EMU theatre to put on ‘Pippi Longstocking’ Eastern Michigan University Theatre will ring in the holiday season with a children’s classic “Pippi Longstocking.” Directed by Pam Cardell with music direction by R. MacKenzie Lewis, the comedy with music will be performed at 7 p.m. Dec. 3, 4, 9 and 10 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 4, 5 and 11. All performances will take place in the Quirk Theatre in the Quirk Dramatic Arts Building located at the intersection of East Circle Drive and Best Hall on EMU’s campus in Ypsilanti. “Pippi Longstocking” is based on the well-known story of the same name by Astrid Lindgren. Adapted for the stage by Thomas W. Olson and with music by Roberta Carlson, this production has Pippi singing and dancing. Precocious, pigtailed and plucky describes beloved hero-
ine Pippi Longstocking. Pippi charges headlong into adventure as she awaits the return of her long-lost pirate father. Making friends, thwarting thieves and outrunning the children’s welfare board – Pippi’s outrageous antics abound in this family-friendly musical comedy for audiences ages 6 and over. Ticket prices for Pippi Longstocking are $15 regular admission, $12 for students, $9 for MAINSTAGE patrons and $7 for children ages 6 to 12. School of Social Work turns 90 years old The University of Michigan’s School of Social Work will kick off a yearlong celebration Friday of its 90th anniversary during a full-day celebration that will include a keynote address by social activist Michael Sherraden. Sherraden, who was named to TIME Magazine’s annual list of the World’s 100 Most Influential People earlier this year, is a Washington University professor known for his pioneering work on asset building for low-income people.
The founder and director of Center for Social Development at the school, located in St. Louis, will speak from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m. on the topic “Assetbased policy to fight poverty.” Sherraden’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion that will include experts such as Trina Shanks and Ismael Ahmed, director of the Michigan Department of Human Services. Other events scheduled to take place include a performance by the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, which will perform
“Speak For Yourself ! Young Detroiters Talk About Race.” Featuring a mosaic of different voices — including African, Arab and Latin American teenagers — the play imagines a future where people accept one another, not on the basis of race, but on the strength of understanding, tolerance and mutual respect. The performance will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a 15 to 20 minute postshow discussion. To register for the celebration, go to http://ssw.umich.
Holiday concert set Dec. 3 Measure for Measure, a men’s choral society, will be joined by The University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club to present a holiday concert Dec. 3 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Measure for Measure, conducted by Steven Lorenz, was formed in 1988 by a small group of University of Michigan Glee Club alumni who were looking for a place to sing quality music after college. The organization is now in its 22th year.
The University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club, under the direction of Julie Skadsem, is a choral ensemble representing undergraduate and graduate women from and is composed primarily of nonmusic majors. This will be the second time these two groups have shared the stage. The groups will each sing their own seasonal repertoire and will then combine to sing the “Verleih uns Frieden,” composed by Felix Mendelssohn, with text by
Martin Luther. The concert will be held at 8 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd. Tickets for the event are available at the door or by calling the Measure for Measure Business Office at 649-7664.
