MICHELLE LI ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 2016-2017
Hello, My name is Michelle Li and I am a second year
architecture student studying at the University of Waterloo. My design approach focuses on spatial sensation and
exploration through materiality and light. The following is a collection of projects that reflect my passion and joy for architecture and design. Thank you and enjoy.

PINEWOOD LIBRARY LOCATION SUPERVISOR COURSE
ST. CLAIR AVE W, TORONTO, ON DONALD MCKAY 1B DESIGN STUDIO
Rhino, Maxwell Render, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign The library is connected to the larger context of the city. Situated among the storefronts of St. Clair West and bounded by suburbs, Pinewood Library merges the boundary between the residential and commercial communites. Two points of access are given, one from the businesses on St. Clair and the other from the local suburbia. By providing additional amenities, including a bike repair shop and makerspace, the library opens itself to the public realm. The main entrance is carved underground, creating a tiered outdoor reading zone to engage pedestrians; yet is it tucked away from the bustling streetscape. Hovering above the stairs is a multipurpose room that substitutes as an assembly hall, while more private carrels for studying are sheltered within the book stacks.

Pinewood Library invites shoppers along St. Clair and residents in the surrounding community to come together in a common setting. The outdoor seating area creates an extended threshold to the library as well as a joint space for reading, conversation, and repose.

Saudade [Portugeuse]: a melancholic longing for something lost in space or time, a wistfulness for phenomena that may not even exist Inspired by three cinematic precedents, In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-wai), Persona (Ingmar Bergman), and Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky), Saudade illustrates the sensation in each sequence as a spatial fragment. Matertial models and a maquette was built to develop the atmoshpere in materiality using concrete with plaster aggregrates, plexiglass, and tulle. The durational maquette embodies the nature and affect of these spaces to express imtimacy, melancholy, and serenity. Each sequence has a intimacy similiar to watching television through a stranger’s window.

PERSONA is composed of tonal extremities with a shifting array of grays and silhouettes to create an ethereal quality.
IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE has a voyeuristic atmosphere that unfolds into a montage of fleeting moments framed, then obscured, by architectonic space.

FUSION LOCATION SUPERVISOR COURSE
WATER ST N, CAMBRIDGE, ON RICHARD ANDRIGHETTI 1A DESIGN STUDIO
Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop, Model Making The need for a maker space in downtown Cambridge is evident for a site that is predominately made up of commercial shops and restaurants. The breakthrough of this project came through the parti, with the collision and merging of two volumes for work and living. The bedroom is pushed to the back to provide privacy for its habitants while workshop spaces are located near the entrance to invite the local community and visitors into the space. The building is directly adjacent to the Grand River, so most of the west side is made of glazing to introduce views and a sense of openness to the otherwise narrow space. The narrow composition allow the habitant to circulate through the building in a linear fashion from waking up in the morning, working, and then returning to bed at night. LIVE SLEEP

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY SYSTEM
Self House is an off-site research station that aims towards carbon neutral design. Located north of Peace River and east of the Rocky Mountains, Fort St. John experiences frigid winters but is also one of the sunniest cities in BC. The severely cold temperature calls for a design that maximizes passive solar gain, insulation, and thermal mass. Self House uses renewable energy sources, including a gerothermal energy system that supplies energy for a radiant floor system as well as solar hot water collectors and photovoltaic panels.

SHARE SPACE LOCATION
RYERSON UNIVERSITY, TORONTO, ON
TIMBER FEVER COMPETITION 2017 COLLABORATION WITH DIEGO BUSTAMANTE, KIMBERLY GROVU, FADY RIAD, CELINA QIU Rhino, Drafting, Wood-working and Fabrication Share space is a public, outdoor reading room, built with timber, for sharing books and ideas. The modular design is modelled after the appearance of books on a shelf, while the transparency and cladding of the structure creates areas for both public and private seating. The cross-disciplinrary, cross-university team consists of Civil Engineering and Architecture students from the universities of Toronto, Ryerson, and Waterloo. Working collaboratively to make a both structurally-sound and occupiable space; the construction and design of this book share station was completed in the span of four days.

PLUS LOCATION SUPERVISOR COURSE
ANYWHERE, EVERYWHERE TERRI MEYER BOAKE 1B ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
CISC COMPETITION 2016-17 ENTRY COLLABORATION WITH LAUREN PATRICK Rhino, Maxwell Render, Illustrator, Photoshop Plus reimagines the potential of paved public spaces. The paved ground acts as a membrane for public space; partitioning the built environment, allocated avenues of travel, and serving as a system of exterior flooring. Whether by foot, bike, or car, we can often find ourselves rushing through these spaces to reach the destinations beyond. Making use of a modular kit of parts, Plus aims to extract the potential life that exists in parking lots. The breadth of the pavement demands a building system unconstained by site, size, and program. With the use of modular shapes, a easily assembled tent-like infrastructure, and flexible attachments, the project encourages community curation and customization.
Plus can be assembled anywhere to aid in the assembly of everyone.

The lightweight structure on temporality as well as being customizable. Responding the the context of its location, Plus aims to engage the community with its design, assembly, to operation. This concept was originally inspired by the idea of night market, which can be quickly assembled before dusk then disappears again in the morning. Most connections are either pinned or welded as components to allow for simple, manual construction. Designed for disassembly and flexibility, Plus provokes people to gather in an unconventional space, such as an parking lot, and transforms it to a place of pedestrian activity.
