Neighbor alerts sleeping family to house fire By Art Aisner Special Writer

An early-morning fire destroyed a Saline home Tuesday, but a family of five and their pet are safe, largely the result of quick action by an alert neighbor, officials said. Members of the Saline Area Fire Department responded to the 300 block of Wallace Drive at about 12:45 a.m. and found a garage and a sunroom attached

to the rear of the home fully engulfed in flames, Chief Craig Hoeft said. A family of five that was inside when the fire started was evacuated by the time fire crews arrived. No one was injured. Hoeft said he later learned that a neighbor was awoken by the sound of the flames and saw the roof burning on the home next door. He ran outside while his wife called 9-1-1 and began

banging on the door. When no one answered, he began frantically banging on the windows and screamed, Hoeft said. “They were lucky because the fire was still on the exterior and hadn’t set off the fire alarms yet,” Hoeft said. The fire extended from the single-car garage to the screened-in porch and into the attic. It took roughly 40

Return stolen bike Just imagine the theft of your child’s birthday present. It stinks. It hurts. It makes you angry. Our son, Mike. turned 13 years old this week and on Saturday we took him to Walmart to pick out a new bike. By Sunday afternoon, it was stolen from the Saline library bike rack. Mike had his new bike just slightly less than 24 hours. He and his friends were at the library from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. April 11. We hope that the person who took this bike will be as incensed with guilt as we are with anger and disappointment. If the family of this person notices their child has a new,

tain Native American tradtitions were contributing factors to the move. “A lot of our traditions were not really being respected because of the bureaucracy of U of M,” she said. The program handed out at the event outlines some of the concerns. It cites frustration that the powwow was becoming something of a marketing gimmick for the university. “It (the powwow) should be for our community and our students, not for Ann Arbor residents and university recruitment brochures,” the program reads. “Our powwow should be treated as a meaningful community celebration, not as a showcase for diversity.” The statement also outlines other major reasons for the relocation. “Issues with Michigamua, mismanagement of the tuition waver, refusal to return our ancestral remains, tenure our faculty, and respect and support our staff and students have led to a strong distrust for the university.” Many U of M departments and organizations continue to support the annual powwow event, and university officials recently promised to return some 1,400 sets of Native American remains currently housed at the Museum of Anthropology. However, it is unclear if the event will remain in Saline indefinitely. Despite the concerns, Pasfield said she is happy being a part of “one of the biggest and most successful powwows in the region.” We’re especially thankful this year to all the people that have come together to make this relocated powwow such a success,” she said.
