HERITAGE PRESERVE

A cultural-heritage perspective is outlined in my design which would allow me to conceive the historical memory as an inextricable part of an overarching historical discourse, the discourse of cultural-heritage memory. In order to achieve this conception of my design, a historical memorial and work of art is combined under one roof. Thus my design would create a symbolic space for learning, conserving , preserving and remembering our rich cultural-heritage from historical period ,where the past and present are continuously recombined.

H E R I TAG E

Tangible heritage includes buildings and historic places, monuments, artifacts, etc., which are considered worthy of preservation for the future. These include objects significant to the archaeology, architecture, science or technology of a specific culture. Objects are important to the study of human history because they provide a concrete basis for ideas, and can validate them. Their preservation demonstrates recognition of the necessity of the past and of the things that tell its story. Preserved objects also validate memories; and the actuality of the object, as opposed to a reproduction, draws people in and gives them a literal way of touching the past.

Historical town planning of Tamil Nadu is taken as an influence for the design where the entire town is divided by fortified walls with CONCEPTUAL PLANNING CONCEPTUAL high rising gopuras amidst. OF SRI RANGAM PLANNING OF MADURAI

With the inbuilt mass gopuram becomes analogous to the entire built complex and With evolving scales and mass gopurams can become visual reference and physical link

Interior spaces are distinguished by various level differences inside the fortified wall thus maintaining various spaces in an enclosure

Multiples intermittent gopuras between inner and outer denotes the hierarchy of spaces. Gopuram punctures in the barriers distinguish the spaces. Four cardinal points are marked by a doorway (gopuras). The interior spaces remain a treasury till one enters inside and explores various spaces.

CONCEPTUAL ZONING OUTER CIRCULATION

SYMBOLISM OF TAMIL NADU

Pedestrian movement within the complex will bisect the planes at every point of interest in the complex where the sense of interest and excitement is created to plunder the complex further and further . Thus keeping the interest sustain throughout

C U LT U R E Culture (INTANGIBLE) is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. The culture of Tamil Nadu (i.e.)literature , dance , song ,drama , arts etc…are in the verge of extinction or practiced in meagre scale in few parts. Industrialisation Technological era Fast urbanisation Westernizing Change in life style

INNER CIRCULATION

These factors has left to the NEGLIGENCE of Tamil culture practiced from the sangam era. Artists doing the traditional arts forms are getting DECREASED DAY BY DAY and some art forms are out of the present scenario(EXTINCT). The TOURIST who are coming to Tamil Nadu to experience the myriad cultural forms are left untold or they will have to travel to various places to experience the culture of Tamil Nadu. Its high time to understand the DEGRADATION OF OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE and REJUVENATE the culture of traditional Tamil Nadu ENLIVENING CULTURAL HERITAGE

Gopuram becoming the point of entry from one realm to another ,thus accentuating the transition from in to out –heaven to earth and vice-versa . The central gopuram will serve as a focus for the pedestrian bridge

THEATRICAL ARENA

Basket weavers arena shaped like a basket with bamboo and coir .

This is deign by tucking in ground which is designed in all aspects to recall the street theatres . Earth serves as ground and wall. Tribal arts & gypsies arena designed like a open structure as they mostly prefer working in informal environment. Weavers arena is shaped arena like a rectangular blocks wined together

This block is designed amidst the sculptor school which tries the maximum to catch the winds flowing from south-west and north-east. This is the highest point in the sculptor complex appears like enshrined my sculptures around it.. The sculptor school as a whole looks like a sculptor os life scale to bring in the theme of sculptor school. And it is designed in oneness with nature to give a good working environment for the sculptors.

Artisan village is designed along with water element and by retaining the traditional village street concept of providing pedestrian lanes where exhibition of artisans are carried out for visitors . Thus artisans village recalls the village cluster of artist in olden days

ARTISAN VILLAGE

The seating area is atop of the whole structure viewing the stage and the water behind it .

SCULPTORS RESIDENCE

The concept of rathas is tried to achieve in all the aspects of design like the columns and in the ornamentation

The FERN leaf/solar panel is a semi-transparent and flexible solar cell that gives a gentle light and provides a friendly space. AYINTHINAI MUSEUM COMPLEX

It was essential to preserve certain areas on site to bring in the built structure in complementary to the nature i:e to retain the site in its original form. The site is naturally divided into two halves with the backwater running across the site so this can be effectively used for segregating spaces. The museum space and theatrical space are segregated on either side of the backwater so that the theatrical space can open to the public only in the evening whereas the museum space will be open throughout the day. Viewing decks are created above the backwater to create vistas around the site and off site heritage precinct. Since the backwater mouth to the sea is very adjacent to site extra planning measures are taken to avoid the run off water into the site hence embankments are created which also visualises the major rivers of Tamil Institutional Nadu.
