaped structure including the pool.

2B_MONTAGE

Partners: Alan Ong, Tara Nuqul, Ecenur Menki This program insertion into Mies Van Der Rohe’s Crown Hall Building on IIT’s campus takes into account its 10 x 10 ft proportionality through a grid system that accomodate enough space for the cofee shop and auditorium. The jigsaw skin of the auditorium and the roof demonstrate this grid systems in smaller proportions. In essence, the entire program is a smaller interpretation of the presence of the H-beams that compose crown hall, which allowed for the freedom of designing the floor plans.

3A_TERRITORY This territory plot can be divided into three different triangular sections, two of which slope downwards, while the middle is flat. IT is located on agricultural land on which vineyards grow.

3B_LIVE/WORK Villa Intaglio The main driving force behind the shaping of this design was the L-shaped road running through the heart of the territory plot. Although it initially seemed staggering to the design process, it led ways for other kinds of approaches to creating a live/work environment in which these two aspects of life were combined through carving into the landscape, yet were seemingly separated through the extrusions of the more open public and more enclosed private spaces. The main connection between the two is the semi-public wine cellar, in which wine is stored and available for tasting for more serious buyers. Casual visitors may go to the open bistro seating area, where people can order either indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather — indoor seating is also available underground. Whether indoors or outdoors, people may enjoy the scenic views of the vineyards or the carved space that has certainly left a mark in the land.
