CREATING A LEGACY OF SERVICE WHILE WEARING A CROWN By Molly Barari | Photography by Henry Roy Photography

iranda O’Bryan’s story is a page-turner. She went from growing up with teenage parents in a lowincome household in Martin, SD, to becoming the face of the evening news at Black Hills FOX to holding the esteemed title of Miss South Dakota—and that only scratches the surface. Crowned in June 2023, Miranda has dedicated the past six months of her life to the job of Miss South Dakota, which includes myriad community service opportunities and appearances across the state. “It’s been a whirlwind,” says Miranda, 26, with a laugh. She competed for Miss South Dakota five times over the past six years, and winning the crown was a true dream fulfilled. Her preparation now continues for the Miss America competition, which is held in Orlando January 14. “I’m blessed to have created a foundation of hard work as I prepared for Miss South Dakota. I’ve honed the message that I want to share and the authenticity I want to share,” says Miranda. “My sights are set on the goal of becoming Miss America. I want to be the first one from South Dakota!”
M
iranda’s Miss America preparation includes weekly interview coaching sessions, where she continues to practice sharing her story. It also includes workouts at the gym so she can feel her best—and her healthiest—going into the competition. Preparing for the national pageant also includes devoting time to her personal platform, which is a community service initiative that each Miss America system contestant holds dear. Miranda’s platform is called

“Service is the legacy of Miss America,” says Miranda. “I talk to groups across the state about the importance of literacy and about the importance of storytelling and seeing representation in stories. We didn’t have a lot of money when I was growing up, but I have fond memories of reading at the library or at my mom’s classroom—she was a teacher. Literacy is a foundation for education, for your career and for your entire life. It’s important for all generations to understand that importance.”

she needed to write the book. She graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts in History.
Miranda herself is an author. She wrote a children’s book, “Jericho the Journalism Kitty,” and self-published it this past summer after working on it for two years. It is available worldwide on Amazon.com.
She began working as a news anchor in June 2020, becoming the evening anchor for Black Hills FOX before winning Miss South Dakota. Miranda has put her career as a news anchor on hold to focus solely on her role as Miss South Dakota.
ith the help of family and friends, Miranda built and set up several Little Free Libraries across the state. She also started a podcast called “Page Turners,” where she speaks with literacy advocates and authors. The podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple or anywhere else you listen to podcasts.
The book follows the adventures of her real-life cat, Jericho, as he learns about journalism. Miranda has done several events as Miss South Dakota to promote the book, including readings at libraries and schools across the state. Miranda’s journalism background provided the knowledge

eing Miss South Dakota is a full-time job,” she says. “One of my favorite opportunities so far was going to the Oglala Nation Powwow and Rodeo as a special guest. It was extra special to me since my adopted dad’s side of the family is Oglala Lakota. My goal is to bring Miss South Dakota to all nine of our reservations this year and to be visible to young women there. I want them to know that they, too, could become Miss South Dakota.”
As Miranda looks toward the Miss America stage, she is excited to represent the state where she grew up. She is also eager to meet the other contestants—her “sister queens”—in person for the first time and to perform her vocal talent.
“I will essentially have 50 best friends from across the country,” she says. “Speaking and singing on the national stage will be terrifying in the best way possible. The song I picked is a pop song that I am doing a jazz rendition of, so I’ll transport people back to the ‘30s and ‘40s. I can’t wait to show people what I have in store!” Miranda says that competing at Miss America will give her the opportunity to say thank you to the people who have supported her over the years. “I don’t know if the shock and excitement of being Miss South Dakota will ever wear off,” she says. “I am incredibly grateful to be in this position and to represent the great people of South Dakota.”

FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS YOU’LL BE ABLE TO KEEP IN THE NEW YEAR By Julia Chang
You’ve counted down to midnight, lifted your glass and sung a chorus of Auld Lang Syne with all your favorite people. That’s your cue to start thinking about the resolutions you want to tackle in the new year. Nestled among the common top goals foe 2024 like getting in shape, traveling and finding a new job is a financial resolution: saving more. And it makes sense — being financially fit is just as important as hitting the gym, and it can help you reach so many other dreams you have for your life, today. The best way to help ensure success? Set some money-related resolutions you can actually keep. Here are five to get you started so that by this time next year, you can look back and be proud of all the goals you’ve accomplished — and the future ones you’ve already made progress on.
RESOLVE TO SET CLEAR GOALS
It’s great to want to do things like save more or get a new job, but to really improve your chances of successfully achieving your goal, break it down into steps. One popular way is the SMART method, which means you’re setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Using this method, a goal to save more could look something like, “I want to save $100 extra each month for the next six months to put toward my July trip to Europe.” Or a goal to find a new job becomes, “I want to apply to three jobs and attend two networking events by the end of March.” The more bite-size and specific you can be, the better.
RESOLVE TO ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE It’s human nature to remember the bad stuff more than the good stuff — in behavioral science, it’s known as the negativity bias. But research has shown a link between feeling gratitude and achieving your money goals. Essentially, feeling grateful fosters patience, which in turn helps you control habits like impulse shopping that can get in the way of reaching financial goals. So kick that negativity to the curb and think about all the good things that happened last year, and that will continue to happen in the new year.
One way to do that is to start a gratitude journal, where you write down a few things every day for which you feel grateful. That could be the winter family getaway that you’re planning now, or the warm cup of coffee that starts your day. Being reminded of the things you’re thankful for can help you stay focused on your bigger financial picture.

RESOLVE TO MAKE YOUR BUDGET REFLECT YOUR PRIORITIES
A budget isn’t just about tracking how much is going in and out of your checking account. Think of it as a means to accomplishing everything you want to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s the big birthday trip you want to take this year or the house you’re saving up for, , you should be taking those goals into consideration — as well as the things you want to enjoy today. Your budget should account for things like your essential and fixed costs; your savings goals (an emergency fund, a dream vacation, retirement, your kids’ college, etc.); debt repayment; and your day-to-day spending. A budget shouldn’t feel restrictive, so factor in what makes you happy. For instance, if a twice-a-day latté is part of your routine, make room for that in your everyday spending. If you’ve been dying to go on a Napa Valley wine tour or want to take a sabbatical before moving onto a new job, earmark those as savings goals.
RESOLVE TO GROW YOUR MONEY
Whether you’ve got a 401(k) that needs some extra love or an investment account you’re planning to use to fund a future goal, consider upping your contributions by just 1 percent. Chances are you’ll hardly miss the extra amount, and you’re using the power of compound interest to help your money grow even more. And if getting a new job is on your to-do list for the new year, then take a close look at the work benefits a potential employer would offer — a 401(k) employer match is one of the easiest ways to grow your retirement nest egg. Gunning for a promotion this year? Consider raising your retirement or investment contributions beyond that 1 percent — then set aside some of your newly padded paycheck for having fun, too.
RESOLVE TO TREAT YOURSELF
You heard right. New Year’s resolutions, including financial ones, shouldn’t make you feel like you’re depriving yourself. You can still make room for the things that make you happy (see Resolution No. 3), even if you’re tackling other goals like paying down debt. For instance, are you on track to make a final payment on a student loan this year? Bake in a treat to congratulate yourself, like a road trip to visit your best college buddies or that must-see concert for your favorite artist. Did you hustle to find a more satisfying and better-paying job this year? Maybe a spa day or a bed-and-breakfast weekend is in order. These mini-rewards remind you of the progress you’re making — and help you celebrate what you’ve accomplished so far. If you’re still unsure of how to set a budget with your priorities in mind, consider meeting with a financial advisor to help you work through the process. An advisor can help you put together a budget and financial plan that account for the goals you have — and may even help you discover new ones.
TAKE THE NEXT STEP Our advisors will help to answer your questions and share knowledge you never knew you needed to get you to your next goal, and the next.

