Growing up in a family of six kids in a rural town shaped Amber Rasmussen’s ability to comfortably talk to anyone. That skill, her talent for math and her passion for helping others proved to be an ideal fit for a career in mortgage lending. Amber finds joy in guiding people through one of life’s biggest investments — buying a home. “I come from a small town of 62 people, Agar, South Dakota, between Onida and Gettysburg,” Amber said. “Coming from a small town makes me who I am today because of the close-knit community and friendliness of everyone. … My dad was in farming and trucking, and he had to talk to different people about wanting to buy product, so he had to engage in conversation. He was always on the phone talking to people.” “My dad and I are one and the same. I get my math genes from him. He taught me to negotiate, every negotiation is a math problem, so it seems to come naturally. I love to do that,” Amber chuckled. “I’ve always loved math. I literally have an old-school HP12 calculator on my phone.” The people skills and negotiating skills her dad taught her serve Amber well at CMG Home Loans in Rapid City, where Amber is a senior loan officer. She transitioned to the mortgage industry from jobs in retail she held while attending college in Rapid City. On one particularly memorable day, a man came into the store where Amber worked and wanted to buy a hoodie. Amber sold him an entire wardrobe. The man, Josh Campbell, is now the branch manager of CMG Home Loans. Impressed by Amber’s sales skills, a former coworker of Josh later sent a staff member to recruit Amber.
“He taught me different aspects of finances and really grew my passion in the mortgage industry,” Amber said.
them understand (the process). … I like the trust they put in me because of the knowledge that I have.”
Amber now is something of a homebuying coach, helping clients understand what it takes to buy a house and what their final monthly payments will be.
“It’s nice to have people who even have owned a home before comment on how I guided a buyer through the process,” she said.
“It’s such a big purchase, so I’m really guiding them and letting them know I’m here,” she said. “It is sometimes stressful and I try to make it easier by walking them through the steps of what it is going to take. It’s a financial investment.” “I’m really guiding them and letting them know I’m here. I’m not just one and done,” Amber said. “My passion is to help
One of the most satisfying parts of her job is hearing clients tell her that, because she’s explained everything thoroughly, they feel comfortable buying a house. Amber’s clients sometimes become and remain her cherished friends long after their home purchase is completed. The recent influx of new residents to the Black Hills made her job busier, Amber said, and she enjoys getting to know people who make western South Dakota their home. “I love meeting people. I love to know why they’re moving here, what brought them to the Hills,” Amber said. “Being able to share what I love about it — it’s an easy conversation for me to have with somebody. … I love what I do.” Hers is a competitive business, and Amber is consistently listed as a top-ranking loan officer in the mortgage originator trade publication, Scotsman Guide. “The trophies I have in my office reassure me I’m in my right field. I am passionate and love what I do,” she said. Amber’s small-town upbringing contributed to her competitive spirit and her love of being part of a team. “My mother was an educator which prompted our move to Gettysburg. I was very much into sports in high school,” she said. “Whether playing All-State volleyball or basketball, I loved the team dynamic so I kept working hard at them. We’d go to basketball or volleyball camps to get better,” she said. “Teams come

a lot of community involvement. I do a lot of different golf tournaments. I’m on the WAVI board. I do a lot of things with REALTORS in town — we painted trim on houses and did yard work and all that. I’m (getting involved) in the Black Hills Home Builders Association as well,” Amber said. “I love to stay busy.”
Sports also brought Amber and her husband, Timothy, together. The couple is celebrating their 22nd wedding anniversary this year. One day at work, Amber met Timothy, a teacher, who also coached baseball.

“I went to his game and we ended up visiting after that and got married a couple of years later,” Amber said. “He’s an only child, so bringing him into my family of six, he does really well with it. He fit right in.” A thriving marriage and career are two of her accomplishments that continually bring Amber the greatest pleasure. “I love to work — one job, two jobs, three jobs. I’ve always been busy with work or fun or being involved with something. I like to be active with different things,” Amber said. “If I don’t have something going on, I get bored.”

When Amber played team sports, she’d rub teammates’ sore shoulders and they often remarked how good Amber was at massage. That prompted Amber’s 24-year career as a massage therapist, from which she has mostly retired now. “I found a massage school I could go to in the evenings. I worked full-time and went to school to get a degree. That only took nine months, then I did massage. I worked full-time and did massage parttime,” Amber said. “I had a good clientele. They’d come to my house. It would be relaxing for them. It wasn’t a fancy salon. They could just be themselves. … I loved helping them understand why they were hurting and how they could do certain things to feel better.”

