Editor’s Note Sweet relief! Fall is here, and putting together this October issue has filled us with the hearty spirit of the season. Here in the lush, abundant Pacific Northwest, dozens of area farms transform into wonderlands of fun and adventure – it’s not just hayrides and pumpkin patches anymore, it’s apple slingshots, pumpkin cannons, obstacle courses and tons more! Our Pumpkin Patch Guide on p. 12 details our favorites. It’s also time to think about next school year (oh boy); our Annual Schools Open House Guide, with its colorful and easy to read chart format, and expert tips on first-time preschool prep should get you pointed in the right direction. And finally, this month’s issue is a bittersweet one for me, as it’s my last one with NW Kids. Being a part of our tight-knit team since March 2010, then taking the editorial helm six years later, has been an indelible experience in knowing, supporting and growing the local Portland business and family community. I have been so inspired by the entrepreneurial fabric of our city; my time at NW Kids has been instrumental in allowing me to dream big enough to start and run my own small business, and now it’s time to pass the buck. Melissa Kniazeva comes to us from Portland Family and brings with her all the knowledge and enthusiasm that you’ve come to expect from our little corner! Thank you, so much, for reading and being with us. It’s been incredible. See you around,
Karel

Ready, Set, Go:
by KELLEY GARDINER
5 Steps to Preschool Prep
Preschool is a big step for a lot of kids and their parents, and it can come with anxiety on all sides. With a little preparation, though, you can get through this! “The best skill to hone as a three-year-old,” says Howard Fonda of Montessori School of Beaverton, “is [to] simply [be] a kid – avoid screens, be active and spend time together as a family.” When it’s getting closer to the day you walk in that door to preschool and walk out without your sweet little one, here are some other ways to get ready.
Pretend play together.
Playing school will help your child get used to the idea and work out their worries in a safe place. Lora Worden, librarian at The International School, advises talking about “previous times a child was nervous [to] help show [them] that it’s okay to be nervous and that it’s safe, and even exciting, to try new things.”
Visit the school.
Knowing what to expect helps ward off potential anxiety. Make sure your kiddo gets a tour (or two, or three) of the preschool facility before their first day. You may be able to tag along on tours for prospective families.
Read books about it.
Lisa Sickler from Small Friends School recommends finding a “going to school” book in a series your child already loves. Worden recently read Daniel Kirk’s Keisha Ann Can! to her students: “It’s a fun, positive rhyming text that can help kids think about their strengths and all the things they already know how to do or are learning to do at school.” 28 | NW Kids Magazine
Make a plan for goodbyes.
Kids are all different. Some might run off without saying goodbye, and other might be more hesitant to let go of caregivers (sometimes literally). Either way, talk to your child’s teacher and make a plan. Sickler looks at it as an opportunity for kids “to do something they are uncomfortable with and discover that they are capable of handling it.”
...And resist the urge to rescue. When it’s time to go, say your planned goodbye and leave without drawing it out. You might hear tears as you’re walking away, and that’s normal! Teachers are pros, and they’ve been through this before. Big feelings can happen no matter how much you prepare for preschool, but your child will know they’re safe and loved.