THE YEAR OF
BY: MAGGIE JEAN WINCE RAPID CITY ARTS COUNCIL STAFF
Creativity
As the new year dawns, it’s the perfect time to set the tone for a year filled with inspiration and motivation. Whether you’re an artist, a writer, an entrepreneur, or simply someone looking to infuse more creativity into your life, here are 10 exciting ways to start your year off on a creative note.
01 CREATE A VISION BOARD:
02 START A CREATIVE
Begin the year by visually manifesting your goals and aspirations. Collect images, quotes, and symbols representing your dreams and arrange them on a vision board. Place it in a prominent place where you can see it daily, serving as a constant reminder of your creative journey.
JOURNAL: Dedicate a journal exclusively to your creative thoughts, ideas, and projects. Use it to jot down sketches, write poetry, or explore new concepts. Make a note of pleasing sensory experiences – that surprising texture, color combination, or fragrance. These practices help organize your thoughts and serve as a valuable resource for future inspiration.
03 TRY A NEW MEDIUM: Challenge yourself by experimenting with a creative medium outside your comfort zone. If you need some inspiration check out the Rapid City Arts Council for classes you can take. Trying a new hobby is more enjoyable surrounded by friends who want you to succeed. If you’re a writer, try painting. If you’re a reader, try your hand at pottery. Not a creative? Consider an introductory class where novices are welcome. Exploring new mediums can open up fresh perspectives and ignite innovative ideas. 04 SET REALISTIC GOALS: Establish achievable creative goals for the year. Break them down into smaller, manageable tasks, and create a timeline. 5 minutes a day? Once a week? First Friday of the month? Great! This structured approach to unleashing your creativity will help you stay focused and motivated, ensuring steady progress throughout the year.
05 EMBRACE MINDFULNESS PRACTICES: Cultivate mindfulness through practices such as meditation and yoga. These activities can enhance your connection with your inner thoughts, promoting clarity and creativity. Sol Yoga Collective offers a donationbased approach to their classes, it’s a place where all can come, feel accepted, and express themselves through a mind/body connection. A walk along Rapid Creek is just as clarifying.
06 JOIN A CREATIVE COMMUNITY: Connect with like-minded individuals by joining a creative community, either online or inperson. Engaging with others who share your interests provides a supportive environment for sharing ideas, collaborating on projects, and gaining valuable feedback.
07 TAKE CREATIVE RETREATS: Dedicate time to retreat from your daily routine and immerse yourself in a creative environment. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a longer escape, a change of scenery can fuel your imagination and recharge your creative energy. Hike through the free Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary in the Black Hills as you absorb nature and poetry along the way. Enjoy a dip at Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Springs/Spa and then visit Art House Hot Springs to immerse yourself in the arts community.
08 ATTEND WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES: Enroll in workshops or classes related to your creative interests. Learning new techniques and perspectives can inspire fresh ideas and improve your skills.
09 READ WIDELY: Expand your horizons by reading books, articles, or blogs outside your usual genres. Exposure to diverse perspectives can spark creativity and provide a rich source of inspiration for your own projects. The Rapid City Public Library is the perfect place to start your reading journey. After stocking up on great reads, stop by the free galleries at the Dahl Arts Center located across the street from the library!
10 CELEBRATE ALL WINS: Acknowledge and celebrate your creative achievements, no matter how small. Recognizing your progress boosts confidence and motivation, fostering a positive mindset that propels you forward in your creative endeavors. You tried something new and that was very brave. Good job!
Starting the year with a focus on creativity can set the stage for a fulfilling and imaginative journey. By incorporating these 10 creative activities into your routine, you’ll be better equipped to overcome challenges, embrace new ideas, and make the most of the creative opportunities that the year has to offer. A creative journey has no specific destination, enjoy the ride and have fun. BLACK

e’ve always believed that dining should be a social occasion, a time when friends, family, and coworkers can enjoy great conversation over a great meal. We believe in supporting our local artisans and staying connected to our Black Hills community. At a time when the area is growing and expanding, we’re striving to keep the flavor of the region alive. Inspired by the history of this area, both the aesthetics of the building and the diversity of the menu are true to our local roots, something no nationwide franchise can duplicate. Certainly, there are other steakhouses out there, but none like ours.

What Goes Best with Chocolate?
Chili, Of Course! By Molly Barari
Looking for a fun and savory experience the weekend before Valentine’s Day with your significant other or with your family? Look no further than Main Street in Hill City! Hill City will be bursting with flavor, warmth and excitement on Saturday, Feb. 10 with the annual Tour de Chocolate and Polar Bear Chili Cookoff events! 24
JANUARY
2024
“This combined event held in February is significant for Hill City for several reasons: It brings folks out at a wonderful time – near Valentine’s Day – to get out in the fresh air; brings visitors to town to experience Hill City; provides an economic boost to our awesome small businesses; breaks the cycle of any winter blues, and who doesn’t love chili and chocolate!” says Janet Wetovick-Bily, Executive Director of the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce. The Polar Bear Chili Cookoff is hosted by the Tin City Masonic Lodge and celebrates its 12th year this year. Competitors register their chilis in hopes of winning a prize, and participants get to come out and taste all the chilis their hearts desire. The event is held in the parking lot between Black Hills Bistro and HippieRockStar Boutique from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The best part about the cookoff? It’s a fundraiser for the Tin City Masonic Lodge’s many community projects and good works, including Delta Dental for kids; scholarships for Hill City graduating seniors; books for bikes with Hill City Public Library; the Child ID program; post-prom activities; meals for veterans and first responders; boys’ basketball and girls’ volleyball
programs; and other organizations in Hill City. More information about the Lodge can be found at www. tincitymasons.com. The chili cookoff registration fee is $30 for the first entry and $20 for the second entry, and all booths must be decorated. To taste the chilis, the cost is $5 per person or $20 per family.
recommend that folks also enjoy the Tour de Chocolate happening the same day in Hill City. There’s nothing better than chili and chocolate!” April Purdie, Manager of TurtleTown on Main Street—which sells truffles, fudge, caramels, ice cream and more—says that the Tour de Chocolate will be a chocolate lovers’ dream weekend. Last year, 29 businesses in Hill City participated.
“It is a great way for the Hill City businesses that are open all year to show and share their love for chocolate just before Valentine’s Day,” says Purdie. “Each business that participates features free chocolate. This is always a treat for our local customers to shop and play in Hill City!”
“We pay cash prizes and award medals for the top places in red, white, and green chili categories as well as for Best Decorated Booth and People’s Choice,” says Harold Ireland, Treasurer for Tin City Lodge #112 and Secretary/ Treasurer for Tin City Masonic Charities Nonprofit. “ This is always a fun event and a great way to break away from the regular routines of winter,” says Ireland. “Additionally, I’d