Amber has been a member of Beta Sigma Phi since about 2001. The non-academic international women’s sorority takes on projects such as fundraising to benefit community needs, buying kids wardrobes for school, participating in Love Inc.’s backpack program and donating Thanksgiving dinners to families in need. “We did several things like that. It makes you feel really good to be able to give back to somebody,” Amber said. “I want to give back to the community. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
5
Amber thrives on being busy, and reading helps her wind down. “I like to read to relax my mind. It doesn’t matter what I read. A lot of times I’ll do a sappy novel or a mystery. It relaxes my brain so I can sleep,” said Amber, who’s a fan of author Kendall Ryan’s romance novels. When Amber’s driving or on long trips, she likes audiobooks. “It passes the time and keeps me from talking on my phone the whole time,” Amber said.
5 THINGS ABOUT
2
Amber likes to travel and is excited about a trip in June 2024 when she and a friend will take a cruise to Amsterdam. “I travel with a couple of girlfriends who have grown kids. My husband doesn’t really fly so I do the traveling without him and he’s OK with that,” Amber said. “I have never been out of the country. (Amsterdam) will be my first trip out of the country, and the lady I’m going with used to be military and lived in Italy, so I let her pick (our destination). It looks stunning.” Some of Amber’s travels, including trips to Hawaii, were sponsored through the company she works for. A destination still on her bucket list is Alaska. “I like to visit new places, and traveling is one of the things I just love,” she said.

Amber was a longtime softball player, but a broken ankle helped shift her interest toward golfing. She and her husband have date nights every Friday and the couple likes golfing together. “I played softball out here for about 15 years,” Amber said. “At a certain age, you want to stop doing softball so I got into golf. I took a lesson and started golfing. … My home course is out at Rapid City Elks Golf Course. I also play at Red Rocks and Arrowhead.” Amber’s husband is not a competitive golfer, but Amber is. “We go out and have fun when we golf,” she said. The couple also has a pontoon boat at Pactola, and on summer weekends they like to squeeze in golfing and boating. To satisfy her competitive nature, Amber plays in golf tournaments and in some women’s leagues and says she now prefers golf to softball.

ghost towns of the Black Hills
Contrary to what its name suggests, a ghost town is not simply a town filled with ghosts-- although it’s certainly possible that spirits may roam there. The official definition of a ghost town, according to Brittanica.com, is a town that was once an active community but has since been abandoned by all—or nearly all—of its residents.
B Y: M O L LY B A R A R I
Bill was born and grew up in Deadwood through the third grade, and he graduated from Sturgis High School. He attended the Merchant Marine Academy in New York and is retired from the U.S. Navy. He always wanted to be a history teacher, but he ended up teaching chemistry and physics. His interest in history flourished as he dug deeper into the stories of the Black Hills.
a town that was once an active community but has since been abandoned by all – or nearly all – of its residents.
“Folks should remember, in 1875, this was total wilderness. Then basically overnight from 1875 to 1876, it was flooded with people because of the Gold Rush. Deadwood was originally made up of 20-some camps. Usually, the first thing that’s set up is a saloon. Usually, the next thing is a supply store. Then you get freighters coming in. It was an explosion of people,” Bill explains.
According to a recent study by a company called Geotab, there are 3,800 ghost towns across the country, with Texas having the most ghost towns (500!). South Dakota has plenty of its own, each with a unique story.
Many of those mining towns were eventually abandoned when resources were depleted, making them ghost towns. Natural disasters, extreme climates, war, the building of dams, pollution and nuclear disasters can also result in abandonment.
Bill Swanson, 70, teaches a class through Community Education of the Black Hills called Ghost Towns of the Black Hills. The class is in its 26th year this fall, making it one of the longestrunning and most popular classes through the Community Education program. The class is held in the fall and spring, offering guided field trips to actual ghost towns. “People have a fascination with ghost towns because the history of the Black Hills is so interesting,” Bill says. “Many people don’t realize, but they were mining in Alaska before the Black Hills Gold Rush. This was the last blank spot of land in the United States and where the country came together to fill that land.”
While some ghost towns contain intact humanbuilt structures or the foundation of buildings, most do not. “Most of what you’d think of as ghost towns are gone,” explains Bill. “They are just empty spots where something used to be. For many of these spots, you can’t drive right up to them. You have to park and hike over to them.” Bill cites Rochford, Galena and Spokane, SD as great ghost towns to explore. In fact, the U.S. Forest Service conducts moon walks at Spokane—located 23 miles southwest of Rapid City on the Mystic Ranger District—so people can experience the area firsthand.
Established in 1891, Spokane was once a booming mining community until the town’s last caretaker left the area during the 1970s. The moon walks are guided hikes that highlight the remains of the Spokane mine.
Galena—a mining town eight miles east of Deadwood—hosts an annual summer open house and walk. The Galena Historical Society opens historical buildings on private property to visitors. There is also a self-guided hike to other historical markers.
Rochford is another town with a mining history that lies in Pennington County. The town’s Moonshine Gulch saloon still stands and is a popular place in the Black Hills for bar food and brews.

