DIFFA Chicago 2013
DIFFA 2013 -Chicago Myself, along with 5 other designers from Aria and our sponsor Imola, created this dining space. One of the goals this year at DIFFA was to create a zero waste space. We decided to tap into the materials that were utilized in the transportation of tile. Typically these shipping materials are reused until end of life, but some do end up in landfills. Aesthetically, our goal was to design the space to be a juxtaposition between luxury and industry. We wanted to evoke a feeling of comfort and warmth through the lighting, textures, and use of materials. Ultimately, we wanted to push viewers & designers to rethink materials, and experience a “cradle to cradle” approach to design. The walls, bench and the ceiling were created from shipping pallets. The feathery-like portion of the ceiling was created from threading packing strips through a metal mesh that was attached to the ceiling pallet structure. The words stenciled on the walls of the space - Bella & Risorsa (Beautiful Resource) and Bella & Vida (Beautiful Life) - key into how our resources are beautiful, but ultimately limited. The phrases served to pull the viewer’s eye around the space.
Conceptualizing through sketches, PS, and found objects
Various companies loaned furniture and accessories to us. The table, from Architectural Artifacts, was an old Industrial metal table weighing 250 lbs that appeared to be from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. The Donnie high back chairs and the Tori chandelier were loaned to us by Bradley showroom. The Giac Chairs came from the Atelier Gary Lee showroom. West Elm generously loaned us the entire table scape and the fake fur pillows. Fabric was donated to us by Carnegie and Romo Group. Tiles were painted by John Gordon, our IMOLA rep. Many Aria Group staff members helped to construct the walls, ceiling and benches. The pillows, walls, ceiling structure, and pallet bench were donated to DIFFA and back to a pallet supplier. IMOLA donated the tile to Designs for Dignity. Leftover pallet materials at Aria Group were donated to Root Riot, a local urban garden organization. Ultimately, we achieved zero waste through loans and donations.

Seattle Residence Kitchen Consultant This project is still in progress. Client: couple with (1) middleschool child. Wishes: Couple shares mid-century modern taste, but can’t agree on color. They have a Kitchen Designer in Seattle, but wanted someone who knew them both personally to consult per taste, detailing, and needs due to familiarity with space. Client is my sister. Husband wanted light cabinets, and wife wanted dark. Compromise was a 2-tone modern look with modern accents. Cabinet Hardware -mounted horizontal for clean, modern lines Design: Advised on details per installations, measurements, materials, fixtures, & hardware. Husband prefers bright colors. Palette may expand to include pops of green that will carry eye to exterior views, as well as into adjoining spaces. Modern furniture & fixtures with minimal lines are being considered so that it won’t impede on views of Puget Sound.
Dining Table Fixture: Modern lines, materials & color
Barstool: Modern lines & finishes to compliment design. Full back style per client request

2.5 day project. Brainstormed with designer and owners through my conceptual sketches on how best to reinforce restaurant brand on these two blank walls. Both walls are meant to be interactive and evolve with the restaurant. They were handpainted and drawn in (1) 12-hour day.
Drink wall: Glasses are drawn in chalk so that staff has the ability to draw new glasses as the drink menu evolves. Staff can also edit drink names.

Rooster/Map Wall: This restuarant sources food locally. They visually want their patrons to know where their food comes from and how far it travels. The road and rooster are painted in acrylic. The road is anticipated to grow with the names and distances of the farms, which the restaurant staff can draw with chalk or paint in. Harvest Room Interior Designer: Neelu McGibbon

1925 was the year that construction began on the Helen Brach Primate House. It opened 2 years later in 1927. The Roaring Twenties, als known as the Jazz Age was a decade in which the world saw a growth of individualism. It ws the time of prohibition, flappers, gangsters, Art Deco, and speakeasies. The era in which this building was erected was my stepping off point and inspiration for th Licoln Park History Museum. Art Deco strongly influenced my ideas for the restuarant and bar, as well as, the main entrance. Doors becoame a central theme as they are an entrance and exit into history and our daily lives. I wanted visitors to feel the decade as part of their experience and feel like they were literally walking on history. I developed terraces on both levels to take advantage of the views and warmer seasons in Chicago.

This hospitality project serves to capture waste and repurpose it through commercial, educational, and workshop spaces. The workshops are areas for the community to build new products from waste with the assistance of designers. Both structures incorporate furniture and materials that have been repurposed. The space between the structures is a method of circulation and activation. Garden rooftop spaces have been incorporated to highlight the importance of gardening within an urban environment to serve the needs of building tenants.

Oil Makes Design Possible

Local systems are contained within a much larger system. This system is oil. Oil makes design possible. It feeds each of the phases of design, and is also found in many products that are used to create interiors.
East Entrance-Ashland
Given that most theorists believe that we have hit peak oil with only a finite number of years left with this fossil fuel, how do we design without oil? Even in our most idealistic attempts to design in harmony with our environment with programs like LEED and Green Globes, if we don’t account for the energy source that makes it all possible, then what are we left with? I have explored this issue by redesigning an existing petroleum dependent structure and site to meet with the expected shortages in our near future. As part of my thesis, I also developed a set of principles of post-pertroleum practice.