GOOD QUALITY you reach for the TOP SHELF.
he same is true at TopShelf Construction. That high-quality and personalized care is something owner and CEO Chandler Kubas is proud to offer. He’s no stranger to the construction world. “When I was 10, my dad and his brother started a construction company. I worked with them every day all the way through high school in the summers and after school. In 2013, I decided I wanted to start my own company.” At first, TopShelf dabbled in remodels and small garages. But it wasn’t long before they started to get noticed. “We were approached by some modular home manufacturers, and they asked us if we would be interested in putting in foundations and bringing all the water, sewer and electric to the houses on top of adding garages. We did two or three the first year, then seven the next and now we are doing about 15.” At first, Kubas says they focused their work in Montana and North Dakota, where he’s originally from. But soon the Black Hills caught his eye. “Spearfish Canyon, that just takes your breath away. That has to be one of my favorite places in the Black Hills. We knew we wanted to bring even more people to this beautiful area. But there was a shortage of housing especially in the Spearfish area. So, we bought a couple lots and decided to build some custom homes on them. Then someone asked us if we would be interested in taking on a whole division in Sturgis and we said, ‘why not’!” Today, they’re seven subdivisions in. And as the company expanded, so did the number of states they were in. Now you’ll find TopShelf’s name throughout Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Arizona. “Houses are needed everywhere. But we are really seeing that huge need in the Black Hills, especially in the Spearfish area. There are not a lot of builders but there are a lot of people looking to live here like retirees or people that have second homes. It’s our job to make sure they are getting the best quality.”

And when Kubas thinks of best quality, he’s not just focused on the build. “We decided about six months ago that we were really going to go for it and make something for my family and TopShelf.” So, the company expanded once again. This time as their own realty, mortgage and insurance company. “We really handle our clients from start to finish and beyond,” says Kubas. “We offer discounted rates, interest rates, for clients. That also means we take them from inception to the final stages and then carry their insurance for them.” Kubas says, it was important to set TopShelf apart from other companies. “I really feel like there is a need for construction companies to walk with the homeowner through the process rather than having them be just another number. We even have a program where we can buy the client’s house from them, and they can lease it back from us so they can afford to buy a new house or build one with us. Nobody in the Black Hills offers anything like that.” Those personalized relationships are critical to him and his company. “First and foremost, we want to make sure that the customer is handled and treated like we would want to be treated. That’s so important to us. We even contact the homeowners every Tuesday morning, even if it is just a five-minute phone call, to answer any questions and give an update on what’s going on with their home. Those small details matter.”
Kubas says he wants the Black Hills community and homeowners to see TopShelf as a partner in their journey. “Working with people and building everything they’ve ever wanted for them is just so rewarding to be a part of. I have been doing this for about 25 years now. It’s in my blood. The Black Hills area has just been amazing, and we’ve made some really incredible strides in how we are helping the customer. We are in this community for the long haul.” Even with all the expansion, Kubas says he’s not done yet. “Our goal is to be in several states in the next 10 years. I really see us doing it. We have such an incredible team, a great crew and group of guys behind us. I’m a pretty ambitious guy and I have pretty big aspirations for my company.” Top Shelf Construction 3130 121st Ave, SW Dickinson, ND 58601, USA (701) 495-1400 www.topshelfconstructionusa.com BLACK