So, are ghost towns
Bill shares this anecdote: “There used to be a fallen-down cabin just up from the Moonshine Gulch in Rochford. Legend has it that people would see a miner come out of that cabin and walk down Main Street until he disappeared. I heard that story while in Rochford sitting at Moonshine Gulch saloon, and it sure sent a chill down my spine!” With all the hustle and bustle these ghost towns once encompassed, Bill believes they could be haunted. “After seeing two ghosts while out on ships during my time in the Navy, I believe in ghosts. There’s got to be restless spirits in these ghost towns. So many murders, and so much activity in these areas.”
Cemeteries and clusters of graves also have stories to tell. On the Stagecoach trails, when people died, they were buried along the side of the road with small markers. At other old cemeteries in the Black Hills, you’ll find elaborate monuments with poems engraved on them. Bill says these cemeteries can be interesting places to visit to learn more about the people who resided in these early towns. “The key with ghost towns is that you have to get out of the car, close your eyes and listen back 150 years to what was happening back then. Sure, there are black-and-white photos, but things were really happening in color. I encourage people to see the history in color.”

From Emergence to The Resilience of Očhéthi Šakówiŋ By: Maggie Jean Wince, Rapid City Arts Council Staff
From the time of their emergence in the Black Hills, the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ, known as the “Seven Council Fires” or the Lakota, Nakota, and Dakota people, have adorned their lives with works of art. Their stories have been tales of victory, and the tools they used to convey these narratives were quills, beads and paint crafted from berries and plants. As long as the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ have inhabited this land, they have been artists, celebrating their culture through creative expression. Očhéthi Šakówiŋ culture and art are deeply intertwined. Art has been a means of storytelling and a vehicle for preserving and passing down cultural heritage. Each stroke of paint and every bead woven into intricate designs carries with it the history, values, and identity of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ people. In the past, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ communities have confronted various challenges, including but not limited to intentional land displacement, forced assimilation and cultural appropriation. Despite these obstacles, they have persisted in their efforts to revitalize their culture and languages. Activism and cultural resurgence have been instrumental in this journey, ensuring that the traditions of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ continue to thrive. Today, the rich art history of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ still flourishes. The Dahl Arts Center currently hosts an exhibition that pays homage to this vibrant cultural tradition while using new methods to tell the story of past and present. Curated by Keith BraveHeart, in
collaboration with the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center at St. Joseph’s Indian School, this exhibition explores the enduring legacy of Očhéthi Šakówiŋ art. This exhibition is co-curated by Jhon Goes In Center and Dwayne Wilcox and features a remarkable collection of 17 works created by 11 different artists. The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) commissioned two additional artists, Billy Janis and Leland Benoist,
Expression : Expre Art and Culture
to contribute to this showcase. The thorough selection process resulted in numerous additional pieces that enhance “Creation.Story” at the Dahl. The primary intention of “Creation.Story” exhibition is to share and promote the culture of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ practices and beliefs. BraveHeart calls himself a contemporary native artist. Through this exhibition, BraveHeart allows the artwork to shift, to allow “for chance to happen,” and for the artist to determine the direction of their work. By bringing contemporary interpretations of Očhéthi Šakówiŋ traditions to a broader audience, this exhibition ensures that the heritage of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ remains vibrant and relevant in contemporary times.
“There is No Lakota Word for Art.
I am only doing what I was born to do.” - Keith BraveHeart
Wakaŋ Takaŋ by Keith Braveheart addresses the transcendent collective of elements or energies, known as “relatives” to the Lakota nation – similar to the ideology of gods in other cultures.
Comprised of eight key figures, these characters portray an epic narrative of cosmological creation told through a setting with sequences of drama, humor, suspense and inspiration. Four young men (Antone Morrison, Meeko Bear Killer, Gavyn Spotted Tail and Inkpa Mani Ruiz), and four young women (Persephone Eastman, Carmilita Shouldis, Marissa Zimiga and Summer Dupree) depict the eight deities that present Wakaŋ Takaŋ: Iŋyaŋ (rock; the first), Wi (the sun), Maka (the earth), Wakiŋyaŋ (the thunders), Skaŋ (movement or the sky), Wohpe (falling star or white buffalo calf maiden), Haŋwi (the moon) and Tate (the wind).
“Creation.Story” at the Dahl Arts Center is not merely an exhibition; it is a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ people and their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage through art. From their emergence to today, their artistic traditions continue to thrive, transcending time and adversity. This showcase invites all to witness and celebrate the resilience of a culture that has used art to tell stories of triumph and ensure that their legacy endures for future generations. Monument Health’s Breast Surgery program traces its roots to Julie Raymond, M.D., who laid the groundwork for providing high-quality care to breast cancer patients in the region. DINING EXPERIENCE

