DESIGN inspiration

Los Banos, California (opposite page, bottom photo), where Wool Growers restaurant is located, is a very simple town. It’s a place where you can go drive in open space for miles without seeing another car; you can stop your truck in the middle of the street to chat with your neighbor; and you’re guaranteed to see someone you know at the grocery store. I wanted to keep a simplicity in the design of Wool Growers. I was striving to create a refreshed look while not departing from the nostalgic, welcoming feel that you expect. The old logo was nonexistent, but the same sign has been hanging outside for decades. Regarding the restaurant’s name, I knew I wanted to include a sheep. Wool Growers isn’t just a name, it is literally a place where local farmers stop in after a long day’s work or for a break midday. I felt that I needed to keep the sheep classic, not modern or abstract, in order to appeal to the everyday patron of the restaurant. The scarf around the sheep’s neck is an ode to Basque culture and traditional dress.

LOGO structure

The design of the new logo for Wool Growers is centered around the hand drawn sheep head adorned with a traditional Basque scarf. The typeface was selected for its casual, almost hand-done appeal. The structure and spacing of the Wool Growers logo is determined by the uppercase “F” from the subhead and the lowercase “s” from the logotype, both from the typeface Allejo. The logo and logotype can work separately or together, as shown on the facing page. There are many variations which are outlined on page 10 of this manual.
