KINETIC SKYLIGHT The project consisted of designing and building a kinetic skylight, through the investigation of motion, natural light and optical devices. For 5 weeks, our team of four members developed the winning prototype -selected out of six- to be fabricated in real scale. This design explored a play of transforming geometry that goes from closed, flat rectangles to open, three dimensional triangles. The fabrication was carried out by a group of 8 people for the following 5 weeks, producing a fully functional, digitally operated skylight consisting of Wi-Fi transmitted controls and Raspberry Pi card, complete with its code and remote interface.

TALIK ANCHOR EXHIBITED AT FUTURIZEx’s UCLA NEXTFEST
EXTREME MICRO-LIVING The Talik Anchor is a one-person micro-living unit designed for extreme cold conditions in the Antartic Tundra. The submarine research pod sinks down and screws into the bottom of the lake, the talik, which is a warmer environment than the freezing tundra above. For 5 weeks, our team of 6 solved every aspect of what was, until then, only a conceptual design. This included strategizing and planning the construction of a real-scale mock-up which we fabricated for the following 5 weeks. The construction process entailed mostly CNC milling and assembling plywood, finalizing with detailing the interior, including furniture and LED lighting.

PROSTHETIC SKIN The skin is an amazing organ, but is not without limitations. In some of these limitations, we saw opportunities for enhancement: 1. It is not as efficient protecting us thermally as those of other animals. 2. It does not provide structural support to the skeletal system. BGB 322 is a prosthetic skin meant to help you adapt to any piece of furniture and complement your working or resting activities. The air cushions also provide different levels of thermal insulation. The suit is 100% casted silicone and it’s divided into 5 areas that inflate individually in the areas where you need most support or comfort. This was a 10-week project developed by a team of 4 members.

HEAT
EXHIBITED AT CES AT UCLA ANDERSON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
HEAT + ________ In this materials lab the goal was to turn trash into gold. For 5 weeks we explored 3 materials and 2 techniques -paper, plastic, foam casting and laminating- in combination with heat to produce new materials or new applications for them. The second phase consisted of developing the experiment with most potential: Panels of laminated plastic bags fused together by ironing. The studies to find the best fabrication method included robotic ironing, hot stone press and -successfully- pressed thermoforming. The laminated sheets were vaccuum-formed into different shapes to create panels for applications such as facades or ceilings, thanks to their resistance and waterproof properties.

FOAM + HEAT Candle wax melted with a heat gun on top of a block of white styrofoam (EPS). Wax and foam melt together into a surface layer of rich textures that is water tight and rigid, yet lightweight.

PLASTIC + HEAT Plastic bags of multiple types are cut open and layered. Ironing over a sheet of parchment paper melts the bags together into a homogeneous sheet of variable rigidity depending on the amount of layers. The result is a resistant, transluscent and water tight panel that can later be vaccuum-formed into a design.

VOCAL SYNTHEZISER As the singer of our “SupraBand, the challenge was to design and fabricate an instrument to work in collaboration with the voice. The wearable synthesizer uses Arduino in conjunction with Ableton Live to serve as a midi and audio controller. The design intends to use the wires as the fabric that weaves the wearable together. 3D printed elements serve minimally as housing for the electronic components. Buttons on the fingertips trigger samples and stretch rubber sensor loops provide a varying range of assigned voice effects.

MERCADO CENTRAL
SAN JOSÉ CENTRAL MARKET The current central market of downtown San JosÊ is an old, enclosed, dark building in an area of the city that has become chaotic, dangerous and dirty. The main activity around the market is transit of buses and pedestrians transferring routes, but the market itself does not generate any relations between people or the place. This project’s objective is to reactivate the Mercado Central as an urban center of commerce, interaction, reunion and rest as well as providing a pleasant journey for the many pedestrians on their daily commutes. This is achieved through different combinations of the concepts of: permeability, rupture vs. connection and positive vs. negative space.

CAPILLA DE LA PAZ
PHYSICAL TO SPIRITUAL The University for Peace is an international institution of higher education for peace. The campus is located in the mountains of Santa Ana, San José, where it hides amongst trees in a secluded rural area. The university requires a small chapel of no specific religious denomination and a library, both spaces for spiritual and intellectual enlightenment and growth. The design is a result of studies and experiments of light and proportion through the golden ratio, supported by the application of these concepts on Le Corbusier’s Notre Dame Du Haut and Tadao Ando’s Church of the Light.

ENERGY RESEARCH & CULTURAL CENTER The Research Center will serve as support for the Costa Rica Institute of Electricity’s (ICE) Eolic Park on the Escazú Mountain Range, which sits at the far background of the project site and serves as inspiration for the form of the project. The intent is to preserve some of the open, green space still left in the area by developing a project that emerges from the natural landscape rather than imposing a structure on it. The project is the headquarters for continued R&D of energy solutions for the Central Valley. It is also a public place for education and recreation, hosting lectures and classes. The project includes auditorium, museum and library, among other spaces for cultural, social and official events.

CALIFORNIA 2015 PERSONAL PROJECT
PIRANESI RECONSIDERED
DRAWING PROJECT This was a personal drawing project, studying the art of Giovanni B. Piranesi, the Italian artist famous for his etchings of Rome and fictitious “prisons”. Piranesi was a master in lighting, shadows, perspective and designing imaginary spaces. These were the skills to be studied and applied by drawing outward from one of his originals and creating new spaces to complete a 20”x30” composition. One of the main goals was to reach his level of tracing style and density. Eventually the original in the center was removed and the space was filled with spaces in a style greatly averted from his own.