e’ve always believed that dining should be a social occasion, a time when friends, family, and coworkers can enjoy great conversation over a great meal. We believe in supporting our local artisans and staying connected to our Black Hills community. At a time when the area is growing and expanding, we’re striving to keep the flavor of the region alive. Inspired by the history of this area, both the aesthetics of the building and the diversity of the menu are true to our local roots, something no nationwide franchise can duplicate. Certainly, there are other steakhouses out there, but none like ours.

ADVANCING ACCESS AND EQUITY: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE REHABILITATION ACT OF 1973 By: Kim Dodd Formerly the Workforce Diversity Network of the Black Hills, this educational non-profit rebranded this year with a new look and a new name, Workplace Disability Network of the Black Hills (WDN). The mission that was started in 2013 by several Human Resource Directors, Vocational Rehabilitation and Black Hills Special Services at the request of then South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is continuing to educate employers on hiring and retaining people with disabilities. Why the change? With the larger campaign of Diversity & Inclusion sweeping through organizations and training co n fe re n ce s , we found that WDN was not attracting our target audience by being the Workforce Diversity Network, our mission was to promote disability awareness and over the course of 20 years the definition of “diversity” had changed; therefore, Workplace Disability Network was born!
will bring their unique perspectives from their journeys, working with and employing people with disabilities. The WDN will also recognize outstanding businesses that have gone above and beyond to help people with disabilities reach their full potential. Additionally, we select the John Fenske Legacy Award recipient honoring an exemplary HR department. John Fenske was the WDN’s Board President who passed away suddenly from a heart attack at age 55 in 2018. Heart disease is just one of many invisible disabilities.
The Black Hills community can still expect WDN to create and foster the education and connection of businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals with disabilities. We believe that everyone has potential, and with the right support--all abilities can prosper in the workplace.
ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP NDEAM is a perfect time to launch a disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). Sometimes referred to as Employee Networks or Affinity Groups, ERGs offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests. For more information, see A Toolkit for Establishing and Maintaining Successful Employee Resource Groups. If your company already has a disability ERG, consider using NDEAM to remind employees about it through displays, information tables, or other communication channels.
ADVANCING If you are not able to attend but want to do more, the Department of Labor has some great ideas and resources to get started or continue your awareness and training. The workplace is an important part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). For additional inspiration, check out Beyond NDEAM: Year-Round Employer Strategies for Advancing Disability Inclusion at dol.gov for access to the full list and links to the materials and articles to advance your workplace for all abilities. We like to say at WDN, that what can make the workplace better for one person, makes it better for everyone.
ACCESS & EQUITY The ideas below are just a few ways employers and their employees can participate, during October and all year long: Review Policies
NDEAM is an opportune time to review your company's policies to ensure they convey a commitment to an inclusive workplace culture. For assistance in doing so, see Inclusion@ Work (in particular the first section, "Lead the Way: Inclusive Business Culture").
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Celebrating 50 years of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The WDN will be hosting its annual breakfast to highlight and honor businesses and people who walk the walk and continue working together to create a better workplace for everyone. This event is sponsored by South Dakota Vocational Rehabilitation, the South Dakota Board of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired, the Statewide Independent Living Council, and the Department of Human Services and is celebrated nationally across communities to bring awareness, education, and training to employers and organizations. Each year the WDN hosts the National Disability Employment Awareness Month Event in October. Our keynote speakers
CREATE A DISPLAY NDEAM is a great time to freshen up bulletin boards in break areas or other locations that employees frequent by posting positive messages about your company's commitment to a disability-inclusive workforce. Start by putting up this year's NDEAM poster, available in English and Spanish. Additional display materials include the "What Can YOU Do?" poster series.

