Old Chrysler local fixture in parades, memories By Steven Howard Heritage Newspapers

As Memorial Day approaches, many people begin to think of parades of years past. And if they think hard enough, they might remember the car currently owned by Melvin Dailey, which has been a fixture in various events and processions for more than 80 years. Dailey says his 1927 Chrysler 60 only has 18,000 miles on it and has been fortunate enough to have only four owners, all of whom have been methodical about maintaining it properly, since rolling off the assembly line. “The car has only been rained on twice in its life,” he said. Dailey said James Blain of Findlay, Ohio, purchased the car new in 1927, and it quickly became his pride and joy. “He was a bachelor that lived with his mother, and that car was the love of his life,” Dailey said. Dailey said Blain worked close by at a filling station, and walked to work to keep miles on the car low.

Dailey said a Chrysler of this type would have been quite an expense for Blain, costing twice as much as a contemporary Ford model. “This is what bankers and grandpas drove,” he said. Bill Reynolds, also of Findlay, knew Blain and how well he took care of the Chrysler, so he purchased the car from Blain’s estate when Blain died. After owning it for 19 years, Bruce Petty purchased the car from him, bringing it to Milan. As it turned out, Petty was a neighbor of Daily’s. Petty knew Dailey was a car enthusiast, so after owning the Chrysler for 10 years, he simply transferred the deed at no cost. Dailey said he and all of the previous owners have maintained the car so well because they share a genuine sense of what the car means to all those who have seen it in parades and festivals. The Chrysler also takes on especially important significance as Memorial Day approaches, with the first owner having been speculated to have driven Civil War veterans in several parades. Dailey said he continues a high

degree of maintenance, even though he actually drives the car on the street only a few hundred miles a year. “I change the oil once a year whether it needs it or not,” he said. Those who attend the BackStreet Cruizers car shows in Milan on Thursday nights are likely to see the blue Chrysler at some point this summer. Dailey said he also trailers the car to several other shows, having much success given the car’s pristine originality. “My favorite shows are at Greenfield Village and Flint,’ he said. “I don’t care if I win. I’ve already got half a dozen (awards), probably a little more.” Dailey said he knows he has a treasure, and though he owns several other vintage cars, he knows his Chrysler 60 is a true diamond in the rough. “They didn’t make that many of those, and there aren’t that many left.
