REFRESH SILARA KANGSAR BOUTIQUE HOTEL - Urban Greenery in a Boutique Hotel 3rd Year Design Studio Year | 2016 Location | Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia Type | Recreational

Royal town of Kuala Kangsar is located at the downstream of Kangsar river that flows into the Perak River. It is known in the Malaysian history as the site where the first Conference of Rulers, the Durbar, was held in 1897. By the 1890’s, the growth of the tin mining towns of Ipoh and Taiping had eclipsed Kuala Kangsar, but it remained until today as one of the most attractive Malay royal capitals.

NATURE REVIVAL

Silara Kangsar serves as a symbol of reviving the nature in Kuala Kangsar, not only for the bare site where the building will be built, but also for the town of Kuala Kangsar. The rainforest idea of the hotel triggers engagement of guests with nature,. Hence besides enhancing the environment, guests will also feel relaxed in the hotel.

COMMUNITY REVIVAL

Silara Kangsar also pays attention to the surrounding community living besides only their guests. Community involvement could be seen in the hotel where job opportunities were provided for the surrounding residents.

IDENTITY REVIVAL

Silara Kangsar incorporates local architecture style into the building design, allowing the hotel to become an identity of Kuala Kangsar.

PROBLEM STATEMENT According to the report “Laporan Ringkasan Eksekutif Rancangan Tempatan Daerah Kuala Kangsar 2020”, it is known that most of the land in Kuala Kangsar remained as forest. From the pie chart on the left, forest shows its significance in Kuala Kangsar. Yet most of the main tourist destinations in Kuala Kangsar features more buildings than the green in Kuala Kangsar. The lacking of ‘greenery’ is the result of compacted rigid buildings around the area. Hence the introducing of greens in the hotel allows more “breathing space” for the people to escape from the urban jungle and relax in the hotel. The project was

URBAN AtNALYSIS

inspired by Malaysian rainforest, where the idea of the design is to engage the people with nature. Relationship of nodes and site - strategic location allowed the movement between nodes

Permeability to site - Accessible from the town via various modes of transportation

Figure ground study - Relationship between built and unbuilt areas of Kuala Kangsar

The name of the hotel Silara Kangsar emerged from the idea and background of Kuala Kangsar royalty. “Silara” carries the meaning of crown in the old Malay language whlist “Kangsar“ aids in recognizing the identity of Kuala Kangsar.

Hierachy was the main element in the design of this hotel. The hotel mimics the idea of a rainforest, where the higher it goes the area of receiving sunlight is more dominant. Hence public and private spaces were zoned according to various levels in the hotel.

Deluxe rooms have different bathroom layout and bath tub to enjoy the exterior landscape scenery.

REVIVAL KUALA KANGSAR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE Reviving the Community through Living Heritage 3rd Year Design Studio Year | 2015 Location | Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia Type | Institutional, Educational

Kuala Kangsar, a old royal town, emerged in the past due to its geographical location at the confluence of two river, namely Perak River and Kangsar River. The meeting point of both rivers marks the beginning of the town and the long historical background behind it. In Kuala Kangsar, the living heritages are represented by the crafting culture in this area such as clay pottery craft knwon as labu sayong, traditional malay weapon keris making, local embodery art and so on. While Kuala Kangsar image is pictured by these local cultures, they are facing dilemma in lacking of inheritance in younger generations. This is caused by the ignorance of people who are not aware that preserving these traditions are ways to maintain the identity of a place. The bonding between people are also not as strong as the olden days due to the rapid development of the town. hence, kuala kangsar interpretive centre carries the intention of bringing people together by engaging local cultures in the centre. it is designed as a meeting point between the locals and visitors who share similar objectives of understanding kuala kangsar better. the stories of kuala kangsar will be then unveiled

DISTINCT PETALING JAYA COMMUNITY LIBRARY - Community infusion between contrasting spaces 2nd Year Design Studio Year | 2015 Location | Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia Type | Institutional

PJ community library is located in downtown Petaling Jaya surrounded by urban contextual challenges such as existing lrt station and line, shopping mall, actively used green feilds and clubs. The planning of the library grows from the dynamic flow of the public and the usual function of a library. The spaces are then divided according to the functions of the library into two distinctive areas, which are the active public spaces and the calm studying area. The active, zero threshold public spaces will be visible from the streets, understandable and welcoming while the traditional, serene library atmosphere can be found nearer to the feild, screening the calm and comtemplation area from the busy traffic. The interplay between the exteriors and interiors allows these contrasts to complement each other, creating constant interaction between spaces physically and visually, for example the use of glass wall in between the contrasts. The point of complexity exists when these extremes exist in combination, and contributes to the rediscovery of spaces between boundaries, hybrid spaces, relationship and tensions.

THE SCAFFOLD INN BACKPACKERS’ HOSTEL AT JALAN SULTAN - A nostalgic tale in the urban jungle 2nd Year Design Studio Year | 2015 Location | Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Type | Urban Infill

Sultan Street formed Chinatown together with Petaling Street and Tun HS Lee Street when Kuala Lumpur first strated as a tin mining area. It was neglected as an important street until the land aqusition of the new MRT project. Hence the intention of the travellers’ inn is to tell the story of Jalan Sultan as one of the earliest developed area in the past. Shophouse layout with inner courtyards was applied in the structure, circular hollow sections resembles the scaffolding tubes in gravel pump method in tin mining. The element of scaffoding serves as a place maker in architecture , leaving architectural imprints such as the buildings and culture of the immigrants back then. Communal spaces such as the common rooms and open bedroom plan at the inn encourages people to interact, sharing travel experiences as if they are narrating a story of life.

CHIMES Chair for student business kiosk 1st Year Design Studio Year | 2014 Type | Furniture Design

The chair is inspired by chimes in which playful linear elements become the structural and sculptural elements of the design. The curved silhouette of the seat and back rest - defined by the cut edges of the timber - transforms when the chair is unfolded into a perfectly flay plane. Based on the standard timber length of 3000mm, the design minimises material wastage and construction time. The organic form of the chair emphasizes the comfort of users while creating a product which is both interactive and attractive