TRAIN SUPERVISORS Supervisors are the individuals closest to an organization's workforce. As part of NDEAM, consider conducting training to ensure they understand their role in fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Such training may include a review of relevant policies, including the process for providing reasonable accommodations. One easy way to provide such training is to make use of available "turn-key" training modules and available materials, such as the Building an Inclusive Workforce tabletop desk guide. EDUCATE EMPLOYEES It is critical that companies committed to disability inclusion effectively and regularly reinforce that commitment to employees. NDEAM offers an opportunity to do this through disability training or informal educational events such as brown-bag lunch discussions. Several ready-to-use resources can assist in facilitating such activities, such as disability etiquette materials and the "I Can" public service announcement and accompanying workplace discussion guide. Another option is to contact local disability organizations to see if they offer workplace training programs. Publish articles
National
Celebrating 50 years of
NDEAM offers timely and fresh content for an employee newsletter or internal website. Articles could address a range of topics, such as general information about the company's commitment to an inclusive workplace, the process for requesting reasonable accommodations, or perhaps recognizing the contributions of employees with disabilities – either in general or on an individual level. Your company's top executive could also issue a message to all employees recognizing NDEAM.
FEATURE NDEAM IN SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES Likewise, NDEAM provides an interesting hook for social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. For the latter, organizations are encouraged to include the hashtag #NDEAM. Sample key messages are available to assist in incorporating NDEAM into social media activities. Issue an NDEAM press release Employers can also issue a press release to local media to announce their involvement in NDEAM. To assist, a "fill-in-the-blank" template is available that organizations can quickly customize and pitch to their local media. PARTICIPATE IN DISABILITY MENTORING DAY Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for youth with disabilities through hands-on programs, job shadowing and ongoing mentoring. The nationwide observance is the third Wednesday of each October, but companies may choose to host their own events on any day of the month (or year for that matter). The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) offers information to assist in implementing a Disability Mentoring Day event. We look forward to seeing what you can do this month and all year to keep paving the path for disability inclusion at the Rushmore Hotel at 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 19th, 2023 for a free breakfast and uplifting event. You can register on Event Bright by searching NDEAM on their page.

By: Tanya Manus Creative Surfaces is proving to be as long-lasting as the Cambria quartz it sells. The business has achieved two milestone anniversaries this year. Creative Surfaces opened its Sioux Falls location in 1988. Along with celebrating its 35th anniversary in business, Creative Surfaces is marking 25 years as a Cambria quartz dealer. “It’s an amazing product with amazing designs. What it brings to your home is purely stunning and beautiful. It just makes a real statement in your home,” expressed Denise Pins, Creative Surfaces’ sales and marketing coordinator. “We were one of their first certified installers to sign up with Cambria,” she continued. “Cambria quartz is the number one seller of countertops. It’s a very popular product. Cambria is probably one of the top-of-the-line quartz products in the market.”

Much of Cambria’s appeal is that it’s nearly indestructible. The quartz is an engineered, nonporous product, seven times more durable than granite. It’s stain-resistant, scratch-resistant and nearly maintenance-free, Denise explained. If a blemish does occur on Cambria quartz, Cambria will send someone to fix it. Creative Surfaces’ main focus is countertops. Cambria quartz currently offers a wide range of colors and 188 designs. More patterns and colors are released every few months, with the newest designs having debuted in late September, Denise said. “What we’re seeing in trends with quartz countertops and quartz, in general, is waterfall

end panels (on) both ends of the island. The quartz is extended down the end of the cabinet, which is super cool,” Denise remarked. “I don’t see that trend going away.”
Denise said Creative Surfaces focuses on high-quality products and customer service that helps people achieve the homes of their dreams.
Classic white and gray remain among the most enduring, popular choices. A hint of metallic gold veining in some of Cambria’s designs is a subtle, chic accent to the quartz.
“When we meet with customers, we keep the lines of communication open from the very start,” Denise said proudly. “We ask as many questions as we possibly can and we want the customer to ask lots of questions as well. Let’s get the questions, decisions and timeframe made on the front end so all of our expectations have been met.”
“When you have a design that has a distinctive river or vein that runs through it — because Cambria does an amazing job of matching up those veins from the top down the leg of the waterfall — it all looks like one piece but it’s not,” she disclosed. What’s on-trend now is using Cambria quartz in place of tile on full-height kitchen backsplashes. Quartz beautifully extends the counter up the wall and requires minimal care.
In addition to its Sioux Falls location, Creative Surfaces anticipates its showroom at The Elements in downtown Rapid City will be open by the end of 2023.
“When you have it behind your cooktop, Cambria is a nonporous product so when you spill something on it, it doesn’t take on any of that residue,” Denise affirmed. “You spill a glass of wine or your kids spill their juice, it doesn’t take on that moisture so it’s really easy to clean.” The combination of beauty, durability and ease of cleaning makes Cambria quartz an appealing alternative to tile in shower surrounds and on fireplaces, Denise pointed out.
