the Hornets, as the saying goes, don’t rebuild, they simply reload. Returning to lead Saline in 2010 will be four-year varsity performer and senior captain Peter Spitter. “He has a lot of experience,” Williams-Hoak said. “He’s playing well. And he’s doing a wonderful job being a captain.” Also counted on to play well this season for the Hornets will be juniors Keith Long and Colin Spauder. “They both have a lot of varsity experience,” WilliamsHoak said. Sophomore Jackson Lambert will also be expected to be among the leaders this year for the Hornets. “He has a tremendous amount of potential,” WilliamsHoak said. Overall, Saline will officially carry 23 golfers this season, with 12 playing varsity and 11 on the JV squad. The Hornets will also have a developmental team with seven players par-

semifinalist a year ago at No. 2 singles, Ho will be one of Saline’s top players this season. Both Shipman and Ho earned All-State accolades last year. Junior Shanna Cooper will return at No. 4 singles for the Hornets this season. “She had a strong year last year,” BeDell said. A newcomer of note to the Saline program this season will be freshman Mary Hanna. “Mary is nationally ranked
ticipating. Williams-Hoak said Saline would have two definite strengths this season. “Our top three guys and the experience they have will be a strength,” she said. “And our strength for the future is our sophomores and younger players.” Normally a frontrunner for the SEC crown, the Hornets this season are picked lower in the standings heading into this year. “We’re not the favorite to win the conference,” Williams-Hoak said. “That’s good motivation for us. We hope to surprise some people.” Temperance-Bedford, which brings everybody back from last season’s state-qualifying team, is the top pre-season choice to capture the SEC title. “We recently played Bedford in a scrimmage and only lost by one,” Williams-Hoak said. Williams-Hoak brings a wealth of athletic experience to the table for Saline. An Ohio native, she attended the University of Michigan on a track and basketball scholarship. After dropping
basketball to concentrate on track, Williams-Hoak won four Big Ten javelin titles, earned All-American honors and competed in the Olympic trials. After her collegiate career, she turned her focus to golf and in 1988 won the Michigan Open championship. After winning the Michigan Open, WilliamsHoak turned pro, competing for many years with the best players in the world on the LPGA tour. With such an impressive athletic resume, it isn’t hard for Williams-Hoak to gain the attention and respect of her players. “Especially after they see I can out-drive them,” she said, with a chuckle. “I enjoy coaching.” Williams-Hoak would enjoy coaching even more if the Hornets achieved all of their goals this season. “We want to win our conference, make it through districts and regionals and get back to state,” she said. The Division 1 state match is June 11 through 12 at Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University.
and will have a big impact,” BeDell said. In doubles, seniors Emma Easom and Megan Geiger return at the No. 1 flight for the Hornets this year. “They were one of the strongest teams in the state last season and are even stronger this year,” BeDell said. Others expected to contribute in doubles this season for Saline include senior captain Julie Blackhall, juniors Haley Breedveld, Kaitlin Sheets and Catherine Bernard, sophomores Heather Vogt and Allie Fitzpatrick and freshmen Darby Molloy and Margaret Sheets. BeDell said the strength of this year’s squad would be its
depth. “We added a couple key players and others have stepped it up a couple notches,” he said. “There has been a lot of playing and (competing in) tournaments over the past year. Our maturity is also a strength. And our common goals are a strength, too.” BeDell said Saline’s goals this year are to practice with focus and intensity each day. “We want to compete each day as well as we can and as hard as we can and enjoy the process of the season,” he said. “We play arguably the toughest schedule in the state. Our ultimate goals are to win our regional and to win the state finals.”

Joe Lipa
Allie Thornton
Saline’s Joe Lipa has had an impressive start to the track and field season so far this year for the Hornets. The senior standout was one of the top performers for Saline at the indoor Eagle Invitational at Eastern Michigan University. Lipa bested the field in the 1,600-meter run breaking the tape first with a time of 4:35.53. Though no team scores were kept at the meet, the Hornets ran well earning many first-place finishes.
Saline’s Allie Thornton has helped lead the Hornets’ girls’ water polo team to a strong start in the 2010 season. The senior captain scored three goals to spark Saline to a 13-9 victory over Birmingham Seaholm. Behind Thornton, the Hornets have dominated most opponents in the pool this season. Saline is currently unbeaten at 11-0 and ranked No. 2 in the state polls.
