MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR RANDAL HUBER
Welcome Brilliant Audience! As you prepare to indulge in this wonderful, yet rarely produced Tennessee Williams play, I would like to share an exciting giving opportunity courtesy of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Chemainus Theatre has qualified to participate in the 2016 Endowment Initiatives program and until December 1st, Canadian Heritage will match all dollars donated to the Chemainus Theatre’s Endowment Fund.
“Every dollar truly counts!”
Our Endowment Fund was established in 2005 with a goal of keeping the Chemainus Theatre Festival alive and vibrant for our children and grandchildren. Endowment funds are a long term investment that helps build future financial health and security. The capital is held in perpetuity and each year the income generated from the fund is available for distribution back to support the work of the Theatre. In 2015, the Theatre received just over $41,000 from the Endowment Fund; providing vital financial support for our annual programming. Something I’ve learned over our past 24 seasons of theatre is that the ebb and flow of box office sales can be just about as dramatic as what you see on stage. The Endowment provides a steady source of income to smooth the fluctuations and empowers us to plan ahead with confidence. Our campaign goal is to raise $20,000 in 2016 which will then be matched by the Department of Canadian Heritage. Visit our box office or website to make a donation to the Endowment Fund and join the host of supporters helping protect and preserve the future of Chemainus Theatre. Every dollar truly counts!

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARK DUMEZ
“It’s quite a place to be.”
In her book “100 Essays I Don’t Have Time to Write”, astute playwright and pontificate Sarah Ruhl looks at types of story forms and humbly suggests seven, including linear arc, circular, backward, repetitive and Ovidian (or transformative). As a playmaker and curator of programming, this examination of forms beyond the linear was curious and resonant. I am struck by this somewhat unknown Tennessee Williams piece, and how he suggests circle patterns, movements forward and, in many ways, the longing for transformation. In ways both comic and tragic, he generously builds textured layers of longing in this play – a quiet yet wild exploration of the human spirit’s endless reserves, breaking points, and resting places. He tests the capacity for hope through Bodey’s longing, explores the nature of compassion through the treatment of Miss Gluck, and examines hidden motives and trust through Dorothea and Helena’s relationship. This is not a linear hero’s journey. It is a testament to engaging women (directed, acted and designed by a team of incredible women), a curious and playful trip through the lives of hardworkers and climbers, and a thoughtful piece about very human things. This play brings up a lot of interesting questions but doesn’t resolve them all. They are left with us to ponder, to discuss, and may, in their way, stir our own longings for transformation and contentment. I hope you will enjoy this journey to this efficiency apartment in the West End of St. Louis. It’s quite a place to be.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Sarah Rodgers
I am a huge fan of Tennessee Williams. It is a gift for any artist to delve into the sensitive poetical world of Williams. A Lovely Sunday is a gem of a piece – almost like uncovering a lesser known dear love letter by Williams. It has all the pathos and humour of his earlier work but a gentler, softer touch of tragedy. It is a great joy to delve into this beautiful female world and go back to the simpler time of the 1930’s. We have adored every sweet moment of it and it is with great delight that we share the world of Tennessee Williams with you. Enjoy.
Sarah Rodgers Director Sarah is thrilled to be back at Chemainus. Sarah is a busy director based in Vancouver. Recently: West Side Story (TUTS); Pride and Prejudice (Arts Club Stanley); Dressing for a Wedding (Solo Collective); Off Leash (Fugue Theatre); Upcoming: And Bella Sang by Sally Stubbs at The Cultch’s Lab and The Audience (Arts Club Stanley). Sarah holds a BFA/MFA from The University of British Columbia.

Rarity begets richness – revealed at Chemainus Theatre Festival. As we scour scripts for our season, we are sometimes surprised to find a lesser-known play that is bursting with character and entertainment. A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur is one of those lucky discoveries. Written by well-known author, Tennessee Williams, the delicate and dynamic story is often overlooked in comparison to his famous works – The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – and is often underestimated.
It is through a jovial lens and clever characters that Williams illuminates more solemn mid-century struggles. From schoolteacher Dottie’s naïve and desperate dreams to matriarchal matchmaking roommate Bodey, domineering colleague Helena, and the ever-present but never prominent mourning Miss Gluck, Williams pinpoints the still-familiar feeling of coping with loneliness and despair.
Despite its worldly themes, the play often departs from realistic technique into a unique The short play premiered in June 1978, blend of poetic language, slapstick humour, a few years before Williams’ death, and and sincere and tender moments that are caused immediate buzz – though not in the sweet, different, and totally enjoyable. usual admiring fashion. Though A Lovely We feel fortunate to share this masterful Sunday for Creve Coeur explores Williams’ story, and that you have joined us for most frequent of themes – heartbreak – it another great Festival experience. does so with an unexpected tenor of kindness and levity. Upon its debut, the nostalgic softness, rich symbolism, and witty dialogue of the story caught both fans and critics off-guard. And yet, at its heart, this play once again delivers “the Gothic joke of the American dream gone wrong.”

Get off the fence and into your seats. Hilarity is about to ensue in Hilda’s Yard. In his gifted comedic style, Norm Foster composed a meaningful story of two not-so-empty nesters. It’s 1956, and Sam and Hilda have finally begun to enjoy a peaceful life. But their blissful nights in front of the television (and a little hanky-panky) are cut short when their unemployed son and their newly single daughter return for an uninvited (and lengthy) stay. Niceties begin to fall by the wayside as strong-wills and traditional values face-off against the traumatized and spoiled attitudes of youth. Soon, the
VA N C O U V E R
delightfully hilarious battle between generations of the family begin to show a deeper story of love, work ethic, mental health, and domestic struggle. Hilda’s Yard is a dynamic exploration of how unbreakable family ties really are. Find out what transpires when The Chemainus Theatre Festival presents this over-the-top, all-ages play. October 7 – November 5 Tickets are available now by calling the Box Office at 1-800-565-7738, or online at chemainustheatre.ca.
